    This Amarone sees the same blend of grapes you get in the Podere Cariano, but the 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Podere le Marognole is a bigger and more opulent wine. The sweetness is more evident in this expression (with 7.5 grams of residual sugar and 15% alcohol). You get robust dark fruit, prune and raisin with tar, smoke and black olive. This wine is aged in new oak barrique for 36 months, and you taste that extra spice and toasted intensity as a result. The wine's fiber and texture show big density and thick concentration. This medium-cool vintage saw 3,228 bottles produced.

    Deep, dark and sophisticated, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Corte Pavone is a solid buy from this vintage. The wine opens to an inky dark appearance and a deep garnet color. The aromas span over to black fruit, oak spice, tobacco and espresso. They definitely represent the more contemporary side of the Sangiovese bouquet. There is good textural firmness and volume here to glue all those strong flavors tightly together.

This is well-made and powerful but still has a lot of fruit aromas and juice. Keep it for a year or two. 13.5% alcohol. Tasted in Zurich in December 2019.

Full-bodied, rich and lush, it shows honeyed bergamot and pineapple fruit balanced by clean citrus and anise notes. Bravo!

An impressively complex, mineral-accented bouquet displays aromas of ripe citrus and orchard fruits, nori, buttered toast and jasmine, and a hint of anise sneaks in as the wine opens up. At once deep and lithe on the palate, offering vibrant Meyer lemon, pear, gingerbread and fennel flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Displays superb tension and thrust on a mineral- and floral-driven finish that refuses to let up. I'd have absolutely no problem lining up this remarkable wine alongside a group of high-end Grand Cru white Burgundies from that region's biggest names.

This is a great, slowly developing Veltliner with remarkable elegance, finesse and mineral freshness. Quite powerful on the aftertaste. Bottled in August 2019 and tasted at the domain in September.

Ripe, intense and juicy on the palate, this is a more charming, lush and accessible Veltliner compared to the Liebenberg, but the finish has the same vitality, mineral freshness and tension. The Loibenberg GV is just warmer and more charming in its remarkably elegant character. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.

    The 2016 Il Caberlot is a dark, spicy and intense wine that pricks the tongue with its freshness and its thickly concentrated fruit. The bouquet peels back with thick layers of blackberry, spice, leather and campfire ash. Those aromatic elements are all extreme, but they ultimately fit together with extreme precision. The wine offers just a hint of the pyridine, or green aromas you might expect of Cabernet Sauvignon, with plenty of the darkness and dimension you get with well-managed fruit harvested at optimal ripeness. The wine is fermented in steel and then aged in barrique (of which 80% are new) for 22 months.

    The 2015 Lacima is really impressive. It's a serious, balsamic and reticent red with a faithful expression of rocks through its blend of 70% Mencía with 20% Brancellao and 5% each Mouratón and Sousón. The grapes were very healthy, and the crop was quite small and concentrated. It fermented with natural yeasts in open-top 500-liter French oak vats and had a long élevage of 17 months in used barriques followed by no less than 14 months in bottle before it was released. It combines power with elegance, and it has concentration and nuance and feels quite young and lively. It's tasty, clean and long, and it seems to have good balance and all that is needed for a long and positive development in bottle. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Lacima so far.

    The 2017 Tinto (Quinta do Vesúvio), the Estate red, is a 56/41 blend of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional with a dollop of Tinta Amarela, all aged for 16 months in French oak (80% new). It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. A Big Boy this year, this shows off the typical fruit of this great estate. Sexier but less refined than the Chryseia (reviewed under Prats & Symington), it has fine concentration. Those are simply relative terms, though, as both do everything very well. Although relatively less elegant, this is by no means jammy or even close to clumsy. It is also beautifully constructed. In fact, I was impressed with its balance and refinement. It always retains finesse and focus. The next day, the fruit was more expressive. It still finished with firmness, but it was much more accessible. This is a beautiful Estate Tinto, maybe the best yet. It should age well. It should also steadily improve in the cellar, and it does require some cellari

    Donnafugata's Tancredi is one of Sicily's most popular red wines, and it's easy to see why. The 2016 Tancredi is rich and soft at the same time, with a very pleasing texture that caresses the palate with dark fruit, spice and plum. The wine is mostly a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Nero d'Avola, although some Tannat and other grapes are thrown in. It ages in oak for 14 months. This is a complete effort that boasts thick layering and volume.

    The 2016 Sicilia Adènzia is equal parts Nero d'Avola and Syrah from the heart of the Mediterranean. This is a robust and velvety-textured red wine that makes a natural pairing partner to meat or pasta with ragù. The wine speaks in clear tones with well-enunciated elements of black fruit, spice, leather and tobacco. The Syrah seems to make the biggest impact in terms of bouquet, and the Nero d'Avola guides the mid-weight nature of the palate. This wine is simple, bright and fun to drink.

    The eponymous red 2015 Exopto is an atypical blend of 70% Graciano from the south, a grape that can keep very good acidity and ripens nicely in warmer vintages (like 2015) and 30% Tempranillo from old vines. In previous vintages, the wine had less Graciano and some 10% Garnacha, but they didn't like what the Garnacha did to the blend in 2015, so they left it out for the first time ever. It fermented in 1,500-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts, daily pigéage and malolactic in barrel in the spring. The wine matured in 225- and 500-liter oak casks, and they have reduced the new oak to some 30%. Even though they have reduced the new oak and gone for larger volumes, it's still a little marked by the oak and might need some more time in bottle to finish integrating, because there is very nice stuffing here. It has very healthy acidity that should help it develop nicely in bottle. This is elegant and open, less stressed by tannins, within the power

    The red 2017 Horizonte de Exopto is a traditional blend of Tempranillo with 10% each Garnacha and Graciano, but now not all of grapes come from the village of Ábalos#since 2016, they have added two plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured 50/50 in 600-liter demi-muids and 225-liter barriques for one year. The wine is surprisingly fresh, expressive and aromatic and has a touch of black pepper, perhaps because there are more grapes from higher-altitude vineyards that didn't suffer the frost, and the result might be fresher than some wines from 2016 or 2015. The move to bigger barrels and less oak seems to have paid back with much better integration of the wood and additional nuance. A great effort for the vintage and a bit of a surprise#lighter and less concentrated but more drinkable. 9,000 bottles were filled in November 2018.

It has some spicy and smoky undertones and a dry, long finish. This is a modern and luxurious style of Ribeira Sacra.

Lush, fresh and very elegant on the palate, displaying perfect fruit ripeness, this is a perfectly balanced and absolutely delicious Pinot Noir with fleshy cherry fruit, very fine tannins and vivacious acidity that is pretty spectacular given this warm vintage. This is highly stimulating and ready to drink, although you can also cellar this beauty for 10 or more years. 13% alcohol. Tasted in Zurich in December 2019.

Terribly deep and spicy, full-bodied and powerful, with great purity, lingering salinity and mineral tension, this is a dense and powerful, tightly knit and concentrated, phenolic, structured Ziergegg with great aging potential.
