The 2016 Grüner Veltliner Am Berg is a light, bright, fresh and crisp Veltliner with clear and intense white fruit, fine acidity and a delicate mineral backbone. It weighs in at just 11.5% alcohol, is bone dry and really stimulating. Drink young and crisp and with fish!

Ott's 2016 Grüner Veltliner Fass 4 displays a deep, clear and pretty intense white fruit aroma intertwined with a noble spicy-mineral, quite stony flavor. Medium to full-bodied, intensely fruity but also mineral and provided with crystalline acidity, this is a remarkably delicate and filigreed Grüner Veltliner. Ending with a clear, piquant and salty finish, it is a first-class wine to pair with many dishes, mainly veggies, fish and white meat. Tasted at Schloss Gobelsburg in July 2017.

    vinous 92/100

Lentil, snap pea, green herbs and fresh lime on the nose set the parameters for a silken-textured yet stimulatingly crunchy mid-palate performance that combines nutty, earthy richness with cooling herbal essences, fresh legumes, and brightly juicy, Riesling-like citrus. Suggestions of sweet red pepper, raw almond, piquant citrus pip and marine minerality add to an appeal that culminates with (again Riesling-like) crystalline stony impingements and a mouthwatering compulsion to take the next sip. At 12.2%, this weighs-in with considerably higher alcohol than that of the corresponding #Am Berg,# but still little enough that it conveys a delightful sense of lift to accompany its irresistibility.

Leuchtendes Gelbgold.

The intensely yellow-colored 2016 Feuersbrunner Rosenberg 1ÖTW opens with a deep, intense and complex bouquet of crushed stones, perfectly ripe fruits and a lovely phenolic freshness coming from the skins. Gorgeous! The attack on the palate is piquant, the fruit super ripe and intense, leaving a densely woven carpet with some mineral needles and fine tannins on the palate. Coming from 60+-year-old vines, this is a great, full-bodied and vivacious Grüner Veltliner from the Wagram that reveals a long and vital, stimulatingly salty finish. Tasted as a sample at Schloss Gobelsburg in July 2017.

Flinty and rather closed. Not only extremely concentrated, but also very refined for grüner veltliner with an almost endless finish. Needs a couple of years before it will give its best, but this is a masterpiece of elegance from Bernhard Ott. Screw cap.

The 2016 Feuersbrunner Spiegel 1ÖTW is a Grüner Veltliner that opens with a clear and intense, very attractive tropical fruit aroma of mango and passion fruit with some spicy stony aromas. Fresh, round and piquant on the palate, this is a well structured and juicy Veltliner with a stimulatingly pure, salty and refreshing finish. The aftertaste is long and very aromatic again and reveals the full body again without being overloaded. It is a delicious Spiegel with a long and tensioned, clear, almost dry, well structured finish. I tasted this enormously stimulating 2016 as a sample at Schloss Gobelsburg in July 2017.

From gneiss soils covered with white and red sand and finally loess, the 2015 Engabrunner Stein 1ÖTW Grüner Veltliner is a very clear, deep and flinty flavored wine with superripe white-fruit aromas on the nose. Rich and elegant on the palate. this is a generously fruity but precise and tension-filled Veltliner with a lush texture and a precisely mineral piquancy in the pure and salty finish. An impressive Veltliner full of grip and aging potential. Due to hail damage yields were very, very low in 2015 and only 4'000 liters of the 2015 Stein have been bottled from 5.25 hectares of vines. It was the deadline day of this issue (June 3) when I got the chance to taste the 2015s of Mister Veltliner Bernhard Ott, one of the leading wine estates in the Wagram region, if not the whole Danube valley. These wines, especially the grands crus or Erste Lage wines from Grüner Veltliner (indicated on the label as 1ÖTW), are the greatest wines Ott has bott

Coming from gneiss soils covered with white and red sand and finally loess, the 2016 Engabrunner Stein 1ÖTW is Ott's one and only Kamptal Grüner Veltliner. Intensely citrus-colored, the wine opens with a clear and flinty bouquet of perfectly ripe white fruits and exciting citrus aromas. Round, finessed and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, complex and mineral Veltliner with intense and lingering fruit aromas that are almost tropical. Although the 2016 is a bit too sweet for my taste, and also lunch or dinner, it is well structured due to the fine acidity and perfectly integrated minerality. Mind, though, that as soon as the CO2 has disappeared, the wine will taste sweeter than in the beginning. Tasted as a sample at Schloss Gobelsburg in July 2017.
