91/100 Punkte Falstaff Federspiel Coup 2016

    93/100 Vinous Feb 2017
Based on multiple pickings from late September through the third week of October, this reflects a diverse array of crunchy, nutty and peppery greens ranging from spinach through cress. An upwelling of roasted lentil and turnip informs the satiny palate, with apple and honeydew suggesting sweetness while supplying refreshing juiciness. The superbly sustained finish is strikingly transparent to stony, crystalline mineral impingements. An ore-like glow there marries beautifully to low-toned vegetable elements, while peppery nips of cress and crunch of leafy greens provide persistent invigoration. This classic of its genre joins a long line of Hirtzberger Rotes Tor Federspiel bottlings that deliver in their own distinctive way every bit as much intrigue and pleasure as a top-notch Smaragd, and that age terrifically, too. But this particular bottling belongs near the head of the aforementioned line, and for reasons other than simply being the most recent!

Helles Grüngelb. Einladende gelbe Apfelfrucht, etwas Mango, tabakige Nuancen. Mittlerer Körper, weiße Frucht, finessenreich strukturiert, salziger Nachhall, vielseitig einsetzbar.

Rich and powerful, with plenty of structure to the dried apple, pear and almond tart flavors. Cracked barley and pastry notes show midpalate. The finish is creamy and well-spiced, showing some buttery hints. Drink now through 2024.

The 2015 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Wösendorf Kirchweg offers an elegant and aromatic bouquet of ripe and overripe white fruits along with yeasty flavors. Round and smooth on the palate, with fine tannins, good grip and nice bitterness in the finish, this is a full-bodied and elegant Veltliner with a lingering salinity and a stimulating grip.

Picked near the end of October, this smells of ripe apricot and white peach that could come from a Riesling, but accompanied by snap pea and cress. These elements complement one another delightfully on a silken-textured palate that exhibits unexpected lift for a relatively late-picked Smaragd. The richly-sustained finish lends a hint of caramel to the luscious pit fruits, yet there is a striking sense of vibrancy as well as of transparency to stony, crystalline, and iodine-like mineral notes. Crunchy, nippy snap pea and cress rise to the task of invigoration, while a suggestion of shrimp-shell reduction serves to stimulate the salivary glands and encourage, indeed practically compel, the next sip. As Irmgard Hirtzberger points out, since the family's first wine from these vines was a 2010 (and the 2014 fruit was blended into that vintage's Rotes Tor Federspiel), assessments of ageworthiness must be considered tentative. But given our track record with

Picked in Spitz between November 5 and 28, the 2016 Ried Honivogl Grüner Veltliner Smaragd opens with clear, deep, intense and ripe fruit intertwined with very fine mineral aromas of crushed gneiss and iron. Full-bodied, intense and very elegant on the palate, this is a rich but also pure and salty-mineral Veltliner with remarkable finesse and elegance and a complex finish that displays a lot of tropical aromas like bananas and super ripe stone fruits. Although it drinks perfectly (though a bit sweet) today, it will benefit from further bottle aging. Tasted July 2017.

A super-complex and vibrant nose with a huge range of herbs, jasmine, exotic fruits, grapefruit and lemon. Stunning concentration, but also great vitality and herbal freshness at the very long finish. This will hold for several decades, but it's hard to resist it here and now.

Harvested between October 31 and November 15, Hirtzberger's 2016 Ried Hochrain Riesling Smaragd offers a clear, bright, fresh, well concentrated and spicy/stony nose with partly stewed white vineyard peach aromas. On the palate, this is a mouthful of intense and juicy Riesling with lots of grip and salt. This 2016 Hochrain is really rich and dense and will gain finesse and transparency over the years in the bottle.
