    I didn't get the Burgundian nose in the 2016 La Mimbrera that I saw in the 2015. For proprietor and winemaker Tom Puyabert, 2016 is not a truly Atlantic vintage, and this feels somewhat more Mediterranean than the 2015, with notes of rosemary, thyme and even esparto grass, not something I have seen in many other wines from Rioja. The tannins might be amplified by the strong chalky sensation from the high limestone content of the soils, which also impart a special tastiness to the wines. It has a sapid, almost salty finish. There are more tannins, and the wine feels a bit young and in need of some more time in the bottle. 500 bottles were filled in April 2018.

    A varietal Garnacha from Riva de Tereso, the 2017 La Dula comes from a small 80-year-old plot planted in 1944, so production is extremely low. It's bottled unoaked and matured in amphorae to see what the pure grape delivers. It's fruit-driven and shows some ripeness from a warm and dry year. This tends to have very high acidity, so the grapes are picked late to achieve good ripeness. It fermented in tinaja (amphorae), where it's kept for a few months and then is bottled early. There are perfumed notes, and something herbal/wild that I like. The palate reveals fine-grained tannins and clean flavors. Only 670 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018.

    The 2014 La Dama, as with the El Terroir bottling, is produced with Garnacha grapes from vines planted starting in 1903. They told me they consider 2014 a beautiful vintage, healthy and balanced (although the organic and biodynamic vineyards then to be healthy and balanced every vintage!), and a pleasure to vinify. 2014 is a very complete vintage, with ripeness and freshness, elegance and power. This La Dama is a great example of it. They select the wines from stonier vineyards, where the soils are shallower and the mother rock is very close to the surface. These plots tend to produce more austere, mineral and elegant wines, where the chalkiness of the tannins talks about the limestone soils. This has to be among the finest Garnacha produced in Spain. This shows more elegant than any previous years, possibly the best vintage to date. Bravo.

    The 2011 Julian Reynolds Grande Reserva is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouschet, plus 20% Syrah, rather different than last year's. It was aged for 18 months in 70% new French oak and comes in at 14.5% alcohol. At this point in the wine's life - this late release is a current release#this seems refined and velvety with a medley of flavors ranging from beef to lead on the finish. Its balance and its graceful demeanor are probably the best features, especially as it delivers nuanced flavors all the while. It is persistent and long on that flavorful finish. It always seems pure and fresh. This should be a pleasure to drink. There were 13,000 bottles produced.

Perhaps the mouthfeel is a touch thinner and shorter in this vintage (as is to be expected), but given its overall opulence, this is a welcome characteristic.     Podere Il Carnasciale's 2014 Il Caberlot is all class. Sophisticated and medium in body in this vintage, it possesses striking aromatic depth and nuance to match its decidedly midweight personality. Layers of bright, red-toned fruit, blood orange and cinnamon add to the wine's decidedly exotic personality. In some vintages, Caberlot is more overt and exuberant, but the 2014 is a cool, reserved wine that needs time in bottle for its inner sweetness to fully emerge. Even at this early stage, though, it is striking.

The wine is fermented in steel and then aged in barrique (of which 80% are new) for 22 months.

    The red 2017 Horizonte de Exopto is a traditional blend of Tempranillo with 10% each Garnacha and Graciano, but now not all of grapes come from the village of Ábalos#since 2016, they have added two plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured 50/50 in 600-liter demi-muids and 225-liter barriques for one year. The wine is surprisingly fresh, expressive and aromatic and has a touch of black pepper, perhaps because there are more grapes from higher-altitude vineyards that didn't suffer the frost, and the result might be fresher than some wines from 2016 or 2015. The move to bigger barrels and less oak seems to have paid back with much better integration of the wood and additional nuance. A great effort for the vintage and a bit of a surprise#lighter and less concentrated but more drinkable. 9,000 bottles were filled in November 2018.

    The white has the same name as the entry-level red, and I tasted the 2017 Horizonte de Exopto Blanco. For the white, they have added the grapes from one more plot in the village of Ábalos that's planted exclusively with white grapes (the rest are planted with a majority of red and only individual white vines), and production has grown to 6,000 bottles. Produced in a slightly oxidative way, it's mostly Viura and 10% each Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, fermented together in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and finished in barriques. The élevage was in used 225-liter barrels (60% of the volume), concrete eggs (25% and used for the first time) and French oak demi-muids (the remaining 15%) and lasted 12 months. The new thing is the addition of the concrete egg, which seems to have added freshness, tension and aromatic complexity.     The second vintage of the top-of-the-range single-vineyard Tempranillo is the 2015 Horcajo, which reached 15% alcohol in a warm and dry year like 2015. It went through malolactic in barrique and matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. This is the most powerful and concentrated of their wines; it's quite dark and has aromas of dark fruit, roasted coffee and toast with an earthy touch and a hint of smoke. The palate is full bodied, round and lush, with decadent flavors, baroque, with lush fruit and generous oak in a very showy style.

    Picked on September 28, Ott's 2017 Grüner Veltliner Ried Feuersbrunner Spiegel 1ÖTW is very clear, subtle and elegant on the distinctive nose. In early September 2018, the nose displayed white stone fruits intertwined with refreshing, refining gravelly and floral notes. Later that month, the wine showed tropical notes on the intensely fruity, elegant, sexy nose. Full-bodied, rich and dense on the palate, with intense, lush, concentrated fruit and vitalizing, fine acidity, this is a very persistent and powerful Veltliner with a very long, forward, mineral and tensioned finish. This is a powerful but elegant giant and needs time to gain finesse and transparency. The elegance here, however, is remarkable. Tasted twice in early and late September 2018.

    The 2016 Ried Steinertal Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is from the coolest Grüner Veltliner single vineyard of the Pichler family, with sandy gneiss and granite soils. The 2016 opens with a clear and fresh but also intense fruit aroma that is still a bit discreet on the nose. The attack on the palate is really fresh and piquant due to remarkable acidity. The wine is pure and mineral, shows a good phenolic grip and reveals white fruit aromas like yellow-skinned apples. The finish is clear, fresh and grippy and shows some attractive crispy fruit flavors. This is a lean, elegant, well balanced, medium to full-bodied Grüner Veltliner with less than 13% alcohol. Tasted as a sample in early July 2017. Scheduled for bottling in late July 2017.

The muscular leanness of a long-distance runner combined with enormous minerality make this a very special grüner veltliner with an extremely long, exciting finish.     From one of the warmest sites in the Wachau, Martin Michelbach's intensely yellow colored 2016 Ried Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner Smaragd intermixes spicy flint with ripe, precise fruit aromas and lemon notes. Very elegant, pure and salty on the palate, this is a full-bodied, piquant and well-structured Loibenberg. Still very young but balanced, with vivacious acidity and good tannins, this 2016 should have a great aging potential.
