The nose of the 2015 Lalama reveals a warm and dry year with good ripeness. Yields were also low because they lost some 62% of the grapes to hail, and the wine is concentrated and powerful, quite fruit-driven and expressive, juicy and chewy. It has some spicy and smoky undertones and a dry, long finish. This is a modern and luxurious style of Ribeira Sacra.

One of the benchmark reds from Ribeira Sacra is the 2016 Lalama, a blend of Mencía with 10% Brancellao, Mouratón, Sousón and Garnacha Tintorera that is very expressive and fresh in the cooler 2016 vintage. It shows the more floral and pretty face of Mencía (even if it has some 10% other varieties) produced in a very approachable and attractive way that is easy to understand by a wide audience. It has a nice combination of aromas, fruit, herbs, flowers and spices, with judicious oak that gives it a creamy touch. It's nicely textured and has a soft and balanced mouthfeel, fine tannins and balanced acidity. Delicious!

This expression of northern Italy's popular Lagrein grape by Cantina Produttori Bolzano shows a more pronounced mineral note that reminds you of the white calcareous rock that makes up the special geology of the Dolomites. The 2017 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Taber benefits greatly from that mineral signature. It adds focus and dimension to a grape that tends to offer inky crème de cassis and blackberry syrup that needs a little holding back at times. Recognizing those smaller aromatic details is not always easy with this variety. This expression is more contoured and ultimately elegant as a result. This is a terrific rendition of the not-always-easy Lagrein grape.

The 2015 Lacima is really impressive. It's a serious, balsamic and reticent red with a faithful expression of rocks through its blend of 70% Mencía with 20% Brancellao and 5% each Mouratón and Sousón. The grapes were very healthy, and the crop was quite small and concentrated. It fermented with natural yeasts in open-top 500-liter French oak vats and had a long élevage of 17 months in used barriques followed by no less than 14 months in bottle before it was released. It combines power with elegance, and it has concentration and nuance and feels quite young and lively. It's tasty, clean and long, and it seems to have good balance and all that is needed for a long and positive development in bottle. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Lacima so far.

The 2016 La Zarcita is a blend of Trincadeira Preta, Touriga Nacional and Garnacha Tintorera grapes from limestone, clay and sand soils. In 2015 they also planted red Garnacha with the idea to include it in future vintages of this blend. There was more rain than average in 2016, and that allowed the ripening cycle to be longer, which is something really good in a region like this. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic and eight months in new and second use 500-liter French oak barrels. It's very floral and perfumed, with a captivating nose. It's still a straightforward red but with more depth than in previous vintages and especially great freshness. 2016 seems like a very good vintage in the zone. The palate is approachable and soft, with very good acidity. And it's a bargain! 30,000 bottles produced.

Their top Godello white from Bierzo is the 2017 La Revelía, produced with fruit from a warm, ripe and dry year. It fermented in 500-liter French oak barrels, where the wine matured for eight months. Despite the ripe year, the wine has kept its poise and balance, the oak feels very integrated. It has good freshness and a lively palate with focused flavors and a long finish.

I didn't get the Burgundian nose in the 2016 La Mimbrera that I saw in the 2015. For proprietor and winemaker Tom Puyabert, 2016 is not a truly Atlantic vintage, and this feels somewhat more Mediterranean than the 2015, with notes of rosemary, thyme and even esparto grass, not something I have seen in many other wines from Rioja. The tannins might be amplified by the strong chalky sensation from the high limestone content of the soils, which also impart a special tastiness to the wines. It has a sapid, almost salty finish. There are more tannins, and the wine feels a bit young and in need of some more time in the bottle. 500 bottles were filled in April 2018.

A varietal Garnacha from Riva de Tereso, the 2017 La Dula comes from a small 80-year-old plot planted in 1944, so production is extremely low. It's bottled unoaked and matured in amphorae to see what the pure grape delivers. It's fruit-driven and shows some ripeness from a warm and dry year. This tends to have very high acidity, so the grapes are picked late to achieve good ripeness. It fermented in tinaja (amphorae), where it's kept for a few months and then is bottled early. There are perfumed notes, and something herbal/wild that I like. The palate reveals fine-grained tannins and clean flavors. Only 670 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018.

The 2014 La Dama, as with the El Terroir bottling, is produced with Garnacha grapes from vines planted starting in 1903. They told me they consider 2014 a beautiful vintage, healthy and balanced (although the organic and biodynamic vineyards then to be healthy and balanced every vintage!), and a pleasure to vinify. 2014 is a very complete vintage, with ripeness and freshness, elegance and power. This La Dama is a great example of it. They select the wines from stonier vineyards, where the soils are shallower and the mother rock is very close to the surface. These plots tend to produce more austere, mineral and elegant wines, where the chalkiness of the tannins talks about the limestone soils. This has to be among the finest Garnacha produced in Spain. This shows more elegant than any previous years, possibly the best vintage to date. Bravo.

The vines are worked organically and biodynamically, and the fermentation and work in the vineyard is with the natural yeasts and with as little intervention as possible, as they want to express the place and the conditions of the year. 2016 was a cooler year with good rain, perfect and slow ripening of the grapes that kept good acidity. The wines are fresh, floral and expressive, especially this one#it exploded with aromas of violets as I pulled the cork and decanted the wine. A blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Ilatraia is a terrific, full-bodied expression from Tuscany. If you love this combination of full-throttle grapes, I suggest you try this rendition. It tends to be more delicate and nuanced at the edges compared to a similar blend from a New World wine region, like say, California. The wine is contoured and full but never heavy. Indeed, the aromas of blackberry, spice and tar remain surprisingly fresh and bright. This is a big wine to be sure, but there is a lot of tonic energy packed tight within.

A firm and silky wine with creamy texture and lovely dark fruit. Medium to full body. Very intense and not shy in terms of pretty fruit. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and cabernet franc.

    Falstaff 95/100

    95/100 Punkte Falstaff April 2018

    Parker 92/100

92/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Oct 2017
The 2014 Il Caberlot is a beautifully executed wine with an inky dark or otherwise impenetrable appearance. The bouquet shows decisive Cabernet-adjacent aromas of super dense blackberry with black olive and charred rosemary twig. The wine delivers immediate power and intensity with excellent focus and sharpness. Perhaps the mouthfeel is a touch thinner and shorter in this vintage (as is to be expected), but given its overall opulence, this is a welcome characteristic. This wine is usually only available in magnums.

    96/100 Punkte Vinous Jan 2018
Podere Il Carnasciale's 2014 Il Caberlot is all class. Sophisticated and medium in body in this vintage, it possesses striking aromatic depth and nuance to match its decidedly midweight personality. Layers of bright, red-toned fruit, blood orange and cinnamon add to the wine's decidedly exotic personality. In some vintages, Caberlot is more overt and exuberant, but the 2014 is a cool, reserved wine that needs time in bottle for its inner sweetness to fully emerge. Even at this early stage, though, it is striking.

    Parker 95+/100

95+/100 Punkte Robert Parker, May 2019
Made with the elusive Caberlot grape, the 2015 Il Caberlot (with only 3 ,100 Magnums produced) is a beautifully ripe, dense and rich expression from one of the most beautiful spots in Tuscany. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel and undergo malolactic fermentation in barrique, before a 22-month aging period in small French oak (of which 75% is new). The wine is impeccably balanced and concentrated with dark, plummy fruit, spice, tar and savory tobacco. Caberlot is a distant relative of Cabernet, and you can tell as much as you contemplate the bouquet and full-bodied appearance of the mouthfeel of this warm vintage Tuscan red.

    96/100 Punkte Vinous Feb 2019
The 2015 Il Caberlot opens with a blast of blackberry jam, chocolate, licorice and spice. Exotic and deep, with tremendous character, the 2015 delivers serious flavor intensity while remaining light on its feet for such a powerful wine. The combination of textural resonance and finesse is striking in the 2015.

    James Suckling 96/100

96/100 Punkte James Suckling September 2018
Shows a really distinctive herbal edge of blackberry leaves, charcoal and black peppers. Iodine and crushed-stone undertones in addition to vivid blackcurrants. Full-bodied, very linear and well defined with a firm tannin backbone, driven acidity and a mineral, chewy finish. Delicious now but better in 2022.

    Falstaff 97/100

    97/100 Punkte Falstaff Feb 2020

    Parker 96/100

96/100 Punkte Robert Parker August 2019
The 2016 Il Caberlot is a dark, spicy and intense wine that pricks the tongue with its freshness and its thickly concentrated fruit. The bouquet peels back with thick layers of blackberry, spice, leather and campfire ash. Those aromatic elements are all extreme, but they ultimately fit together with extreme precision. The wine offers just a hint of the pyridine, or green aromas you might expect of Cabernet Sauvignon, with plenty of the darkness and dimension you get with well-managed fruit harvested at optimal ripeness. The wine is fermented in steel and then aged in barrique (of which 80% are new) for 22 months.
