The NV Arpège Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru is 100% Chardonnay based on 2010 (62%) and 2011 (38%), tirage in March 2012 and disgorgement in January 2015 with 4.5 grams of dosage. There is pure chalk and freshness on the nose, with white and intense fruit, as well as a yeasty Jura-like character. On the palate, this is a very complex and highly mineral Champagne with great purity, finesse, elegance and character. There is a lot of mineral grip and great complexity.

The NV Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Arpège is a gorgeous, sculpted Champagne built on precision. Crushed rocks, slate, green pears and citrus jump from the glass as this vibrant Champagne shows off its tense, pulsating personality. This is a gorgeous Champagne from Pascal Doquet. The Arpège is a blend of 2010 (19%), 2009 (50%) and 2008 (31%). Disgorged February 7, 2014. Dosage is 4 grams per liter.

The 2015 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros has a splendid bouquet with a very subtle reductive note. There is real delineation and poise here, with walnut and smoke emerging with time and struck flint emerging later. The palate is well defined with a fine bead of acidity (although the acidity level is lower than in Blanchot). Touches of blackcurrant leaf and quince dovetail into a very energetic finish that lingers for over a minute. Superb.

Billaud's 2017 Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot was another wine cropped at very low yields, around 20 hectoliters per hectare in this case. Offering up a pretty bouquet of citrus blossom, peaches and pears that's subtly framed by a discrete touch of oak, it's full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a broad attack, a fleshy core and a precise but delicately exotic finish.

Powerful and explosive, with tons of underlying saline energy, the Blanchot is a mind-bendingly beautiful Chablis endowed with tons of character. Exotic floral notes add striking shades of nuance, but it is the wholeness of the Blanchot that stands out most.

Billaud produced a mere 450 liters of the 2017 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros, a full-bodied, fleshy wine that's deep and concentrated, redolent of honeycomb, orange rind and vanilla pod. Despite its broad shoulders, it's racy and precise and concludes with a saline finish, but it won't be easy to find.

The 2017 Chablis Bougros Grand Cru is a terrific example of just how compelling this vintage is at the top end. Weightless and classically austere, the Bougros offers so much intensity, but in the understated manner that is so typical of first-rate Chablis. Soaring citrus, floral and mineral-infused aromatics add to the wine's sheer appeal. Aging in larger format oak really helps the wine preserve freshness.

The 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape is a classic blend of 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault, mostly from rolled stone terroirs, that was partially destemmed and will see 15 months all in foudre. It boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as full-bodied richness, sweet tannin and textbook Southern Rhône notes of cured meats, toasted spice, garrigue and ample red and black fruits. It will have two decades or more of prime drinking.

A new special cuvée introduced in 2014, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée A Tempo Blanc is an even split of Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, all from the Mont Pertuis lieu-dit, that was aged in a mix of very old barrels and stainless steel. There#s a scant 100 cases produced and it has terrific, saliva-inducing minerality as well as ample citrus blossom, white peach, mint and a sea breeze-like saltiness. Tight, focused, medium to full-bodied and with impressive density, it needs 6-12 months of bottle age, and I suspect will keep for over a decade.

From a single parcel in Urville, the 2008 Brut Grande Sendrée is exceptional, opening in the glass with incipiently rich aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, brioche, marzipan and wheat toast that seems to be on the cusp of acquiring more nutty complexity. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and tight-knit, with superb concentration and structural tension, built around racy acids and concluding with an attractively chalky finish. In keeping with the vintage, this is quite a tensile, reserved Grande Sendrée, but its potential is considerable. Readers should plan on forgetting the 2008 for another four or five years if they wish to catch it at the beginning of its plenitude. It's a blend of 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay, one-third of which was fermented in barrel; it was disgorged after seven years sur lattes with five grams per liter dosage.

From chalk and silex soils, the golden-yellow colored 2006 Le Mont Aimé Premier Cru Coeur de Terroir has a very particular bouquet for the Côte des Blancs and needs a while to get rid of its rather reductive style (36% was fermented in small oak barrels). Concentrated citrus flavors evolve after a while in the glass. This could also be a ripe and flinty Chablis with bubbles. On the palate, this is a beautifully elegant, refined and rather crystalline Champagne, and its linear elegance is pretty unique. The finish is pure, salty and rather piquant but ripe. This is a fascinating wine that I perhaps slightly underrated in my review from two years ago (in Issue #225). This sample was disgorged in July 2017, about 2.5 years after the one I tasted in early 2016 for my previous review. The dosage is 3.5 grams per liter. Full medium yellow. Exotic lift to the perfumed, highly expressive aromas of pèche de vigne, nectarine, honeysuckle, acacia flower and wild herbs. Delivers outstanding intensity, depth and purity of flavor, with underlying minerality providing lift but no austerity. This sharply delineated wine is more about finesse than power. Finishes wonderfully bright, dense and long. This should be long-lived for a 2016 Pouilly-Fuissé.

The 2015 Pouilly Fuisse Vers Cras comes from two hectares of 50-year-old vines that spends 12 months in cask and another four months in vat. It has a fresh and focused bouquet with subtle honeysuckle and beeswax aromas threaded through the citrus fruit. I appreciate the manner in which this unfolds with aeration. The palate is vibrant on the entry with good acidity but then the second half just seems a little simple by comparison. A wine of two halves, the first better than the second, but overall a very sound Pouilly-Fuissé Vers Cras that may well warrant a higher score in the future.

The intensely yellow-colored 2005 Vertus Premier Cru Coeur de Terroir is a partly barrel-fermented (malolactic included) Chardonnay from the best parts of Vertus. Disgorged in April 2015 with five grams of dosage, this is a rich, round and full-bodied cuvée with great finesse and elegance. Chalky textured, the finish is pure, fresh and salty. The ripe Chardonnay fruit and chalky minerality are really persistent. This is a perfectly balanced and well-structured Vertus cru that is ready to be enjoyed today, but can be cellared for five or more years.

Doquet's 2006 Vertus Premier Cru Coeur de Terroir is a selection from the best and oldest Chardonnay vines in Vertus. Fermented and aged on the lees, 60% in small oak barrels, it was bottled in April 2007 and disgorged as Extra Brut in July 2017 (with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter). This is a highly aromatic, ripe, elegant and pretty sexy 2016 with lovely iodine and very fine (sweet) brioche flavors. Round and perfectly balanced on the palate, this is a rich, elegant, salty, beautifully lush, generous and perfectly balanced Vertus with a pure, fresh and salty finish. Fabulous!

Potent and intense, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape La Dame Voyageuse is a rich, dramatic bottling, the best I've tasted under this label. It's approachable now, but smart money is on it aging well for at least a decade. It's full-bodied and supple, with concentrated blueberry, mulberry and plum fruit, hints of licorice, cola and braised meat and just a dusting of baking spices (10% of the blend aged in oak). Tasted three times, with consistent notes.

According to Laurence Féraud, the 2014 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee was bottled in November 2016. It's already drinking well, with charming aromas of potpourri leading the way. It's medium to full-bodied, rounded out by just enough cherry fruit, then drawing to a spicy, leather-and-silk finish. Féraud calls it her little Burgundy.

Light, hazy yellow. Explosive, mineral-driven aromas of fresh pear, peach pit and white flowers carry a gingery background note. Stony, focused and pure on the palate, offering intense orchard fruit and citrus fruit flavors that become weightier with air. Clings with strong tenacity on the finish, which shows excellent clarity and a resonating floral note.

The 2017 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu confirms its strong showing last year, unwinding in the glass with aromas of peach, grapefruit and honeycomb, with some subtle musky floral tones waiting in the wings that I suspect will become more prominent with time. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and gourmand, with racy acids and a long, saline finish. Billaud tells me that this was cropped at less than 20 hectoliters per hectare, and that shows.

Sourced from five plots in the village, the Chardonnay for the 2006 Le Mesnil sur Oger Grand Cru Coeur de Terroir was entirely vinified in small oak barrels. It was kept on the lees until the bottling in April 2007 and disgorged in July 2017 as Extra Brut (with a dosage of four to five grams per liter). This wine offers a very deep, perfectly ripe, pure, fresh and elegant bouquet of great complexity, featuring ripe fruit aromas that are intertwined with iodine and concentrated citrus notes. Almost steely in the background but overall generous, the 2006 is highly elegant and complex, with a lovely oxidative touch and good structure. Pure, fresh and finessed on the palate, this is a very elegant and balanced yet tensioned grand cru with a long, aromatic, perfectly round and accessible finish. This can be cellared for at least 10 to 15 years if you like matured Champagne. There is a lot of life and vitality in this cuvée. Great finish#fresh

Cropped at a meager 15 hectoliters per hectare, Billaud produced only two barrels of the 2017 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos. Offering up aromas of musky peach, mandarin and green apple, it's full-bodied, deep and textural, with the structure of a red wine on the palate.
