Als Joe und seine Mutter Lidia Bastianich - er ein erfolgreicher Restaurantbetreiber in New York, sie eine bekannte US-Fernsehköchin und Kochbuchautorin - 1997 in ihrer friulanischen Heimat die Azienda Agricola Bastianich gründeten, erfüllten sie sich ihren Lebenstraum. Von Anfang an war für die beiden klar, keine Kompromisse einzugehen und nur qualitativ hochstehende Weine herzustellen. Die Trauben werden von Hand gelesen, entstielt und schonend weiterverarbeitet. Heute gehört die Az ienda zu den besten und begehrtesten Weinproduzenten des Friauls.

    Bottled in July 2016 and released in September 2018, the 2015 Plus appears to be a bit more elegant compared to the more evolved 2013 that I tasted at the same time. It is not as sweet either. The bouquet offers pineapple, candied fruit and honey, but this vintage clearly has more room to grow and evolve. It's all primary fruit, but it is also more elegant as a result. Put this one away for a few years, and I bet it will become a very special Friulano.

    The depth of stone-fruit and exotic-fruit aromas on the nose almost knocks you back in your seat. Rich, ripe and succulent, but with spot-on balance. Then the very long, silky finish takes your breath away. Drink or hold.

    Here's another winning edition of this great wine. The 2015 Vespa Bianco has that familiar creamy texture and richness but a more evolved aromatic profile. What's special about this vintage is the dimension it now shows along with some very tonic fruit at the back. It is spicy and warm, with flashes of bright tangerine, and offers so much intensity and textural purity. This beautiful wine calls for a nice grilled ocean fish, such as orata or (more readily available in North America) a black sea bass.

    Vivid straw yellow. Slightly reticent nose at first, then gains depth and complexity with aeration offering aromas of yellow apple, pear and nectarine complicated by botanical herbs and minerals. Then similar flavors to the aromas nicely extended by saline freshness on the tactile back end which is enlivened by a hint of peppery ginger. A Vespa Bianco that is very promising but needs to be cellared; put this away for another three years at least.
