The 2016 Ried Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner Smaragd has a deep, clear and flinty flavored bouquet of ripe, concentrated and very well defined white and yellow-fleshed fruits. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich, round and charming but also refined, elegant and tightly woven Grüner Veltliner with power, good tannins and mineral grip. It is a generous and rather smooth Veltliner compared to the fresh and finessed Steinertal or the firmly structured Liebenberg. Its finish is long, intense and powerful and reveals tropical fruit aromas. Tasted in July 2017, one week after the bottling.

From the warm and loessy middle part of the cru, the 2017 Ried Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner Smaragd offers a very delicate, fine bouquet of ripe, precise fruit aromas intertwined with flinty aromas. Intense and lush on the palate, this is a generous, very elegant, stimulating, salty-piquant, almost racy Smaragd with power, finesse, tension and vitality. The finish is long and grippy and reveals a still youthful wine that has very good aging potential. Tasted in Unterloiben, Wachau, September 2018.

    James Suckling 94/100

94/100 Punkte James Suckling, October 2018
Super ripe yet delicate with some yeasty aromas that will integrate with time. This is rich and powerful, but has plenty of freshness, the finish sleek and super-mineral. Great aging potential. Drink or hold.

    Wine Spectator 94/100

    94/100 Punkte Wine Spectator, Mar 31. 2019
A rich, smoky Grüner, luscious and creamy up front, but with underlying acidity that pierces its way through, revealing persimmon, vanilla and cardamom notes. Features a really lovely texture, almost velvety, coating the palate, but still remains fresh. Complex and long. Best from 2020 through 2030.

Fabulous aromas of oolong tea and vanilla bean turn to pineapple, grapefruit and savory mineral detail on the palate in this exquisite Grüner Veltliner. Viscous, yet vibrant, this shows some spice on the finish. Brilliantly harmonious, yet should show even more with some age. Best from 2021 through 2031.

    James Suckling 94/100

94/100 Punkte James Suckling, October 2018
Although this has some exotic-fruit aromas, the nose is also cool and minty. As succulent as it is elegant, this striking grüner veltliner finishes with an impressive mineral crescendo. Drink or hold.

From the central, loess-dominated part of the famous cru, Alzinger's 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Loibenberg opens with a very delicate and elegant bouquet of ripe fruits intermixed with a very fine and crystalline flint stone note. Ripe, intense and juicy on the palate, this is a more charming, lush and accessible Veltliner compared to the Liebenberg, but the finish has the same vitality, mineral freshness and tension. The Loibenberg GV is just warmer and more charming in its remarkably elegant character. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.

From the upper and stonier third of the cru and picked a week later than the Federspiel, the 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Mühlpoint is deep and flinty on the clear and coolish, very elegant nose. Rich and intense on the fleshy but also crystalline and piquant palate, this is a full-bodied and elegant Smaragd with stimulatingly fine and salty acidity. Long, fresh, structured and very promising. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.

From the parcels below the Riesling, grown on weathered bedrock (iron-rich gneiss) and benefiting from descending air currents of the creek, the 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Steinertal offers a coolish, fascinating, precise and flinty bouquet of white fruits. Lush and intense on the palate, this is a very intense and mineral but also sensual Veltliner that pleases hedonists as well as intellectuals. The wine has vivacious acidity, remarkable finesse and a long and sustainable finish with a lot of salt and tension. One of the finest Veltliners that has been produced in Lower Austria in 2018.

90-92/100 Punkte Robert Parker Jun 2016
The 2015 Riesling Smaragd Loibner Steinertal offers a very coolish and refreshing bouquet of ripe white fruits. Round, dense and elegant on the palate this is a full-bodied, concentrated, grippy and firmly structured Riesling with a characterizing phenolic grip. Still shy, this wine needs a few years to tell its story.

    93-94/100 Punkte Vinous Feb 2017
Last tasted in June 2016 from tank (after it had spent some time in cask), this opens with a heady display of ripe white peach and muskmelon, but also suggestions of fresh lime that then return on the palate to convey an exhilarating sense of animation, tension and refreshment despite the wine#s textural richness and generous ripeness. Stony and ashen notes, along with piquant lime peel, lend intrigue and a slightly austere note to the strikingly gripping finish, while suggestions of salt-crusted toasted shrimp shell prompt uncontrollable salivation.

    92+/100 Punkte Robert Parker August 31, 2017
Alzinger's 2016 Ried Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd displays warm, ripe and intense Riesling fruit that is perfectly intermixed with coolish, smoky-mineral flavors. On the palate, this is a pure, fresh, mineral, beautifully linear and finessed Riesling that reflects the cooler part of the Loibenberg. The finish remains fresh, shows nice grip and salinity as well as the classic fruit concentration of a cooler vintage. A beautiful Loibenberg that is more generous and round compared to the corresponding Steinertal that is more built on freshness and grip! Tasted in July 2017, one week after the bottling.

    vinous 93/100

    93/100 Punkte Vinous, December 2018
In keeping with the chilly conditions attending 2016#s harvest and the concomitant potential for letting Loibenberg fruit hang without risk of alcoholic excess, this bottling exhibits an unusually cool and animating combination of fruit and herbs for a wine from that site. But Alzinger was quick to remind me that it originates in a high-elevation, unusually cool and wind-exposed sector of that enormous, heterogeneous vineyard, a spot appropriately known as #Rauereck# (#harsh corner#). Crunchy apple and juicy, strongly rind-inflected honeydew melon are laced with mint and fennel on a polished palate. Smoky, incisive nips of Szechuan peppercorn, sizzling lime zest, mineral salts and crystalline stony impingements grippingly, invigoratingly and mouthwateringly extend a finish further enlivened by a generous dose of fresh lime.

From steep, southeast-facing terraces with weathered gneiss soils, the 2017 Ried Höhereck Riesling Smaragd is concentrated, fresh and piquant on the nose, displaying ripe white fruit aromas but also some greenish fruits. Dense and piquant on the palate, this elegant, tightly woven Riesling has remarkable phenolic grip, freshness and a stimulating astringency on the salty finish. Stunningly fresh given this steep and warm terraced vineyard. Tasted in Unterloiben, Wachau, September 2018.

The 2017 Ried Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd is from the eastern part of the cru where the soil is very poor and the microclimate significantly cooler than in the central part of the famous cru. The nose of the 2017 is clear and crunchy but intense and concentrated with its ripe white, refreshing fruit aromas. Dense and concentrated on the palate, this is a full-bloodied, tightly woven and very elegant Loibenberg Riesling with great grip, mineral tension and piquant lemon fruit flavors. Highly stimulating on the intense, lovely, astringent finish with yellow fruit and floral flavors on the long, aromatic aftertaste. Tasted in Unterloiben, Wachau, September 2018.

With complex peach, passion-fruit and mangosteen character, plus delicate, spicy nuances, this very concentrated Wachau dry riesling has tons of underplayed power. Then, the super long, layered finish demands your full attention. A masterpiece. Drink or hold.
