    Loimer's dry Riesling 2016 Ried Steinmassl "Erste Lage" offers a deep, mineral and complex bouquet of ripe peaches. Full-bodied, round and intense on the palate, this is a dense, highly elegant, complex, finessed and stimulating Riesling with firm but fine tannin structure and a piercing mineral character. The 2016 is probably the finest Riesling I have tasted from this vineyard and this domain so far. If you have the chance, keep it for 10 years before you appreciate all its talents! It's Riesling, not always easy in its youth, but the best is yet to come! Tasted in September 2017.

    Entirely from old vines in the Hallgartener Jungfer and macerated for 30 to 36 hours prior to the fermentation and aging in 600-liter Halbstück vats, the 2015 Rheingau Riesling Trocken "Revoluzzer" opens with an intense, fresh and concentrated bouquet of ripe, tropical fruits intermixed with smoky/mineral and discreet oaky flavors. Despite its ripeness and richness, the "Revoluzzer" (revolutionist) is quite pure and elegant on the complex nose. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and elegant but also fresh and tensioned Riesling with oaky and herbal flavors. It is tightly structured but well balanced and salty-vital in the finish, which reveals a juicy Riesling with chalky/mealy tannins and lingering salinity. It's a bit of a Burgundian Rheingau Riesling, if you so will. This has 13.5% alcohol. The acidity (no malic) is significantly lower than in the other Rieslings but ripe and vital.     The 2016 Kamptal Riesling Heiligenstein 1ÖTW is super pure, fresh, precise and mineral on the nose, offering flinty flavors of crushed stones and lemon juice. On the palate, this Heiligenstein is enormously finessed, racy-vital and elegant. It shows a certain lightness without losing complexity, intensity or length. The wine is firmly structured, but all seems filigreed and mineral here, with no charming sweetness, no creaminess, no compromises. It is a pure Heiligenstein, and the finish is salty, piquant and very compact. A highly promising dry Riesling and an impressive Heiligenstein. Tasted as a sample in late June 2017.

    The Hirsch 2012 Riesling Heiligenstein favors piquantly herbal and bittersweet flower-chomping in a manner reminiscent of its little brother Zobing village bottling. Transparency of apple and white peach not only to these floral and herbal elements but to stony, crystalline nuances is a striking feature on this Riesling-s admittedly spare and decidedly firm but juicy palate. Altogether metaphorically cooler and more restrained as well as less mouthwateringly savory in finish than its Gaisberg counterpart, this Heiligenstein should also prove very worth following through 2020 and become yet more rewarding along the way.

    Their vineyard-selection cuvée 2007 Reserva Particular currently in the market is from a great vintage in the region, especially for Xarello#even if this is a blend of 64% Macabeo and 36% Xarello, I think this has to be one of the finest vintages, at least in recent times, along with 2001 and 2004. This comes from three separate vineyards and is always a little riper, more developed, and in this vintage, it combines power with freshness, like in the best vintages. The 2007 vintage was dry, and Recaredo's vineyards yielded 33.5 hectoliters per hectare, when the appellation of origin allowed up to 88 hectoliters per hectare that year. The wine has 12% alcohol and an extremely low pH (2.96), which means very healthy acidity. The Xarello fermented in oak barrels and the Macabeo in stainless steel.     The 2016 Tinto (Quinta do Vesúvio), the Estate red, is a blend of 56% Touriga Nacional, 40% Touriga Franca and a dollop of Tinta Amarela aged for 18 months in French oak (80% new). It comes in at 14% alcohol. If you're comparing the high end from Symington-related labels this issue, this is very different from the Chryseia (under Prats & Symington). Here, you get a more muscular and concentrated wine. Here, there is more of an edge and a need for cellaring. Packed with plums and black cherries, it also has a darker and much richer flavor profile#there's a relatively warm feel here#than Chryseia, less elegance but more intensity in terms of both structure and fruit. To me, this sumptuous red is the better wine with a higher upside potential, although it certainly has some things to prove in the cellar. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and crisply fleshy, with a deep core of fruit, an elegant pinpoint mousse and tangy balancing acids, concluding with a long, nutty finish. This is a terrific rendition of this rare bottling, and it's more than a mere curio; indeed, it's well worth seeking out.

    The 2015 Prazo de Roriz is a roughly equal blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barroca, with small bits of Tinta Roriz and Tinta Amarela, aged for six months in used French oak. This is typically a good value. This might be my favorite in some time. There isn't a lot of concentration in the mid-palate and it isn't the type of wine you want to age for 20 years. It's not $50, either. It's a very nice bargain with many virtues. The fruit here is just gorgeous, vivid, pure and clean. The structure lifts it and delivers it beautifully to the palate. The texture is silky and the finish is just a bit tight. Overall, it is hard to lean up more on this since it doesn't have a lot of upside potential, but if you drink it over the next few years, you might like it even better than the score would suggest.

    The 2015 Pouilly Fuisse Vers Cras comes from two hectares of 50-year-old vines that spends 12 months in cask and another four months in vat. It has a fresh and focused bouquet with subtle honeysuckle and beeswax aromas threaded through the citrus fruit. I appreciate the manner in which this unfolds with aeration. The palate is vibrant on the entry with good acidity but then the second half just seems a little simple by comparison. A wine of two halves, the first better than the second, but overall a very sound Pouilly-Fuissé Vers Cras that may well warrant a higher score in the future.

    Bottled in July 2016 and released in September 2018, the 2015 Plus appears to be a bit more elegant compared to the more evolved 2013 that I tasted at the same time. It is not as sweet either. The bouquet offers pineapple, candied fruit and honey, but this vintage clearly has more room to grow and evolve. It's all primary fruit, but it is also more elegant as a result. Put this one away for a few years, and I bet it will become a very special Friulano.

    A 60/40 blend of Garnacha and Cariñena from the vineyard that names the wine, the 2016 Planetes de Nin saw a similar vinification and aging as the 2017 I tasted next to it, so the differences found were only due to the vintage and the moment of harvest. This is a fresher vintage, with tantalizing aromas that are subtle and elegant, with notes of violets and red cherries, nuanced and ever-changing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and nicely textured, with very fine tannins and fine chalky minerality. 9,108 bottles were filled in April 2017.

    The 2015 Planetes de Nin Blanc is a new white here produced with old local varieties, in reality a varietal of the almost nonexistent Cariñena Blanca. They were in search of a local white able to produce a varietal wine with low alcohol and good acidity, so they slowly regrafted almost one hectare of Cabernet Sauvignon from their Les Planetes vineyard with material found in an old vineyard. The whole clusters had a one-day soak, then pressed, then put to ferment with indigenous yeasts and the wine matured in oak barrels for some eight months. The 2015 is a lot more polished and sleek, round and precise, with good volume that somehow hides the minerality. However, there is no track record for this variety, and nobody really knows how the wine is going to evolve. 1,104 bottles were filled in June 2016.

Silky textured and elegant on the palate this is a very charming, medium to full-bodied, intense and fruity Pinot that develops a medium concentration and length.     The dark colored 2015 Jenins Pinot Noir Sélection Barrique is a bit shut down right now, but it indicates deep, ripe, refined and elegant fruit on the nose that keeps the flinty terroir aromas alive and doesn't dominate the bouquet. Rich and with a velvety texture, the 2015 reflects the warm year as well as the terroir that keeps the freshness and mineral vitality even in dry and sunny vintages like this. The finish is powerful and intense, very long but pure, fresh and salty as well. I'd keep the wine for another 2 or 3 years, but I suppose you can serve it for a decade. The finish shows such good concentration, tight structure and mineral tension. The tannins, by the way, are legion, but they are fine and polymerizing with body and texture. A great Swiss Pinot indeed, which I terribly underrated on a very hot August day in 2017, but I am happily generous (but fair) with the 2015 today. Tasted in January 2019.

    The 2016 Jenins Pinot Noir Sélection Barrique (for details see the review of the 2017) offers an intense, warm and concentrated nose of ripe cherries, stewed strawberries and nougat and indicates a remarkable richness, elegance and harmony. The attack on the palate is generous and intense, but the wine remains elegant and fine, with vital tannins and a persistent mineral acidity and complexity. The long finish is compact, salty and powerful. This is a promising Pinot that was picked with tiny yields of just 400 grams per vine. It's more intense and fleshier than the refreshing and transparent 2017 but sweeter and more charming than the great 2015. In any case, the 2016 needs more time to show off. Bottled in March 2018; tasted in January 2019.

    From deep soils, the 2016 Auvernier Pinot Noir displays a deep, very fine, pure and spicy bouquet of perfectly ripe dark fruits, crunchy cherry skins, cassis and even red berries with a kiss of mint and ivy notes. Silky, lush and elegant on the palate, with very fine tannins and delicate acidity, this is a full-bodied, intense and generous Pinot with firm tannins and concentrated dark fruit on the finish. This is still young and a bit austere, but the Auvernier most probably has greater aging potential and certainly more generosity than the Hauterive. It is a deep, dense and powerful Pinot without any hints of sweetness, charm or nougat. It's simply Pinot Noir at its best, and it's damned tight and salty as well as concentrated on the finish. A great Swiss Pinot indeed, though I will probably always prefer the mineral grip and tension of the Hauterive to the generosity of the Auvernier, which is the more famous wine of the two.     The 2011 Nit De Nin is from a single vineyard, Mas d#en Cacador, a steep, north-facing vineyard in the village of Porrera on slate soils where vines are very old # all over 70 years of age. Yields in this vineyard were six hectoliters per hectare. The blend is 60% Garnacha, 40% Carinena, full-cluster fermented in demi-muids and aged for 10 months in barrel and eight months in foudre. It is very aromatic, flowery and mineral, reminiscent of a great Barolo, tar and roses, with telluric, earthy notes of peat and graphite intermixed with aromas of red, black and blue fruit. There#s more concentration and depth than in the Planetes, but equally great acidity that gives freshness and makes it very drinkable. It#s a savory, umami-driven wine, big, but it does not shout, it whispers, and you have to listen to it. A great effort for a very difficult vintage that could be drunk now or aged for a long time.     About ten producers make wine in the Valmaggiore cru in Roero (many of whom are reviewed here), and these wines get better each year I return to taste them. The 2016 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is particularly beautiful, thanks to ideal growing conditions during that year. The Sandrone family counts 3.5 hectares in this location. As an alternative to Barolo, this wine presents a soft and graceful side of Nebbiolo with delicate fruit nuances and distinct mineral etchings. Indeed, the wine is almost salty in taste. The sandy soils of Valmaggiore contribute to shaping the wine's lively ruby appearance and those tangy wild berry aromas. This wine is only aged in neutral oak.

    With scorching heat and little rain overall, there was reason for worry during the 2017 growing season at large, but in the Roero zone by the banks of the Tanaro river, the hilly Valmaggiore vineyards received more rain than other parts of Piedmont, so these grapes did not suffer as much. Lovely notes of red rose and some herbal tones appear on the nose of the 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore, coupled with balsam, spice and rosemary. It's voluminous in the mouth, and while the Le Vigne Barolo tends to be the most floral and delicately ethereal of Sandrone's release, this bouquet is distinctive in its own way. It would be a nice pair with a mushroom risotto.

    Released six years after the harvest, the 2013 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is theoretically considered a new wine, although in practice this expression of Nebbiolo is part of the Sibi Paucis series of late releases from this estate. It is a beautiful expression that you appreciate more in the mouth than you do on the nose. Silky and elegant, the tannins have been softly integrated, and the overall effect is beautifully tempered and graceful. Its very apparent mineral sensations and budding tertiary complexity make it an important wine even when stacked against the other lofty achievements of Luciano Sandrone.

    There are now new wines from Villabuena de Álava, so the 2017 NAHI Blanco has been joined by a red with the same name. It has volume and more clout and depth and keeps very good freshness. She tries to keep the oak to a minimum to keep the fruit and the origin. This 2017 feels a little shy and has a smoky touch, with floral notes and some citrus aromas and flavors, and it only has a sweet-ish touch on the finish. It's mostly Viura but has other white grapes, such as Malvasía Riojana and other old varieties like Calagraño and Rojal. It comes from five small plots, and they only produce 600 bottles, so yields were extremely low. It takes some time to take off in the glass, but it finally develops beautiful aromatics, including some mineral/diesel-like tones, which might give us an idea of how slowly the wine is going to develop in bottle. The vineyards are in the process of being recovered, so the volume might increase in the following years.

    From 30-year-old vines, fermented for one year in small barrels and aged for another six months in stainless steel (without the addition of sulfur), the 2013 Morillon Zieregg was bottled unfiltered in July 2015; it opens pure and mineral on the nose, and reflects its great shell limestone terroir in 450 meters altitude, with floral and lemon aromas. Compared to the corresponding Zieregg Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), this Morillon (Chardonnay) seems leaner and straighter, but is very intense and compact, well structured and powerful. The finish is long and grippy, a bit austere, but full of tension and potential. There is a great finesse and salivating salinity in this wine that is surely on the quality level of the Zieregg Sauvignons. Keep this "Grosse STK Lage" cru for another five to 15 years and don't miss to try it.

    The golden-yewllow colored 2015 Zieregg Morillon comes from Muschelkalk soils with a thicker layer of brown soil. The wine opens with a clear, intense and aromatic bouquet of perfectly ripe, yellow-fleshed fruits intermixed with crushed rocks and lemon juice. Round and very elegant on the palate, this is a rich, full-bodied and juicy Zieregg with a mouthful of fruit, fine acidity, firm tannins and a lingering finish. It is still a bit hard and tannic in the finish, but this will soften over the time. The wine is succulent, powerful and big and needs this structure. It has more flesh on the bones compared to the more mineral and pure Weissburgunder form the very stony part of the Zieregg. Tasted at the domaine in May 2017.

    The 2016 Ried Zieregg Morillon is from the oldest, southwest-facing part of the cru and was planted by Manfred Tement in the early 1980s on coral limestone. Today the vineyard is so well balanced that the yields are almost never reduced and the grapes are picked in just a single day. In 2016, the loss due to frost was "just" 50% (compared to 85% in Sulz), and the grapes came only from the very first shoots, which resulted in a long vegetation period. The 2016 includes one barrel of Pinot Blanc (10%) and opens pure, fine and fresh on the nose, with beautiful chalky notes and perfectly ripe fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a pure, vital and tensioned wine with great elegance, grip and lots of (almost peppery) spices and fine tannins. Very elegant and fresh on the palate, with piquant acidity and a crispy phenol structure, this is a full-bodied and persistent Chardonnay of remarkable elegance and powerful juiciness. The tannins are fine but grippy, and the aftertaste is chalky, aromatic and very long. I tasted this wine in May 2017 from a bottle that was filled the same day (LO 80517), whereas two-thirds of the production still remains in stainless steel.

    This wine is drinking beautifully right now. The 2012 Mille e Una Notte is a lot of fun to drink. You are treated to balanced aromas of black fruit and plum that are contrasted against spice, licorice and smoke. Nero d'Avola tends to show aromas of black olive, caper and aniseed in its natural state. You get some of those aromas here, but the black fruit is ultimately what shows strongest. This full-bodied red is endowed with rich texture and solid structure. It should continue to evolve over the next 10 years.

Tangy leather and spice add complexity to the wine. This is a full-bodied red with beautiful textual richness.

    The 2014 Mille e Una Notte is mostly Nero d'Avola with some other red grapes in a supporting role. This was a terrific vintage in Sicily that did not see the below average temperatures and heavy rainfall that plagued the rest of mainland Italy. Instead, the growing season was characterized by balanced temperatures and steady sunshine. The fruit has matured beautifully here, showing blackberry, ripe cherry and plum. Tangy leather and spice add complexity to the wine. This is a full-bodied red with beautiful textual richness.

    There is a nice freshness to the 2015 Malvasia, with loads of ripe fruit and peach and honey, delivered with great balance and intensity. The mouthful is a little lean, but it also shows a peachy softness. This wine doesn't offer sweetness so much as a fully loaded fragrance. The wine sees 12 months in barrique. Accompany it with grilled prawns marinated in Worcestershire, black pepper, honey, orange juice and a half cup of this wine.

    The other single-vineyard Tempranillo is the 2011 Malleolus de Sancho Martín, always the more backward of the two. It is sourced from a small (0.84-hectare) single plot of vines planted in 1964 on chalk soils that provide more austere wines. It went through malo in French barriques, better suited for wines from chalky soils. Like the rest of the top of the range, it matured in French oak barrels for some 18 months before bottling. Although it feels a little reticent, it slowly develops notes of minerals, red and black fruit, spices and nicely integrated oak. The palate also shows good integration, balance and elegance, with chalky tannins that are very fine and a finish where the oak-related flavors are intermixed with subtle minerality, giving it a little salty sensation. It will be much better with some time in bottle. Only 2,500 bottles produced.

    The 2014 Malleolus de Sancho Martín is always the more backward of the two single-vineyard bottlings. It is sourced from a small (0.84-hectare) single plot of vines planted in 1964 on chalky soils that provide more austere wines. It fermented with yeasts selected from that same vineyard and it went through malolactic in French barriques, better suited for wines from chalky soils. Like the rest of the top of the range, it matured in French oak barrels for some 18 months before bottling. The limestone soils provide for a more austere profile and it also seems like the wine takes the oak in a different way and feels better integrated. The palate has the chalky mouthfeel of the tannins, dry and serious, not as exuberant as the Valderramiro, but more focused and precise, with a long life ahead of it.

    The 2016 Malleolus is a generous old-vine Tempranillo fermented with yeasts they have selected and aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, showcasing the ripe and deftly oaked style of the house. There is more freshness and better balance here compared with 2015; it's juicy, a little chewy and with fine-grained, abundant tannins. There is contained ripeness and moderate acidity. As with many of the wines here, I felt it could do with a little more acidity.

    Carmelo Bonetta is a Sicilian renegade. His radiant personality doesn't just fill a room: It fills a stadium. It is always a pleasure to recognize that exuberance and good cheer in the wines of Baglio del Cristo di Campobello. The 2013 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Lu Patri is a dark and rich red wine with pretty concentration and loads of dark blackberry, cherry and plum. Those generous fruit tones are matched by oaky flavors of vanilla and exotic spice. There's a bit of red earth and dark mineral in there as well. The wine is soft and velvety in texture.
