95/100 Punkte Robert Parker August 2019 The 2009 Gloria Reynolds Art & Tradition Tinto is an equal blend of Alicante Bouschet and Trincadeira, aged for 24 months in new French oak. It comes in at 14% alcohol. Far more burly and muscular than the 2011 Grande Reserva this issue#even with two extra years of bottle age-this is the one where the winery goes for a statement and let's it all hang out. Yet, with the late release, this has come to a place where it is at least drinkable now, if still a bit tight. Long on the finish, with the beefy nuances of the Alicante dominating the wine, this also has surprising freshness, some acidity that lifts the fruit. In this big and very warm year, this seems impressive for its success in maintaining its balance. At the same time, it adds a layer of depth and power to the Grande Reserva. This seems positioned to age very well#the producer thinks well over 30 years-but let's start here and see where it goes in time.
91-92/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Feb 2019 From 50-year-old Swiss vines and younger Burgundy clones, the 2017 Malanser Pinot Noir Selvenen is clear, pure, fresh and spicy on the nose, with red fruit and slatey aromas. Lush and intense but pure and fresh on the palate, this is a lean and crystalline Pinot with density and an intense length. Very promising. Tasted from barrel in November 2018.
95+/100 Punkte Robert Parker Oct 2019 Donnafugata's showcase wine is the always delightful Mille e Una Notte, with 40,000 bottles released in this vintage. The 2015 Sicilia Mille e Una Notte is a beautifully saturated and dark wine, with an elegant full-bodied style and plenty of black fruit and plum that shines bright. The quality of those primary aromas is radiant and fresh. The wine shows its complexity in a second wave of spice, leather and black olive. The blend is mostly Nero d'Avola with Petit Verdot, Syrah and other grapes, and the wine rests in oak barrel for 14 months. This vintage is particularly rich, soft and exuberant.
98+/100 Punkte Robert Parker August 2019 The 2017 Nit de Nin La Coma d#en Romeu is from an extremely dry and early harvest that delivered just five hectoliters per hectare! That means they only produced 1,330 bottles from the 1.5 hectares of Garnacha on those slate terraces at 350 meters in altitude. It was bottled in April 2019. It has a beautiful and subtle nose that's very spicy (cloves and cumin, curry and pink pepper) and floral, with a palate that feels light but has great depth and inner power, with pungent flavors and subtle minerality.
93/100 Punkte Robert Parker December 2018 The 2017 Ried Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd is from the eastern part of the cru where the soil is very poor and the microclimate significantly cooler than in the central part of the famous cru. The nose of the 2017 is clear and crunchy but intense and concentrated with its ripe white, refreshing fruit aromas. Dense and concentrated on the palate, this is a full-bloodied, tightly woven and very elegant Loibenberg Riesling with great grip, mineral tension and piquant lemon fruit flavors. Highly stimulating on the intense, lovely, astringent finish with yellow fruit and floral flavors on the long, aromatic aftertaste. Tasted in Unterloiben, Wachau, September 2018.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker February 2018 The vineyard-designated 2015 Finca Valdepoleo is pure Tempranillo from vines planted in 1973 on limestone and clay soils at 630 meters altitude in the village of Laguardia. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak barrels for 14 months. It shows the style of the vintage#approachable, juicy, medium to full-bodied, clean, modern and with good ripeness and nicely integrated oak. The palate shows good balance and a powerful wine with long life ahead. There is less structure than in 2014, gentler, more approachable, with a rare combination of power and elegance. It's also balsamic and faintly Mediterranean, nicely balanced.
95/100 Punkte James Suckling August 2018 The enveloping mulberry and spice aromas on the nose are only the first of the wonders of this stunning red Rioja, which has a great tannin structure that gives the medium-full-bodied palate both stature and excitement. Very long, fresh herbal finish of considerable complexity. Drink or hold.
94/100 Punkte Robert Parker April 2016 Selected in the best plot of the Zieregg and only in great vintages, the 2012 Sauvignon Blanc Zieregg Vinothek Reserve displays a very clear and pure bouquet with lemon flavors. This fascinating nose seems to be delivered on a perfumed stone plate. Pure perfume, no eau de toilette, of course. The palate is the extension of the nose, although the finish reveals a sweetish and charming juiciness that takes away a bit of the purity - which I like too much, but many readers might find too intellectual or not sensual enough. Ripe and cooked/baked white fruits (apples) intertwine with mineral flavors on the highly elegant palate, which finishes with verve, salt, and ripe and concentrated fruit flavors. This is doubtlessly great wine and there is no Sauvignon I know on planet wine that is comparable to this Zieregg. And that's a probably the greatest compliment I can give to this extraordinary wine.
96-98/100 Punkte Robert Parker August 2017 The golden-yellow colored, still cloudy sample of the 2015 Zieregg Sauvignon Blanc is the "picture book Tement wine" for Armin Tement. It contains all of the single plots (and more of course) and opens with a deep, intense and perfectly ripe but also flinty bouquet that indicates great depth and chalky minerality along with purity, complexity and herbal flavors. Full-bodied, silky and generous, this is a mind-blowing Austrian wine that is rich but finessed, highly complex and elegant, powerful and persistent but also fresh, vital and enormously mineral, with endless salinity. This 2015 is beautifully balanced but, nevertheless, full of tension and length. What a great and complex, pure and finessed Grand Cru from Sauvignon Blanc. And what a finish! This is a legend in the making. Tasted as a sample in May 2017.
89/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Jul 2016 The 2015 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Sherazade is a balanced and very attractive red wine with loads of ripe fruit and dark spice presented with equal billing. This wine is silky and smooth in texture yet it offers abundant fruit notes of black cherry and plum along the way. There's a touch of fennel seed or anise as well that recalls some of the most distinctive flavors of Sicily and Nero d'Avola. This expression is also loaded with primary fruit. The wine is well worth its low price.
91/100 Punkte Vinous Dec 2016 Bright red. Blue fruit and sweet spices on the explosively fruity nose. Then fresh, bright and juicy, offering red berry, red cherry and mineral flavors lifted by a bright violet kick. Finishes long and vibrant with a whiplash of fresh dark berries and noteworthy youthful tannic bite. Relatively low fermentation temperatures (79°F/26°C) help express the fruity nature of Nero d'Avola. Full of early appeal, this is a gorgeous wine for the money.
90+/100 Punkt Robert Parker August 2019 The 2016 Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso Capitel San Rocco shows great dark fruit intensity, spread over a rich mid-weight style. I found the breezes of rosemary essence and eucalyptus oil to be very distinctive and nice. It's the perfect choice for roasted lamb with garlic and rosemary potatoes, and it's a great value too, thanks to the 100,000 bottles made. This wine was first produced in 1976, and the Tedeschi family was among the first to use the Ripasso method in Valpolicella in its commercial winemaking.
93/100 Punkte James Suckling, November 2018 A Valpolicella Ripasso that effortlessly combines ripeness and elegance. Fine blackberries, ripe plums and cocoa powder on the nose. The bright acidity and the supple tannins are beautifully integrated on the palate. Long and silky, dry finish. Drink or hold.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker Feb 2019 The nose of the 2015 Lalama reveals a warm and dry year with good ripeness. Yields were also low because they lost some 62% of the grapes to hail, and the wine is concentrated and powerful, quite fruit-driven and expressive, juicy and chewy. It has some spicy and smoky undertones and a dry, long finish. This is a modern and luxurious style of Ribeira Sacra.
Idealer Aperitif.
90/100 Punkte Robert Parker Apr 2019 The latest rendition of Drappier's NV Brut Nature Pinot Noir Zero Dosage André et Michel offers up pretty scents of crisp green apples, beeswax, dried white flowers and oyster shell. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and vibrant, with a youthfully frothy mousse, ripe acids and a precise, chalky finish. There's none of the austerity that mars some no-dosage Champagnes, and the wine makes a persuasive case for the proposition that the Aube is one of the areas best suited to that style.
94/100 Punkte Robert Parker December 2018 It felt like the 2015 El Terroir was more austere than the 2014, even if the year was more generous, especially on the palate, where the wine shows strong minerality. It's more telluric than 2014, a slightly darker shade of blue, and it opens up with time in the glass. This wine has achieved a very good level, with a rare combination of power and elegance, especially in this 2015. 26,315 bottles were filled in May 2017.
93/100 Punkte Robert Parker, June 2016 The NV Arpège Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru is 100% Chardonnay based on 2010 (62%) and 2011 (38%), tirage in March 2012 and disgorgement in January 2015 with 4.5 grams of dosage. There is pure chalk and freshness on the nose, with white and intense fruit, as well as a yeasty Jura-like character. On the palate, this is a very complex and highly mineral Champagne with great purity, finesse, elegance and character. There is a lot of mineral grip and great complexity.
92/100 Punkte Vinous, November 2014 The NV Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Arpège is a gorgeous, sculpted Champagne built on precision. Crushed rocks, slate, green pears and citrus jump from the glass as this vibrant Champagne shows off its tense, pulsating personality. This is a gorgeous Champagne from Pascal Doquet. The Arpège is a blend of 2010 (19%), 2009 (50%) and 2008 (31%). Disgorged February 7, 2014. Dosage is 4 grams per liter.
93/100 Punkte Falstaff, Juli 2018 Helles Goldgelb, Silberreflexe.
91/100 Punkte Robert Parker April 2018 The blend of the 2012 Terrers is unusually high in Xarello and Parellada, 60% and 7% respectively, with only 33% Macabeo. 2012 was one of the warmest and lower-yielding years in recent times (29 hectoliters per hectare), and they consider it a year apt for long aging. It has great concentration, but at the same time, the wine has higher acidity, which makes it very balanced. It aged sur lie for 56 months before it was disgorged. This is a little more oxidative of the three, with a little more development, more Mediterranean. It's very tasty.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Feb 2019 The 2016 Auvernier Chardonnay is pure, intense and mineral on the nose, where ripe fruit and very fine chalk and sur lie aromas are displayed. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, remarkably fine and elegant wine with an enormously intense, complex and persistent finish. Still young and fresh but very promising. Tasted in February 2019.
93+/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Aug 2019 The 2017 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu confirms its strong showing last year, unwinding in the glass with aromas of peach, grapefruit and honeycomb, with some subtle musky floral tones waiting in the wings that I suspect will become more prominent with time. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and gourmand, with racy acids and a long, saline finish. Billaud tells me that this was cropped at less than 20 hectoliters per hectare, and that shows.
92-94/100 Punkte Vinous, Aug 2018 The 2017 Chablis Mont de Milieu comes from three parcels of 35, 60 and 80-year old vines in different parts of the vineyard that crop at just 25hl/ha. It has a classic Chablis bouquet with a potent sea influence, oyster shells and cockles, and a whiff of kelp. The palate is beautifully balanced with a crisp line of acidity, very harmonious and elegant, the 20% barrel maturation just lending a little more weight to the finish. Superb.
90/100 Punkte Robert Parker Dec 2013 The non-vintage Franciacorta Brut is a very ripe expression with loads of yellow fruit and apricot that add immediate lift and intensity. The mouthfeel is broad and thick with loads of deep texture and creamy intensity on the finish. This elegant Franciacorta Brut (80-20 Chardonnay and Pinot Nero) delivers a soft and expansive interpretation of this premium Italian sparkling wine territory.
90/100 Punkte Robert Parker April 2018 The balsamic and fruit-driven 2016 Gotes Blanques is an unoaked Garnacha Blanca from the village of La Morera de Montsant at 650 meters in altitude. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and was partly aged in cement vats. It's very fresh and delineated, with very good acidity and focused, pungent flavors and a mineral finish.
90/100 Punkte Robert Parker Dec 2017 The 2016 La Zarcita is a blend of Trincadeira Preta, Touriga Nacional and Garnacha Tintorera grapes from limestone, clay and sand soils. In 2015 they also planted red Garnacha with the idea to include it in future vintages of this blend. There was more rain than average in 2016, and that allowed the ripening cycle to be longer, which is something really good in a region like this. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic and eight months in new and second use 500-liter French oak barrels. It's very floral and perfumed, with a captivating nose. It's still a straightforward red but with more depth than in previous vintages and especially great freshness. 2016 seems like a very good vintage in the zone. The palate is approachable and soft, with very good acidity. And it's a bargain! 30,000 bottles produced.
94/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Feb 2019 The dark colored 2015 Jenins Pinot Noir Sélection Barrique is a bit shut down right now, but it indicates deep, ripe, refined and elegant fruit on the nose that keeps the flinty terroir aromas alive and doesn't dominate the bouquet. Rich and with a velvety texture, the 2015 reflects the warm year as well as the terroir that keeps the freshness and mineral vitality even in dry and sunny vintages like this. The finish is powerful and intense, very long but pure, fresh and salty as well. I'd keep the wine for another 2 or 3 years, but I suppose you can serve it for a decade. The finish shows such good concentration, tight structure and mineral tension. The tannins, by the way, are legion, but they are fine and polymerizing with body and texture. A great Swiss Pinot indeed, which I terribly underrated on a very hot August day in 2017, but I am happily generous (but fair) with the 2015 today. Tasted in January 2019.
94/100 Punkte Falstaff, April 2019 Kraftvolles, leuchtendes Strohgelb.
93/100 Punkte Robert Parker August 2019 I drank this beautiful wine with a dinner of couscous with chicken, fresh mint and preserved lemon. The 2016 Friuli Isonzo Rive Alte Sauvignon Blanc Vieris is not a pungent Sauvignon but rather a beautifully tempered and elegant one. It has the kind of creamy and long persistence that, to me, is an indication of a compellingly food-friendly white wine. There are lovely notes of candied orange peel with almond and fragrant garden herb. The wine ages on the lees in barrique for nine months. Production is 32,864-bottles strong.
Finessenreicher, eleganter Pinot.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Sep 2017 The 2015 Elfingen Rüeget opens with an intense, gorgeously spicy, pure, chalky and cherry-scented bouquet with red fruit and white peach aromas#terrific! On the palate this is a full-bodied, round but dry and spicy Pinot Noir with an enormously juicy and concentrated palate. Powerful, firm and fresh, with great tension and purity but also concentration#this is one of my favorite Swiss Pinot Noirs.
91+/100 Punkte Robert Parker, August 2017 The 2015 Pouilly Fuisse Vers Cras comes from two hectares of 50-year-old vines that spends 12 months in cask and another four months in vat. It has a fresh and focused bouquet with subtle honeysuckle and beeswax aromas threaded through the citrus fruit. I appreciate the manner in which this unfolds with aeration. The palate is vibrant on the entry with good acidity but then the second half just seems a little simple by comparison. A wine of two halves, the first better than the second, but overall a very sound Pouilly-Fuissé Vers Cras that may well warrant a higher score in the future.
90/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Sept 2017 The 2015 Rosso del Ticino Sottobosco is a dark purple colored assemblage of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Leathery and with a bit of volatile acidity on the deep and intense nose that displays dark, spicy fruit aromas, this is an elegant, pretty silky textured and refreshing red blend with fine, fresh tannins and an aromatic finish. The general style is a bit robust but this has good character and can age for 10 to 15 years. Tasted in Zurich, August 2017.
98/100 Punkte Robert Parker August 2019 The 2016 Nit de Nin Mas d#en Caçador was produced with grapes from 78- to 113-year-old vines in the Mas d'en Caçador vineyard in Porrera. It's a blend of Garnacha Negra, Garnacha Peluda and Cariñena with some 5% white grapes. It fermented with full clusters and indigenous yeasts in a 3,200-liter oak vat and matured in a similar 2,700-liter oak vat. It has great balance and is ripe and Mediterranean, without any excess; it's incredibly elegant and has character. In a way, it makes me think of a classical Châteauneuf, with fine tannins and subtle minerality. 4071 bottles and 60 magnums were filled in April 2019.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker Oct 2019 A blend of 65% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Montepulciano, the 2016 A.D. 1212 (with a really cool hand design on the front label) is a versatile and accessible red that would pair with meat lasagna or meatloaf. The bouquet is infused with purple and black fruit nuances with a good measure of spice and toast. This wine is mostly executed in steel, with a part that is aged in barrique for 12 months.
92/100 Punkt James Suckling November 2018 Deep and vibrant dark-berry aromas with fresh flowers and hot stones, following through to a full body, chewy and dusty tannins and a long, flavorful finish with chocolate undertones to it all. Drink in 2020, but already beautiful.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker May 2017 The 2014 Val d'Arno di Sopra BògginAnfora sees fruit sourced from a 4.5-hectare single vineyard of Sangiovese grapes. This plot also makes fruit for the blended red Torrione, but the central part of the vineyard goes through a careful selection process to make this wine. The fruit is organic. The wine is fermented in amphorae, some purchased in Spain and others using Tuscan clay from potters in Impruneta. This vintage saw a slightly shorter maceration time (compared to the 2013 vintage) only because the grape skins were more delicate in this difficult vintage. The results are very lively and tonic with bright ruby Sangiovese tones of cherry, moist earth and forest floor. I'd suggest a slightly shorter drinking window for this vintage.
93/100 Punkte Vinous, July 2016 It's interesting to taste the 2014 Bòggina Anfora (Bògginanfora), Petrolo's Sangiovese done in amphora next to the same wine aged in oak. The amphora wine is initially a bit softer and creamier in its contours, but it also offers less development in the glass. Lavender, plum, menthol, sage and sweet herbs lead into the expressive finish. This is another very pretty wine from Petrolo and proprietor Luca Sanjust.
89/100 Punkte Robert Parker Dec 2019 The rosé 2018 Hito Rosado is a fresher, young and pale equivalent to their red, bottled unoaked and without malolactic. This is a serious and mineral rosé, with a reductive personality and a little backward, not an explosive rosé but rather austere, with a balanced palate and a dry finish. Not a banal rosé. 54,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2018.
93/100 Punkte Falstaff März 2018 Sehr sattes, tiefes Rubinrot.
91+/100 Punkte Robert Parker Februar 2018 The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is a bright and vibrant red wine that really pops from the glass. It exhibits a cheerful vertical lift that embraces all the senses. That buoyant bouquet is duly followed by robust cherry flavors with an impressive level of richness and concentration. This wine shows good structure and staying power. It has the budding complexity that comes so naturally to the mighty wines of Montalcino.
