93/100 Punkte Robert Parker, March 2020 From the central, loess-dominated part of the famous cru, Alzinger's 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Loibenberg opens with a very delicate and elegant bouquet of ripe fruits intermixed with a very fine and crystalline flint stone note. Ripe, intense and juicy on the palate, this is a more charming, lush and accessible Veltliner compared to the Liebenberg, but the finish has the same vitality, mineral freshness and tension. The Loibenberg GV is just warmer and more charming in its remarkably elegant character. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker, March 2020 From the upper and stonier third of the cru and picked a week later than the Federspiel, the 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Mühlpoint is deep and flinty on the clear and coolish, very elegant nose. Rich and intense on the fleshy but also crystalline and piquant palate, this is a full-bodied and elegant Smaragd with stimulatingly fine and salty acidity. Long, fresh, structured and very promising. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.
94/100 Punkte Robert Parker, March 2020 From the parcels below the Riesling, grown on weathered bedrock (iron-rich gneiss) and benefiting from descending air currents of the creek, the 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Steinertal offers a coolish, fascinating, precise and flinty bouquet of white fruits. Lush and intense on the palate, this is a very intense and mineral but also sensual Veltliner that pleases hedonists as well as intellectuals. The wine has vivacious acidity, remarkable finesse and a long and sustainable finish with a lot of salt and tension. One of the finest Veltliners that has been produced in Lower Austria in 2018.
94/100 Punkte Robert Parker December 2018 Picked on September 28, Ott's 2017 Grüner Veltliner Ried Feuersbrunner Spiegel 1ÖTW is very clear, subtle and elegant on the distinctive nose. In early September 2018, the nose displayed white stone fruits intertwined with refreshing, refining gravelly and floral notes. Later that month, the wine showed tropical notes on the intensely fruity, elegant, sexy nose. Full-bodied, rich and dense on the palate, with intense, lush, concentrated fruit and vitalizing, fine acidity, this is a very persistent and powerful Veltliner with a very long, forward, mineral and tensioned finish. This is a powerful but elegant giant and needs time to gain finesse and transparency. The elegance here, however, is remarkable. Tasted twice in early and late September 2018.
95/100 Punkte James Suckling, October 2018 Tons of white pepper, but also lemon zest and licorice. Great freshness for the vintage. Dense but only medium-full palate and a very long, mineral finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Respekt certified. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
93/100 Punkte James Suckling December 2019 Aromas of sliced green apples and pears with white pepper and light, fresh herbs. The palate is sleek and juicy with a smooth build of lime and apple flavors. Pure, minerally finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker December 2018 The 2014 Gumpoldskirchen Chardonnay Gumpold opens with an intense butterscotch flavor on the nose as well as a first maturity. On the palate, this is a creamy, elegant, well structured and slightly bitter Gumpoldskirchen Chardonnay with a good, clear and fresh finish. Tasted June 2018.
93/100 Punkte Robert Parker June 2019 The white has the same name as the entry-level red, and I tasted the 2017 Horizonte de Exopto Blanco. For the white, they have added the grapes from one more plot in the village of Ábalos that's planted exclusively with white grapes (the rest are planted with a majority of red and only individual white vines), and production has grown to 6,000 bottles. Produced in a slightly oxidative way, it's mostly Viura and 10% each Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, fermented together in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and finished in barriques. The élevage was in used 225-liter barrels (60% of the volume), concrete eggs (25% and used for the first time) and French oak demi-muids (the remaining 15%) and lasted 12 months. The new thing is the addition of the concrete egg, which seems to have added freshness, tension and aromatic complexity. In fact, the wine makes me think of a cool vintage (and it was not), and the wine is fresh and has great ac
91/100 Punkte Robert Parker, August 2018 The 2016 La Misión shows much fresher, more vibrant and alive, with much better harmony. It has depth and some chalky austerity on the palate, with varietal notes and a dry finish.
91+/100 Punkte Robert Parker Dec 2019 Their top Godello white from Bierzo is the 2017 La Revelía, produced with fruit from a warm, ripe and dry year. It fermented in 500-liter French oak barrels, where the wine matured for eight months. Despite the ripe year, the wine has kept its poise and balance, the oak feels very integrated. It has good freshness and a lively palate with focused flavors and a long finish.
92/100 Punkte Wine Spectator, July 2019 This rich white is generous yet focused. Pear, quince, heather and vanilla flavors are backed by citrusy acidity, with accents of mineral, tangerine and smoke. Harmonious. Drink now through 2024.
93/100 Robert Parker May 2020 The top-of-the-range white 2014 Lapena is pure Godello from a 37-year-old vineyard on schist and slate soils of sandy texture at 670 meters in altitude, and it feels a little austere and close despite the faint creaminess. It has notes of tangerine peel, yellow flowers and pollen, spices and smoke. The influence of the oak (it fermented and matured in 600-liter barrels) gives it a slightly Burgundian twist that is quite intermixed with the Atlantic/Gallego character, coming through as quite original, keeping the imprint of the origin that is more clear in the younger Lapola. Only 887 bottles were filled in June 2016.
93/100 Punkte Robert Parker May 2020 The 2017 Lapola, the entry-level white blend, is mostly Godello complemented by 15% Dona Blanca and 5% Albariño and comes from a year marked by frost and storms followed by warm weather that accelerated everything. It has an expressive and characterful nose with a mixture of herbs, flowers, pollen and some spices. The palate reveals very tasty flavors and a long, spicy finish that's almost salty. This is delicious, very sexy now, but with aging potential. It matured in oak vats and barrels followed by time in concrete eggs. 13,313 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2019.
89+/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Feb 2020 The 2018 Malans Chardonnay shows an intense golden-yellow color and opens with a correspondingly intense but pure and elegant bouquet that indicates super ripe fruit. On the palate, this is a fresh and pure but powerful and full-bodied wine with fine tannins and toasty flavors from the barriques. This 2018 is remarkably fresh and elegant, given that warm vintage. The finish is stimulatingly pure and fresh and also salty. An excellent effort. 13.5% alcohol. Tasted in Zurich in December 2019.
91/100 Punkte Robert Parker August 2019 There is a nice freshness to the 2015 Malvasia, with loads of ripe fruit and peach and honey, delivered with great balance and intensity. The mouthful is a little lean, but it also shows a peachy softness. This wine doesn't offer sweetness so much as a fully loaded fragrance. The wine sees 12 months in barrique. Accompany it with grilled prawns marinated in Worcestershire, black pepper, honey, orange juice and a half cup of this wine.
91/100 Punkte Vinous May 2018 Vivid straw-green. Clean and fresh mineral notes complement fresh apple, white peach and sage aromas and flavors. The perfumed back end showcases a slightly herbal edge and zingy acidity. Only 12% alcohol makes for a very refreshing wine that is light on its feet while packing in just enough flavor to keep it interesting. A nicely done balancing act, this wine boasts sneaky concentration and subtle length.
90/100 Punkte Robert Parker Oct 2019 This hot-vintage wine is pleasantly luminous and bright with simple fruit, citrus and mineral tones that keep the palate refreshed. The wine is made almost exclusively in stainless steel to keep it simple.
92+/100 Punkte Robert Parker August 2017 From chalky marl soils and the warmest vineyard of the family (just 5 kilometers west of the domaine), the 2015 Sulz Morillon was fermented in 1,000-liter and 228-liter barrels. It offers a clear, fresh and aromatic bouquet with coolish earthy and lemon peel flavors and a hint of smoke. Very elegant and fresh on the palate, with piquant acidity and a crispy phenol structure, this is a full-bodied and persistent Chardonnay of remarkable elegance and powerful juiciness. The tannins are fine but grippy, and the aftertaste is chalky, aromatic and very long. I tasted this wine in May 2017 from a bottle that was filled the same day (LO 80517), whereas two-thirds of the production still remains in stainless steel.
94/100 Punkte Robert Parker Apr 2016 From 30-year-old vines, fermented for one year in small barrels and aged for another six months in stainless steel (without the addition of sulfur), the 2013 Morillon Zieregg was bottled unfiltered in July 2015; it opens pure and mineral on the nose, and reflects its great shell limestone terroir in 450 meters altitude, with floral and lemon aromas. Compared to the corresponding Zieregg Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), this Morillon (Chardonnay) seems leaner and straighter, but is very intense and compact, well structured and powerful. The finish is long and grippy, a bit austere, but full of tension and potential. There is a great finesse and salivating salinity in this wine that is surely on the quality level of the Zieregg Sauvignons. Keep this "Grosse STK Lage" cru for another five to 15 years and don't miss to try it.
93-94/100 Punkte Robert Parker August 2017 The golden-yewllow colored 2015 Zieregg Morillon comes from Muschelkalk soils with a thicker layer of brown soil. The wine opens with a clear, intense and aromatic bouquet of perfectly ripe, yellow-fleshed fruits intermixed with crushed rocks and lemon juice. Round and very elegant on the palate, this is a rich, full-bodied and juicy Zieregg with a mouthful of fruit, fine acidity, firm tannins and a lingering finish. It is still a bit hard and tannic in the finish, but this will soften over the time. The wine is succulent, powerful and big and needs this structure. It has more flesh on the bones compared to the more mineral and pure Weissburgunder form the very stony part of the Zieregg. Tasted at the domaine in May 2017.
94+/100 Punkte Robert Parker October 31, 2018 The 2016 Ried Zieregg Morillon is from the oldest, southwest-facing part of the cru and was planted by Manfred Tement in the early 1980s on coral limestone. Today the vineyard is so well balanced that the yields are almost never reduced and the grapes are picked in just a single day. In 2016, the loss due to frost was "just" 50% (compared to 85% in Sulz), and the grapes came only from the very first shoots, which resulted in a long vegetation period. The 2016 includes one barrel of Pinot Blanc (10%) and opens pure, fine and fresh on the nose, with beautiful chalky notes and perfectly ripe fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a pure, vital and tensioned wine with great elegance, grip and lots of (almost peppery) spices and fine tannins. The 2016 has remarkable finesse and a persistent, citrus-fresh finish that reveals endless energy, purity and salinity. This is like a top Côte des Blancs Champagne without bubbles. There are lemon and c
91/100 Punkte Robert Parker December 2018 Macerated overnight with stems and skins and vinified in large oak, the unfiltered 2016 Neubürger Freyheit has a cloudy citrus color and opens with an intensely aromatic bouquet of citrus fruits, oak and yeasty notes. On the palate, this is a lean but textured, beautifully fresh and citrusy Neuburger with a tight, fresh, salty, well-structured finish. This is a terribly crisp and vital but also complex Neuburger with 12% alcohol and no added sulfur. Bottled unfiltered. Tasted October 2018.
90/100 Punkte Robert Parker Dec 2019 The organic 2018 Nosso wears the subtitle "Verdejo Ecologico Natural" and had no added sulfites. It has some cereal-like aromas, with a lactic hint, not very varietal, but clean and not showing any deviations. The palate is balanced, with good freshness and a marked bitter finish#to me, that's the signature of Verdejo.
90/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Feb 2020 In 1977, Sandrine's grandfather was one of the first vignerons to plant Païen (a.k.a. Heida or Savagnin) in the French-speaking part of the Valais. Sandrine still cultivates the old plot that is planted with green and yellow Savagnin. Her organically farmed 2018 Païen Les Bernunes opens with a deep, intense and concentrated bouquet with a deep layer of crushed stones and delicately aromatic ripe fruit aromas. Full-bodied, lush and round, with fine tannins rather than vibrant acidity like the Petite Arvine, this is rich and almost oily-textured Savagnin with a long and tannic finish that is still tight, with tannins that seem to be slightly greenish. This Païen has some features of red wine, like what you find in serious Gewürztraminers, and I'd recommend waiting another year or two before serving the 2018. Tasted in January 2020.
