Brancaia usually adds a little Merlot (20%) to this wine to soften and flesh out the crisp tightness that comes from Sangiovese. The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva is a beautiful wine that plays its best cards in terms of mouthfeel. The bouquet is beautiful as well, with dark fruit nuances that are layered tight. You get wild cherries and red rose petal in generous supply. The mouthfeel is light to medium in texture, but it shows more smoothness and silkiness compared to many of its peers.

A spicy Chianti Classico Riserva showing dried red plums, dried roses, mahogany, forest floor, cedar, white truffles, wet earth and leather. But it#s all so fresh and delightful. The palate#s so focused and refined as the firm, wonderfully savory tannins dance between layers of dried fruit, which remains so pure due to the wealth of punchy acidity. Hints of orange rind on the long finish. Like a baby Brunello. Drink in 2024.

The 2012 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Mocenni 89 (100% Sangiovese) is a nicely compact and well-constructed wine with thick textural richness and lots of fruity fiber at its core. This is a delicious wine - and a slightly offbeat expression within this Tuscan appellation - that delivers generous tones of smoky, dark fruit and crushed mineral. This wine should flesh out and evolve over the next ten years. Only 5,000 bottles were produced.

Tough, rustic, chewy tannins overshadow black cherry and blackberry fruit notes in this muscular red, which is concentrated but not out of bounds. Earth, tea and spice notes emerge in the aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2030.

The 2014 Chianti Classico is a beautiful wine with sharp focus and brightness. The wine is loaded with energy and verve. Despite the negative comments you hear about this vintage, this wine demonstrates that hard work and careful fruit selection can make the difference. This base Chianti Classico is composed of 100% Sangiovese. Brancaia is best known for its excellent results with international grape varieties, but they have no problem making first-rate Sangiovese as well.

According to Laurence Féraud, the 2014 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee was bottled in November 2016. It's already drinking well, with charming aromas of potpourri leading the way. It's medium to full-bodied, rounded out by just enough cherry fruit, then drawing to a spicy, leather-and-silk finish. Féraud calls it her little Burgundy.

Light, hazy yellow. Explosive, mineral-driven aromas of fresh pear, peach pit and white flowers carry a gingery background note. Stony, focused and pure on the palate, offering intense orchard fruit and citrus fruit flavors that become weightier with air. Clings with strong tenacity on the finish, which shows excellent clarity and a resonating floral note.

Now that it has been in bottle a while, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is looking even better than I projected based on last year's prebottling sample. It's all violets, cherries, subtle allspice and clove and traditional garrigue notes of lavender and thyme. Full-bodied and rich, it's crazy complex, adding hints of tar and black olives on the long, silky finish. It should evolve beautifully over the next two decades.

Vivid ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe raspberry, cherry and garrigue, while a suave floral element expands with air. Fleshy, seamless and broad on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and fruitcake flavors that are braced and lifted by a spine of juicy acidity. The floral note builds as the wine opens up and carries through the sweet, strikingly long finish, which leaves behind red fruit liqueur and licorice notes.

A new special cuvée introduced in 2014, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée A Tempo Blanc is an even split of Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, all from the Mont Pertuis lieu-dit, that was aged in a mix of very old barrels and stainless steel. There#s a scant 100 cases produced and it has terrific, saliva-inducing minerality as well as ample citrus blossom, white peach, mint and a sea breeze-like saltiness. Tight, focused, medium to full-bodied and with impressive density, it needs 6-12 months of bottle age, and I suspect will keep for over a decade.

Brilliant straw. A powerful, expansive bouquet evokes mineral-accented Meyer lemon, pear, iodine and jasmine. Sappy citrus and orchard fruit flavors stain the palate and display a suave blend of richness and vivacity, with no undue weight. Juicy, taut and strikingly concentrated, displaying the tension of a Grand Cru Chablis. Finishes minerally, floral and extremely long, conveying a repeating floral quality. This should turn out to be a stunning wine, by any measure, and as white Châteauneuf goes, it'll be monumental.

Transparent yellow-gold. An impressively complex, mineral-accented bouquet displays aromas of ripe citrus and orchard fruits, nori, buttered toast and jasmine, and a hint of anise sneaks in as the wine opens up. At once deep and lithe on the palate, offering vibrant Meyer lemon, pear, gingerbread and fennel flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Displays superb tension and thrust on a mineral- and floral-driven finish that refuses to let up. I'd have absolutely no problem lining up this remarkable wine alongside a group of high-end Grand Cru white Burgundies from that region's biggest names.

It boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as full-bodied richness, sweet tannin and textbook Southern Rhône notes of cured meats, toasted spice, garrigue and ample red and black fruits. Leading off the Châteauneuf du Papes and made from younger vines, with the goal to drink well in its youth, the Grenache-dominated 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape La Belle Voyageuse (there's 4% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, with a tiny splash of Counoise and Vaccarèse) sports a vibrant ruby/purple color as well as lively notes of raspberries, bouquet garni, spice box, dried soil and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, supple and elegant on the palate, it's a much more upfront, mid-weight effort compared to the more concentrated, structured Reine des Bois cuvée. It should drink nicely on release and over the following decade.

The 2016 Friuli Isonzo Rive Alte Chardonnay Vie di Romans is exotic and tangy, just slightly ripe and absolutely beautiful. The notes of exotic fruit and papaya are almost incomparable in definition, with some sweet cinnamon mingling in there as well. Vinified in used pièces, the 2017 Malanser Chardonnay is clear, bright and fresh on the rather lean, reductive and fruity nose that reveals crystalline mineral expressions. Firm, intense and piquant on the palate, this is an intense and powerful but elegant and racy Chardonnay from the Selvenen. It did not undergo malolactic fermentation and comes along pretty racy and piquant but not as quiet as the Gantenbein Chardonnay. Fresh. Tasted November 2018.

A bright and transparent garnet-ruby color dresses the 2014 Thalheim Chalofe Pinot Noir, which is selected from 20- to 45-year-old vines on marl soils. Aged in barriques for 12 months and another six months in stainless steel, the wine opens with a very clear, pure, fresh and reductive bouquet that reminds me of a white Burgundy-though the fruit flavors have a rather red-skinned origin. Silky textured, very pure and fresh, this is a very delicate and finessed Pinot with a silky texture and a filigreed structure. The finish, however, shows tension, firm yet highly fine tannins, as well as the salty purity and refreshing elegance of a Chablis or even Riesling. An amazing wine!

There is real delineation and poise here, with walnut and smoke emerging with time and struck flint emerging later. The palate is well defined with a fine bead of acidity (although the acidity level is lower than in Blanchot). Touches of blackcurrant leaf and quince dovetail into a very energetic finish that lingers for over a minute. Superb.

It has a clean and precise bouquet that needs more coaxing than the more forward Les Fourneaux, with touches of hazelnut and smoke emerging with time. Samuel Billaud commented he has found that this particular cuvée has become more saline and minerally in barrel. It has a very complex bouquet with scents of wet limestone, yellow plum and a touch of white peach. The palate is fresh on the entry with a touch of orange rind, steely and linear; it is strict for a Vaillons, with a precise and stony finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. It has great concentration, but at the same time, the wine has higher acidity, which makes it very balanced. It aged sur lie for 56 months before it was disgorged. The red grapes were fermented like whites (without skins), and because they liked what it added to the wine, they repeated it in 2016 but not in 2017 and 2018. This is fresh, mineral and austere and very remarkable for the style of the vintage. Like the rest of the range, it's bone-dry and very long and tasty. It feels more like a wine from a cool vintage than a warm one. Very complete. 148,000 bottles produced.

Poboleda is in the northeast of the appellation, in the Siurana Valley at the foot of the Montsant Mountains, which provides a cooler microclimate with more rain, a longer cycle and later ripening than the southern part of Priorat. 2014 was a mild year complicated by rains in September, which required sorting grapes. This resulted in a 2014 1902 Centenary Carignan with half a point less alcohol than the cool 2013. This 2014 feels exactly like something in between the 2013 and 2015 vintages#with the freshness and tension of 2013 and the power and ripeness closer to 2015. It has a good compromise between power and elegance; it's concentrated but with tension and freshness, lots of tannins but not astringent. A very concentrated but harmonious Cariñena, one of the best in Priorat. Only 864 bottles were filled unfined and unfiltered in April 2016 after 16 months in new French oak barrels.

96/100 Punkte Robert Parker, April 2018
2015 saw a return to dry and warm years like 2012, and the 2015 1902 Centenary Carignan was saved from the heat wave in July by 60 liters of rain in June. The destemmed grapes fermented with neutral yeasts in stainless steel, and the wine matured in three brand new French oak barrels for 16 months. The technical data lists almost seven grams of residual sugar, which surprised me. It's ripe, full-bodied and powerful, concentrated and juicy. It's a very powerful and heady Cariñena, with a polished texture. It feels tender and young. 864 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2017. I had the chance to taste a bottle of the never-released 2005, an experimental vintage from a year that could have some similarities with 2015, and the wine felt very balanced and still young, not showing any heat.

The single-vineyard red 2016 Camino de Santa Cruz is a wine she wanted to call Rivas de Tereso, but she was not allowed, so she named it after the plot where the grapes grow. It's an aromatic red with intense aromas of violets and the hallmark signature of 2016, and has a surplus of minerality because of the high limestone content of the soils, with some Mediterranean undertones. With time in the glass, it reveals some classical Rioja notes of forest floor, truffle and mushrooms. It fermented in 300-liter amphorae and matured in well-seasoned, neutral 500-liter oak barrels for 12 months. The medium-bodied palate is elegant, and the tannins are round and make it very pleasant and approachable.

The 2016 Alto Adige Cabernet Riserva Mumelter is very true to the variety (and the cool, mountainous climate of Alto Adige) with greenish aromas of peppercorn, forest floor, wild herb and dark plummy fruit. This is a full-bodied expression to pair with hearty winter dishes served at ski lodges and alpine resorts with a roaring fire. Smoke, tar and licorice add more volume and complexity to the bouquet. This wine will appeal to those who like tightly focused and sharp expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon (with a tiny part Cabernet Franc).

The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Corte Pavone is made according to an organic and biodynamic growing philosophy, yet the wine boasts a contemporary style that is immediate and appealing. The bouquet delivers soft and approachable aromas of dark cherry, blackberry confit, pipe tobacco, toasted espresso bean and even a touch of bitter chocolate. This Brunello offers more density to chew on, but there is also firm tannic structure at the back that keeps it from feeling too fleshy.

Deep, dark and sophisticated, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Corte Pavone is a solid buy from this vintage. The wine opens to an inky dark appearance and a deep garnet color. The aromas span over to black fruit, oak spice, tobacco and espresso. They definitely represent the more contemporary side of the Sangiovese bouquet. There is good textural firmness and volume here to glue all those strong flavors tightly together.

This is the inaugural release of a new single-vineyard wine from Loacker's Corte Pavone estate in Tuscany. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Corte Pavone Fiore del Vento (with only 1,800 bottles made) is a thickly endowed expression of Brunello that excels both in terms of bouquet and mouthfeel texture. This is a beautifully expressive wine in terms of aromas, with dark fruit, ripe cherry, blackberry, toasted almond, balsam herb and crushed mineral. You get the full Brunello package here, albeit on the modern and contemporary side of the style spectrum. Similar intensity and generosity are imparted to the palate, where the wine performs with balanced power and elegance. The wine could age, but it also drinks well straight out of the gate.

Loacker's 2014 Brunello di Montalcino Corte Pavone is an open and immediate wine that makes a good first impression. The wine delivers a savory side that is most apparent on first nose. It is composed of leather, spice and even a touch of smoked meat. Dark fruit remains at the core. Like the other wines from this vintage, the mouthfeel is on the short side, but the generosity of the bouquet does much to compensate this fact. In this difficult vintage, bottle production is only 5,000 strong.

The 2015 Chianti Classico Brolio is made with 80% Sangiovese that has been enhanced by 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine ages in barrique and tonneaux for up to nine months. This is a bright and fruit-forward wine that imparts aromas of plump cherry and cassis. With 730,000 bottles made, this is a good value option that should be relatively easy to locate at your nearest wine merchant.

The 2016 Chianti Classico Brolio is a very pretty wine. Perfumed floral notes and silky tannins complement the bright, red-tone fruit nicely in this pretty, expressive mid-weight Chianti Classico. The freshness speaks to the personality of the year. This is very nicely done.
