    Made with the elusive Caberlot grape, the 2015 Il Caberlot (with only 3 ,100 Magnums produced) is a beautifully ripe, dense and rich expression from one of the most beautiful spots in Tuscany. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel and undergo malolactic fermentation in barrique, before a 22-month aging period in small French oak (of which 75% is new). The wine is impeccably balanced and concentrated with dark, plummy fruit, spice, tar and savory tobacco. Caberlot is a distant relative of Cabernet, and you can tell as much as you contemplate the bouquet and full-bodied appearance of the mouthfeel of this warm vintage Tuscan red.

    The 2016 Il Caberlot is a dark, spicy and intense wine that pricks the tongue with its freshness and its thickly concentrated fruit. The bouquet peels back with thick layers of blackberry, spice, leather and campfire ash. Those aromatic elements are all extreme, but they ultimately fit together with extreme precision. The wine offers just a hint of the pyridine, or green aromas you might expect of Cabernet Sauvignon, with plenty of the darkness and dimension you get with well-managed fruit harvested at optimal ripeness. The wine is fermented in steel and then aged in barrique (of which 80% are new) for 22 months.

The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured 50/50 in 600-liter demi-muids and 225-liter barriques for one year. The wine is surprisingly fresh, expressive and aromatic and has a touch of black pepper, perhaps because there are more grapes from higher-altitude vineyards that didn't suffer the frost, and the result might be fresher than some wines from 2016 or 2015. The move to bigger barrels and less oak seems to have paid back with much better integration of the wood and additional nuance. A great effort for the vintage and a bit of a surprise#lighter and less concentrated but more drinkable. 9,000 bottles were filled in November 2018.

    The white has the same name as the entry-level red, and I tasted the 2017 Horizonte de Exopto Blanco. For the white, they have added the grapes from one more plot in the village of Ábalos that's planted exclusively with white grapes (the rest are planted with a majority of red and only individual white vines), and production has grown to 6,000 bottles. Produced in a slightly oxidative way, it's mostly Viura and 10% each Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, fermented together in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and finished in barriques. The élevage was in used 225-liter barrels (60% of the volume), concrete eggs (25% and used for the first time) and French oak demi-muids (the remaining 15%) and lasted 12 months. The new thing is the addition of the concrete egg, which seems to have added freshness, tension and aromatic complexity.     The second vintage of the top-of-the-range single-vineyard Tempranillo is the 2015 Horcajo, which reached 15% alcohol in a warm and dry year like 2015. It went through malolactic in barrique and matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. This is the most powerful and concentrated of their wines; it's quite dark and has aromas of dark fruit, roasted coffee and toast with an earthy touch and a hint of smoke. The palate is full bodied, round and lush, with decadent flavors, baroque, with lush fruit and generous oak in a very showy style.

    Picked on September 28, Ott's 2017 Grüner Veltliner Ried Feuersbrunner Spiegel 1ÖTW is very clear, subtle and elegant on the distinctive nose. In early September 2018, the nose displayed white stone fruits intertwined with refreshing, refining gravelly and floral notes. Later that month, the wine showed tropical notes on the intensely fruity, elegant, sexy nose. Full-bodied, rich and dense on the palate, with intense, lush, concentrated fruit and vitalizing, fine acidity, this is a very persistent and powerful Veltliner with a very long, forward, mineral and tensioned finish. This is a powerful but elegant giant and needs time to gain finesse and transparency. The elegance here, however, is remarkable. Tasted twice in early and late September 2018.

    The 2016 Ried Steinertal Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is from the coolest Grüner Veltliner single vineyard of the Pichler family, with sandy gneiss and granite soils. The 2016 opens with a clear and fresh but also intense fruit aroma that is still a bit discreet on the nose. The attack on the palate is really fresh and piquant due to remarkable acidity. The wine is pure and mineral, shows a good phenolic grip and reveals white fruit aromas like yellow-skinned apples. The finish is clear, fresh and grippy and shows some attractive crispy fruit flavors. This is a lean, elegant, well balanced, medium to full-bodied Grüner Veltliner with less than 13% alcohol. Tasted as a sample in early July 2017. Scheduled for bottling in late July 2017.

It is a generous and rather smooth Veltliner compared to the fresh and finessed Steinertal or the firmly structured Liebenberg. Its finish is long, intense and powerful and reveals tropical fruit aromas. Tasted in July 2017, one week after the bottling.

Sourced in the Kellerberg, Loibenberg Liebenberg and the terraced western part of the Kollmütz, this is a lush and rich, very intense yet elegant Veltliner with lots of power but also remarkable finesse and lingering salinity on the finish. Drinking this wine young is ridiculous and a waste of its talents and potential greatness. Although I don't know where the wine going from here I suppose it will develop very well over the next 10 years. The 2018, unlike the other Smaragd vines, was destemmed, macerated for up to 24 hours and 50% fermented in large (25 hectoliter) oak vats, and the lees were stirred once per month. Bottled in August 2019 and tasted at the domain in September.

Full-bodied, rich and powerful on the palate, this is a generous but elegant and mineral Ehrenfels with fine tannins. The finish is long and aromatic, well structured, stimulating, fresh and salty, revealing mango flavors. This 2016 could become a gorgeous wine one day but the primary fruit aromas are still prominent and similar to Pellingen, whereas on the palate the Ehrenfels is deeper, more powerful in its structure and persistence. This exceptional terroir dominates the variety but not the fruit, which seems to be a concession to the Austrian taste which is pretty new for this formerly uncompromising domain.     Picked over two weeks between the middle of September and early October, the 2017 Ried Loiserberg Grüner Veltliner is ripe and spicy on the white fruit-dominated nose. This is a picture-book Grüner Veltliner from the Kamptal#what lovely ripe pear aromas intertwined with herbal, even floral and stony aromas! Lush and round on the palate, this is a terribly juicy-piquant, pure, fresh and stimulating Veltliner with all the sexiness this grape can deliver. The wine has piquant and refreshing mineral acidly, fine grip and good length. Not utterly complex but perfect to have with or without food. Great purity and authenticity. Gruüner at its best!     Tasted from the vat two weeks before bottling in late June 2017, the 2016 Kamptal Grüner Veltliner Renner 1ÖTW shows a pure, fresh and bright bouquet of white fruits along with some lemon flavors. The wine is intense and fresh in its mineral purity, very well structured and develops a fruity and stimulatingly salty finish. The acidity is remarkably fresh. The Renner comes from the bottom of the western part of the Kammerner Gaisberg where the vines root in calcareous silt soils and can age for 8 years or more.

    A few years after releasing the centenary Carignan wine, they decided to bottle a 2015 1903 Centenary Grenache, with a similar approach and philosophy. The grapes are sourced from their oldest family vineyards in the village of Poboleda, basically from two vineyards where they have both Garnacha and Cariñena; but they were picked, fermented and aged separately. The 2015 vintage is not an easy one, perhaps a little too dry and ripe for Garnacha but better for Cariñena; the wine shows high ripeness and is a bit jammy on the nose, with better balance in the palate, where it shows good balance and freshness. It's a bit of a heady Garnacha, an intoxicating wine, showy, open, expressive and impressive. The destemmed grapes fermented in stainless steel, and the wine matured in new and used 225- and 500-liter barrels to complete some 16 months of aging. 600 bottles were filled in May 2017.     From a single parcel in Urville, the 2008 Brut Grande Sendrée is exceptional, opening in the glass with incipiently rich aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, brioche, marzipan and wheat toast that seems to be on the cusp of acquiring more nutty complexity. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and tight-knit, with superb concentration and structural tension, built around racy acids and concluding with an attractively chalky finish. In keeping with the vintage, this is quite a tensile, reserved Grande Sendrée, but its potential is considerable. Readers should plan on forgetting the 2008 for another four or five years if they wish to catch it at the beginning of its plenitude. It's a blend of 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay, one-third of which was fermented in barrel; it was disgorged after seven years sur lattes with five grams per liter dosage.

    The 2004 Tinto Gloria Reynolds -Cathedral is an equal blend of Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet, aged in new French oak for 24 months. This is simply the old Gloria Reynolds Tinto with a new name, Cathedral only indicating a re-release program. Julian Cuellar Reynolds said: Gloria Cathedral 2004 is an old harvest, the lot of every Gloria that I keep in the cellar for a second release after 12 years. I was not sold on this originally, but it is very impressive now that it is mature-and that maturity is the key to success here.     The 2009 Gloria Reynolds Art & Tradition Tinto is an equal blend of Alicante Bouschet and Trincadeira, aged for 24 months in new French oak. It comes in at 14% alcohol. Far more burly and muscular than the 2011 Grande Reserva this issue#even with two extra years of bottle age-this is the one where the winery goes for a statement and let's it all hang out. Yet, with the late release, this has come to a place where it is at least drinkable now, if still a bit tight. Long on the finish, with the beefy nuances of the Alicante dominating the wine, this also has surprising freshness, some acidity that lifts the fruit. In this big and very warm year, this seems impressive for its success in maintaining its balance. At the same time, it adds a layer of depth and power to the Grande Reserva.
