www.weingut-loewen.de

    Falstaff 91/100

91/100 Punkte Falstaff Deutschland Weinguide 2020

    James Suckling 94/100

94/100 Punkte Robert Parker, December 2019
A very spicy delivery of riesling notes with cinnamon, cardamon, orange blossom and dried jasmine. Quite decadent and mouth-filling with a serious amount of concentration and length. The acidity colors in the coarse edges. An entirely unique wine with real personality. Drink now or hold.

    Parker 91/100

91/100 Punkte Robert Parker June 2019
The 2018 Ritsch Riesling Auslese displays a yellow-golden citrus color and a ripe, intense and aromatic bouquet of lush stone fruits and delicate slate aromas. Lush and sweet on the palate, this is a charming, piquant and salty Riesling with remarkable finesse but quite a bit of residual sugar (around 90 grams per liter). The finish is precise, very clear and stimulatingly crystalline and salty. Tasted from tank one day before bottling in April 2019.

    James Suckling 96/100

96/100 Punkte James Suckling, December 2019
Super fine and fresh for an Auslese with dainty flavors of rose apples and rose water, colored by bright dried lemons and limes. The medium sweetness, though perceptible and deep, is hardly a factor in this wine, as it#s threaded surreptitiously through racy acidity and a bright, lemon-pith texture. Drink now or hold.

90/100 Punkte Robert Parker June 2019
From higher and cooler plots on red slate, the 2018 Longuicher Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett offers a very clear, elegant and intensely aromatic nose of ripe white stone fruits and crushed stones. From vines up to 100+ years old, this is a lush, piquant and salty Riesling with good grip and unashamed juicy, aromatic fruit. This 2018 tickles the tongue and reveals remarkable finesse. Bottled in March this year with 9.5% alcohol and less than 50 grams of residual sugar. Tasted in April 2019.

    James Suckling 94/100

94/100 Punkte James Suckling, December 2019
Beautiful herbal complexity here, ranging from green peppers to green paprika, nutmeg, cloves and tea leaves. Otherwise, all the flavors are citrusy and bright. Fine, lemon-lime character drives long, aided by steely acidity. Touch of off-dryness on the finish. Drink now or hold.

    92/100 Punkte Vinous April 2020
Like its 2014#2016 predecessors, this interpretation of the Maximin Herrenberg issues from a grayer slate parcel planted in 1902 that#s even steeper and stonier than the 1896 planting on redder slate to which the Loewens devote two bottlings. It happily defies my expectation that, as a Grosses Gewächs, it would be weightier, more austere and less juicy than those two siblings. Aromas of lemon zest and black tea and a site-typical hint of lingonberry lead into a pithy, piquant, smoky palate performance that persists with formidably firm grip. But crunch and juiciness of red berry, along with lemon and pit-inflected white peach, serve for obligatory refreshment, and there is a fine sense of clarity. (For more on this site and these vines, consult my reviews of the corresponding 2014 and 2015.)

Pump up the volume! Rich and deep with a kaleidoscope of aromas ranging from exotic fruit to berries and herbs. A very dry, dangerously refreshing finish. Drink or hold.

    vinous 91/100

    91/100 Punkte Vinous April 2020
A penetratingly pungent and amazingly Muscat-like nose combines sage and oregano with orange blossom, apricot and tangerine. (There is still a faint chive-like post-fermentative, post-sulfuring note, but it isn#t disturbing.) The satiny, lusciously fruited midpalate gains invigorating and complementary counterpoint from zesty impingements of orange peel and hickory nut. Fifty grams of residual sugar are wholly supportive. The finish delivers lots of refreshment as well as a load of crushed stone.

A breathtaking Spätlese! Succulent and vibrant with a bright acidity, carrying the long and super clean finish. Better from 2020, but it shows enormous aging potential.
