    vinous 94/100

94/100 Punkte Vinous, December 2018 Once again these vines have provided generous fruitiness - here, Riesling-like, glowingly pit-tinged white peach, mirabelle and lime - as well as haunting, bittersweet inner-mouth perfume and deep, mouthwateringly saline, savory richness suggestive of raw scallop. A satiny feel reinforces the impressions of ripeness and marrowy richness conveyed by the flavors. And like this year#s Rotes Tor Federspiel, we have here a tactile sense of active, stony mineral impingement that lends vibrancy to the near-endlessly juicy finish. Despite this wine#s harboring roughly 13.5% alcohol, it evinces a welcome sense of lift. (For more about this site and its vines, consult especially my tasting notes on its vintage 2013 and 2015 installments.)

From 66-year-old vines planted on the gneiss and quartzite soils in the steep Dürnstein cru, the 2017 Ried Höhereck Grüner Veltliner Smaragd displays an intense, fine and elegant nose with delicate citric and flinty-mineral notes. Very fine and elegant on the palate, with intense and well-concentrated fruit and lots of body, this is a rich and powerful but refined and well-balanced Smaragd with lingering piquant minerality. Bottled in June 2018. Tasted in Dürnstein/Wachau, September 2018.

The 2017 Spitz Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Rotes Tor is very delicate and elegant on the nose. Rich, lush and powerful on the palate, this is an intense, firmly structured and persistent yet elegant Veltliner with lots of tension and impressive length. Tasted in Spitz, September 2018.

Quite a powerful dry white, but with wonderful elegance. The balance of mirabelle and fresh-herb aromas and fresh acidity is spot on. Ripe and lively finish. Drink or hold.

A rich, smoky Grüner, luscious and creamy up front, but with underlying acidity that pierces its way through, revealing persimmon, vanilla and cardamom notes. Features a really lovely texture, almost velvety, coating the palate, but still remains fresh. Complex and long. Best from 2020 through 2030.

Fabulous aromas of oolong tea and vanilla bean turn to pineapple, grapefruit and savory mineral detail on the palate in this exquisite Grüner Veltliner. Viscous, yet vibrant, this shows some spice on the finish. Brilliantly harmonious, yet should show even more with some age. Best from 2021 through 2031.

Although this has some exotic-fruit aromas, the nose is also cool and minty. As succulent as it is elegant, this striking grüner veltliner finishes with an impressive mineral crescendo. Drink or hold.

The 2017 Ried Steinertal Riesling Smaragd is intense and flinty on the dark and stony, very flinty and coolish nose with its concentrated white peach and lime aromas. Full-bodied, sharp, super pure and mineral on the palate, this is a full-bodied, tight, fresh and serious wine with a long and tensioned but still terribly young finish. Great complexity and tension! One of the finest Rieslings from the Danube River in 2017. Tasted in Oberloiben/Wachau, September 2018.

Difficult to pick in time, the 2018 Ried Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner Smaragd offers a clear, fresh and flinty, elegant and balanced nose with riper fruit and delicately spicy aromas. Round, lush and intense on the palate, this full-bodied but elegant wine reveals a long and powerful finish that doesn't lose its freshness and elegance. The wine has good structure and phenolic grip but no phenolic or drying bitters. It combines elegance and freshness with power and extraordinarily ripe but still precise fruit. Pichler holds nine parcels in this large vineyard, of which the most are in the central part and in lower areas. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.

    Parker 95/100

95/100 Punkte Robert Parker, March 2020
From the latest harvest pass and the oldest vines, though no botrytis yet highly ripe and overripe grapes, the 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd M is very concentrated and intense but clear and elegant on the slightly flinty nose. Sourced in the Kellerberg, Loibenberg Liebenberg and the terraced western part of the Kollmütz, this is a lush and rich, very intense yet elegant Veltliner with lots of power but also remarkable finesse and lingering salinity on the finish. Drinking this wine young is ridiculous and a waste of its talents and potential greatness. Although I don't know where the wine going from here I suppose it will develop very well over the next 10 years. The 2018, unlike the other Smaragd vines, was destemmed, macerated for up to 24 hours and 50% fermented in large (25 hectoliter) oak vats, and the lees were stirred once per month. Bottled in August 2019 and tasted at the domain in September.

The 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Rotes Tor is entirely based on the fruit from Spitz (the vineyards below the red gate) and opens with a deep, precise and flinty bouquet that shows a coolish-mineral and darker-toned character with rather discreet fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a lush and mouth-filling, very fine and elegant Grüner with a long, intense and refreshing crystalline and salty finish. Excellent grip. From pure, weathered gneiss soils. Ripe, intense and juicy on the palate, this is a more charming, lush and accessible Veltliner compared to the Liebenberg, but the finish has the same vitality, mineral freshness and tension. From the parcels below the Riesling, grown on weathered bedrock (iron-rich gneiss) and benefiting from descending air currents of the creek, the 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Steinertal offers a coolish, fascinating, precise and flinty bouquet of white fruits. Lush and intense on the palate, this is a very intense and mineral but also sensual Veltliner that pleases hedonists as well as intellectuals. The wine has vivacious acidity, remarkable finesse and a long and sustainable finish with a lot of salt and tension. One of the finest Veltliners that has been produced in Lower Austria in 2018.

Picked on September 28, Ott's 2017 Grüner Veltliner Ried Feuersbrunner Spiegel 1ÖTW is very clear, subtle and elegant on the distinctive nose. In early September 2018, the nose displayed white stone fruits intertwined with refreshing, refining gravelly and floral notes. Later that month, the wine showed tropical notes on the intensely fruity, elegant, sexy nose. Full-bodied, rich and dense on the palate, with intense, lush, concentrated fruit and vitalizing, fine acidity, this is a very persistent and powerful Veltliner with a very long, forward, mineral and tensioned finish. This is a powerful but elegant giant and needs time to gain finesse and transparency. The elegance here, however, is remarkable. Tasted twice in early and late September 2018.

Leuchtendes Gelb, Silberreflexe. Zart nussig-reduktiv unterlegte reife gelbe Fruchtnuancen, zart buttrig unterlegte Mangonote, feine Kräuterwürze, einladendes Bukett. Straff, engmaschig, frischer gelber Apfel, lebendig strukturiert, bleibt gut haften, wirkt am Gaumen sehr leichtfüßig, gewürziger Nachhall.

The 2014 Gumpoldskirchen Chardonnay Gumpold opens with an intense butterscotch flavor on the nose as well as a first maturity. On the palate, this is a creamy, elegant, well structured and slightly bitter Gumpoldskirchen Chardonnay with a good, clear and fresh finish. Tasted June 2018.

This is Fattoria di Magliano's flagship wine. The 2015 Morellino di Scansano Heba (95% Sangiovese with 5% Syrah) flows forth with bright cherry and wild berry aromas. This wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in cement vats to preserve the brightness and the integrity of the primary fruit. In this warm vintage, that primary fruit is naturally bold, ripe and dark in color and concentration.

The second vintage of the top-of-the-range single-vineyard Tempranillo is the 2015 Horcajo, which reached 15% alcohol in a warm and dry year like 2015. It went through malolactic in barrique and matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. This is the most powerful and concentrated of their wines; it's quite dark and has aromas of dark fruit, roasted coffee and toast with an earthy touch and a hint of smoke. The palate is full bodied, round and lush, with decadent flavors, baroque, with lush fruit and generous oak in a very showy style.

The white has the same name as the entry-level red, and I tasted the 2017 Horizonte de Exopto Blanco. For the white, they have added the grapes from one more plot in the village of Ábalos that's planted exclusively with white grapes (the rest are planted with a majority of red and only individual white vines), and production has grown to 6,000 bottles. Produced in a slightly oxidative way, it's mostly Viura and 10% each Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, fermented together in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and finished in barriques. The élevage was in used 225-liter barrels (60% of the volume), concrete eggs (25% and used for the first time) and French oak demi-muids (the remaining 15%) and lasted 12 months. The new thing is the addition of the concrete egg, which seems to have added freshness, tension and aromatic complexity. In fact, the wine makes me think of a cool vintage (and it was not), and the wine is fresh and has great ac

The red 2017 Horizonte de Exopto is a traditional blend of Tempranillo with 10% each Garnacha and Graciano, but now not all of grapes come from the village of Ábalos#since 2016, they have added two plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured 50/50 in 600-liter demi-muids and 225-liter barriques for one year. The wine is surprisingly fresh, expressive and aromatic and has a touch of black pepper, perhaps because there are more grapes from higher-altitude vineyards that didn't suffer the frost, and the result might be fresher than some wines from 2016 or 2015. The move to bigger barrels and less oak seems to have paid back with much better integration of the wood and additional nuance. A great effort for the vintage and a bit of a surprise#lighter and less concentrated but more drinkable. 9,000 bottles were filled in November 2018.

This is a beautiful play between fresh blackberries, violets and lavender and dried meat, vanilla and spices. Iodine, licorice and tar all in there, too. Full body, muscular yet grainy tannins and layer after layer of plush fruit, wrapped up neatly in tangy acidity. Drink in 2022.
