93/100 Punkte Wine Spectator March 31, 2017 A graceful red that carries its medium to full body well, offering fine-grained tannins layered with a subtle streak of smoky mineral and pleasing flavors of ripe black raspberry and sweet brown bread. Hints of dried lavender, orange zest and spice box linger on the chewy finish. Drink now through 2028.
91/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Oct 2018 This wine sees fruit sourced from the warm and sunny Maremma area on coastal Tuscany. The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon shows an inky dark appearance with dark garnet color saturation. It offers a fine and chiseled aromatic profile with dark berry fruit followed by spice, anise seeds and an unmistakable balsamic note that reminds me of eucalyptus oil. This is a mid-weight expression of the grape that is both accessible and easy to drink straight out of the gate. It ages in neutral oak for 12 months. Some 20,000 bottles were made.
92/100 Punkte Vinous Feb 2019 The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, from Brancaia's vineyards in Maremma, expresses a good bit of varietal character and overall nuance. Fleshy, dark and seductive, the 2016 will drink well with minimal cellaring. Today, it is very pretty and delicious.
92/100 Punkte James Suckling, September 2018 Shows beautiful, blue fruit, as well as lavender, crushed stones and violets. Medium to full body, lithe and endearing tannins and a fine, tangy finish. Drink now.
93/100 Punkte James Suckling November 2019 Good focus and intensity to the nose here, folding in licorice, dried herbs, black pepper and Chinese spices. Full body, plenty of density and richness, but a fine line of acidity and freshness. Structured and quite long on the finish. Drink now.
93/100 Punkte Wine Spectator, Feb. 2019 Smooth, with black cherry, plum, leather and tobacco flavors intertwining, this red is complex and powerful. The beefy structure reveals itself as this plays out on the long finish. Best from 2022 through 2035.
93/100 Punkte Robert Parker, March 2020 From the central, loess-dominated part of the famous cru, Alzinger's 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Loibenberg opens with a very delicate and elegant bouquet of ripe fruits intermixed with a very fine and crystalline flint stone note. Ripe, intense and juicy on the palate, this is a more charming, lush and accessible Veltliner compared to the Liebenberg, but the finish has the same vitality, mineral freshness and tension. The Loibenberg GV is just warmer and more charming in its remarkably elegant character. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.
95/100 Punkte Robert Parker Oct 31, 2018 The 2015 Ilatraia is a drop-dead gorgeous blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Cabernet Franc with all fruit coming from Brancaia's Maremma vineyards along the Tuscan coast. This warm vintage has shaped an exuberant and intense red wine that hits the palate with lavish richness. The complex bouquet is composed of dark fruit elements that are contrasted seamlessly against spice, sweet tobacco and campfire ash. Yet the mouthfeel is never too heavy or overextracted. There's a lot to enjoy here.
96/100 Punkte James Suckling October 2017 Aromas of black licorice and blackberry. Blueberry, too. This is so complex. Full body, extremely silky and polished with lovely tannins. Deep and long. It seems powerful and rich yet ends so balanced and refined. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and cabernet franc.
91+/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Sept 2019 Brancaia's 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark and thickly concentrated wine with plenty of black fruit, spice, tar and campfire ash. This was a scorching hot and dry year, and this wine reminds you of this fact thanks to its concentration and thick density. There is some sweetness here, in the form of blackberry syrup and crème de cassis, and the wine's structure is apparent. Everything is enhanced and enlarged in this vintage. Although the score is similar, this wine is very different in character to the 2016 vintage. I've given this wine a shorter drinking window as well. Open it soon with some lamb and stuffed black olives. Some 20,000 bottles were made.
92/100 Punkte Vinous Aug 2019 The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is bold, forward and resonant, with striking depth and plenty of varietal character. Black cherry, mocha, truffle, leather, spice, menthol and espresso give the 2017 terrific aromatic intensity and nuance to play off the wine's natural exuberance. Stated more simply, the 2017 is flat-out delicious.
90/100 Punkte Robert Parker Oct 2019 This hot-vintage wine is pleasantly luminous and bright with simple fruit, citrus and mineral tones that keep the palate refreshed. The wine is made almost exclusively in stainless steel to keep it simple.
91/100 Punkte James Suckling, Okt 2019 A bright, fresh Orvieto Classico that suggests white peaches, nectarines and loquat. Clear-cut and quite taut for this appellation on the palate, thanks to a persistent line of acidity and subtle citrus flavors. Drink now.
91/100 Punkte Robert Parker Dec 2019 The 2017 Pombal do Vesúvio (Quinta do Vesúvio) is mostly a 54/40 blend of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional with 6% Tinta Amarela, aged for eight months in used French oak. It comes in at 14.4% alcohol, an uptick from last year's vintage. Wow. The fruit here seems to be the essence of young fruit, primary, sexy and just delicious. Of the Symington selections this issue (including the sister producer Prats & Symington), this is the best value, the biggest overachiever. One of the best in the brand so far#maybe the best yet#this starts off with that great fruit laced with plums and dried blueberries, but it does not neglect the concepts of balance, finesse and structure. Beautifully constructed, this has moderate tannins to support the fruit and a big, long finish. It feels fresh rather than jammy, despite both its power and sex appeal. The only question now is where this goes#can it develop some complexity, some additional distinction in the c
95/100 Punkte Robert Parker December 2019 The 2017 Tinto (Quinta do Vesúvio), the Estate red, is a 56/41 blend of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional with a dollop of Tinta Amarela, all aged for 16 months in French oak (80% new). It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. A Big Boy this year, this shows off the typical fruit of this great estate. Sexier but less refined than the Chryseia (reviewed under Prats & Symington), it has fine concentration. Those are simply relative terms, though, as both do everything very well. Although relatively less elegant, this is by no means jammy or even close to clumsy. It is also beautifully constructed. In fact, I was impressed with its balance and refinement. It always retains finesse and focus. The next day, the fruit was more expressive. It still finished with firmness, but it was much more accessible. This is a beautiful Estate Tinto, maybe the best yet. It should age well. It should also steadily improve in the cellar, and it does require some cellari
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker, March 2020 From one of the coolest plots of the cru ("Rauheneck") that is already shadowed in the afternoon, the 2018 Riesling Smaragd Ried Loibenberg is beautifully clear and fine on the nose, with very elegant and ripe Riesling aromas intermixed with the coolish and flinty aromas reminiscent of the Steinertal. Concentrated, lush, piquant and elegant on the palate, this is a promising, very elegant and fleshy Riesling with a stimulating salty finish. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.
94/100 Punkte James Suckling, September 2018 Another pronounced yet remarkably fresh nose for a 2015 Super Tuscan with notes of graphite, crushed stones, lavender, blackcurrants and cedar. Full body, wonderful fruit and acid balance, ripe yet grippy tannins and a long, chewy finish. Drink in 2021.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker Oct 2019 A blend of 65% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Montepulciano, the 2016 A.D. 1212 (with a really cool hand design on the front label) is a versatile and accessible red that would pair with meat lasagna or meatloaf. The bouquet is infused with purple and black fruit nuances with a good measure of spice and toast. This wine is mostly executed in steel, with a part that is aged in barrique for 12 months.
92/100 Punkt James Suckling November 2018 Deep and vibrant dark-berry aromas with fresh flowers and hot stones, following through to a full body, chewy and dusty tannins and a long, flavorful finish with chocolate undertones to it all. Drink in 2020, but already beautiful.
