91/100 Punkte Wine Spectator October 2019 This red is dense yet plush, with blackberry and espresso flavors, accented by licorice, wild herb and mineral notes. Well-integrated tannins and balsamic acidity keep this focused. Harmonious, in a savory style. Garnacha, Merlot, Cariñena, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2027.
94/100 Punkte Falstaff okt-nov 2014 Mittleres Mahagoni, grüngelbe Reflexe.
91/100 Punkte Wines Spectator Oct 31, 2013 Anise, date, orange bitters and toffee notes are nicely melded together, with a slightly sweet edge that carries the fruitcake- and Christmas pudding-framed finish. Drink now.
93/100 Punkte James Suckling July 2019 Impressive blueberry and flinty, graphite-like aromas here with ripe plums, too. The palate has a super smooth, sleek and deliciously juicy feel, delivering plenty of ripe yet fresh blue-fruit flavor. Fine, long tannins. Drink or hold.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker August 2016 The 2015 Planetes de Nin Blanc is a new white here produced with old local varieties, in reality a varietal of the almost nonexistent Cariñena Blanca. They were in search of a local white able to produce a varietal wine with low alcohol and good acidity, so they slowly regrafted almost one hectare of Cabernet Sauvignon from their Les Planetes vineyard with material found in an old vineyard. The whole clusters had a one-day soak, then pressed, then put to ferment with indigenous yeasts and the wine matured in oak barrels for some eight months. The 2015 is a lot more polished and sleek, round and precise, with good volume that somehow hides the minerality. However, there is no track record for this variety, and nobody really knows how the wine is going to evolve. 1,104 bottles were filled in June 2016.
93/100 Punkte Falstaff, Juli 2018 Helles Goldgelb, Silberreflexe.
91/100 Punkte Robert Parker April 2018 The blend of the 2012 Terrers is unusually high in Xarello and Parellada, 60% and 7% respectively, with only 33% Macabeo. 2012 was one of the warmest and lower-yielding years in recent times (29 hectoliters per hectare), and they consider it a year apt for long aging. It has great concentration, but at the same time, the wine has higher acidity, which makes it very balanced. It aged sur lie for 56 months before it was disgorged. This is a little more oxidative of the three, with a little more development, more Mediterranean. It's very tasty.
91/100 Punkte Robert Parker, August 2018 The 2016 La Misión shows much fresher, more vibrant and alive, with much better harmony. It has depth and some chalky austerity on the palate, with varietal notes and a dry finish.
92/100 Punkte James Suckling, August 2018 Plenty of blueberry and plum-cake character. Ripe and generous with full, but quite supple tannins for a young Ribera del Duero red. Keeps pumping out the ripe flavors on the fresh and intense finish. Drink or hold.
91/100 Punkte Vinous, Jan 2017 (fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged for a year in used French and American oak casks of varying size) Ruby-red. Ripe blueberry, incense and potpourri on the perfumed nose, joined by woodsmoke and allspice nuances that build in the glass. Sweet and seamless in the mouth; intense red and blue fruit liqueur flavors deepen and spread out slowly on the back half. Discreet tannins come in late to shape the long, spice-tinged finish.
93/100 Punkte James Suckling December 2016 This shows beautiful aromas of seaweed, black ink, rosemary and asphalt. Fresh blackberries, too. Full body, fine-grained tannins and a salty, iodine-like finish. A beautiful wine. Drink now.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker Feb 2019 The nose of the 2015 Lalama reveals a warm and dry year with good ripeness. Yields were also low because they lost some 62% of the grapes to hail, and the wine is concentrated and powerful, quite fruit-driven and expressive, juicy and chewy. It has some spicy and smoky undertones and a dry, long finish. This is a modern and luxurious style of Ribeira Sacra.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker April 2018 Grapes from younger vines are used for the 2016 Les Crestes, which is also released earlier. It's a blend of Garnacha with 20% Cariñena and 10% Syrah matured in second use French oak barrels for eight months. 2016 was a dry growing season saved by a cooler September with some rain, which resulted in a relaxed and long harvest of grapes with good ripeness and acidity. It's young, tender and aromatic, a gentle Priorat with a juicy palate and a fresh personality. Really attractive and pleasant.
93/100 Punkte James Suckling July 2019 This has a deep and dark center palate of ripe yet fresh fruit and lots of spices and smoked meat. Medium to full body. Polished and chewy tannins. Yet focused and vivid. Needs two or three years of bottle age. But all there. Try after 2021.
91/100 Punkte Robert Parker June 2019 There is a new red from the village of Villabuena de Álava, a warmer place that tends to deliver more Mediterranean wines than the cooler Rivas de Tereso, and the wines are gentler and rounder, with a touch of aromatic herbs. The 2016 Raposo is the first vintage produced from some old plots planted with old vines, Tempranillo with intense flavors (the old vines have other grapes, but they represent a very small percentage) fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 3,000-liter oak vats for some 12 months.
92/100 Punkte Vinous Feb 2019 (raised in large, used French oak barrels) Deep, lurid ruby color. An expansive, highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, baking spices, tobacco and potpourri and smoky minerals, with a hint of licorice in the background. Sweet, seamless and penetrating on the palate, offering concentrated raspberry, cherry-cola and spicecake flavors that are underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Smooth, even tannins build slowly on the impressively long finish, which strongly echoes the red fruit and floral notes.
93/100 Punkte James Suckling August 2018 Plenty of spicy saffron and clove aromas hover over ripe red plums and mulberries. The palate has nice fruit-focus and depth with good tannin-weight and detail. Drink or hold.
90/100 Punkte Robert Parker April 2018 The balsamic and fruit-driven 2016 Gotes Blanques is an unoaked Garnacha Blanca from the village of La Morera de Montsant at 650 meters in altitude. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and was partly aged in cement vats. It's very fresh and delineated, with very good acidity and focused, pungent flavors and a mineral finish.
93/100 Punkte Robert Parker August 2017 A champion in quality-to-price ratio, the red 2013 Lalama wants to replicate the traditional wine produced as a field blend that is mostly Mencía with some 10% a myriad other varieties#Brancellao, Mouratón, Sousón and Garnacha Tintorera#from many different vineyards on different soils, altitudes and expositions. The destemmed and crushed grapes fermented in 2500-3500 and 4500-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic in 300-liter barriques where it was kept for 13 months followed by a further seven months in oak vat. It has an explosive and captivating nose, an explosion of wild berries and herbs, with just a creamy touch and some spices. It's redolent of acid berries, with an electric-like sensation in the palate revealing great freshness, focused flavors, very fine tannins and a clean, long and refreshing finish. This is plain delicious<(>,<)> the best Lalama I remember. 65'0 00 bottles produced. This combines quality, p
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker February 2018 The vineyard-designated 2015 Finca Valdepoleo is pure Tempranillo from vines planted in 1973 on limestone and clay soils at 630 meters altitude in the village of Laguardia. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak barrels for 14 months. It shows the style of the vintage#approachable, juicy, medium to full-bodied, clean, modern and with good ripeness and nicely integrated oak. The palate shows good balance and a powerful wine with long life ahead. There is less structure than in 2014, gentler, more approachable, with a rare combination of power and elegance. It's also balsamic and faintly Mediterranean, nicely balanced.
95/100 Punkte James Suckling August 2018 The enveloping mulberry and spice aromas on the nose are only the first of the wonders of this stunning red Rioja, which has a great tannin structure that gives the medium-full-bodied palate both stature and excitement. Very long, fresh herbal finish of considerable complexity. Drink or hold.
91/100 Punkte Wine Spectator Oct 31, 2013 Peach pit and nectarine skin notes course along, pushed by sea salt, singed orange rind and walnut accents. Shows lots of tangy nerve through the finish. Very refreshing, with excellent cut. Drink now.
94/100 Punkte James Suckling August 2018 Offers some riper fruits, in the prune and plum-paste zone, with a hint of black tea and some tarry flourishes. The palate has cool, sleek flavors of dark-fruit and licorice, supple tannins and a long, smooth finish. Seamless. Drink or hold.
92/100 Punkte Robert Parker June 2019 The red 2017 Horizonte de Exopto is a traditional blend of Tempranillo with 10% each Garnacha and Graciano, but now not all of grapes come from the village of Ábalos#since 2016, they have added two plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured 50/50 in 600-liter demi-muids and 225-liter barriques for one year. The wine is surprisingly fresh, expressive and aromatic and has a touch of black pepper, perhaps because there are more grapes from higher-altitude vineyards that didn't suffer the frost, and the result might be fresher than some wines from 2016 or 2015. The move to bigger barrels and less oak seems to have paid back with much better integration of the wood and additional nuance. A great effort for the vintage and a bit of a surprise#lighter and less concentrated but more drinkable. 9,000 bottles were filled in November 2018.
94/100 Punkte James Suckling, July 2019 This is a beautiful play between fresh blackberries, violets and lavender and dried meat, vanilla and spices. Iodine, licorice and tar all in there, too. Full body, muscular yet grainy tannins and layer after layer of plush fruit, wrapped up neatly in tangy acidity. Drink in 2022.
94+/100 Punkte Robert Parker Dec 2017 As with many other wines from the José Estévez group, there is a special bottling of Valdespino's flagship NV Fino Inocente in magnum, but in this case they have kept the bottles for six months as the wine is from the saca otoño 2016, the autumn bottling from 2016. So the wine is offered with some extra bottle age. It has all that you expect from Inocente, a long aging wine fermented in bota from grapes grown exclusively in the Macharnudo Alto vineyard and bottled with an average age of ten years. All the textbook aromas and flavors are there, coupled with the elegance and mineral intensity the Macharnudo white chalky soils provide. Customers who purchase one of this scarce magnums probably know Inocente already. This will have a longer development in bottle. Only 600 magnums were filled in the autumn of 2016.
93/100 Punkte James Suckling July 2019 Persistent, dried apples, hints of rosemary, salt and cream, following through to a medium body, creamy texture and a flavorful finish. Subtle yet complex aftertaste. Drink now.
91/100 Punkte Robert Parker December 2017 Including the 2015 Los Acilates, I had two vintages to taste of the single-vineyard red that comes from a plot that is different than the rest of the estate. It's a north-facing, steep slope rich in limestone and was planted with well-adapted Portuguese grapes#Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira Preta#in 2003. Not as hot as 2014 but still a warm and dry vintage, 2015 saw an early harvest with very healthy grapes. The grapes fermented in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts, followed by malolactic in barrique. The wine matured in well-seasoned small 500-liter French oak foudres for 12 months (they have shortened the oak aging of this wine). This is the finest vintage of this bottling I've tried so far; it has very good balance and a mixture of red and black berry fruit and floral undertones. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Amazing for the zone and for a vintage like 2015. I really believe in these grapes here. 7'000 bot
91/100 Punkte Vinous Feb 2019 Vivid ruby. Aromas of ripe red and blue fruits, pipe tobacco and cedary oak develop a smoky element as the wine stretches out. Sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering lively cherry and boysenberry flavors and subtle licorice and spice nuances. Finishes on a chewy note, delivering sneaky tannins, a lingering suggestion of dark chocolate and strong persistence.
93/100 Punkte Robert Parker June 2019 The white has the same name as the entry-level red, and I tasted the 2017 Horizonte de Exopto Blanco. For the white, they have added the grapes from one more plot in the village of Ábalos that's planted exclusively with white grapes (the rest are planted with a majority of red and only individual white vines), and production has grown to 6,000 bottles. Produced in a slightly oxidative way, it's mostly Viura and 10% each Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, fermented together in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and finished in barriques. The élevage was in used 225-liter barrels (60% of the volume), concrete eggs (25% and used for the first time) and French oak demi-muids (the remaining 15%) and lasted 12 months. The new thing is the addition of the concrete egg, which seems to have added freshness, tension and aromatic complexity. In fact, the wine makes me think of a cool vintage (and it was not), and the wine is fresh and has great ac
94/100 Punkte Robert Parker December 2018 The 2014 El Terroir has a little more depth and complexity than the previous year, even if both vintages were cold and rainy, but this 2014 seems to have more complexity, depth and nuance. It's medium bodied with fine-grained tannins and has very good balance. This cuvée seems to be improving vintage after vintage, they keep working their same vineyards, they keep improving their knowledge, and they are more experienced. The barrels are older and the integration is better. This is earthier and a little wilder than La Dama.
94/100 Punkte Robert Parker December 2018 It felt like the 2015 El Terroir was more austere than the 2014, even if the year was more generous, especially on the palate, where the wine shows strong minerality. It's more telluric than 2014, a slightly darker shade of blue, and it opens up with time in the glass. This wine has achieved a very good level, with a rare combination of power and elegance, especially in this 2015. 26,315 bottles were filled in May 2017.
92/100 Punkte James Suckling, July 2019 Impressive, ripe dark fruit and stones. A very deep, rich and juicy feel here with dark plums and ripe, succulent berries. The palate has a very succulent and focused feel with a fresh, fleshy finish. Bold style. Drink or hold.
90/100 Punkte Wine Spectator October 2019 Fresh and focused, this lively, energetic red offers bright, juicy cherry and berry flavors, with notes of licorice, vanilla and spice. Light tannins and bright acidity keep this focused. Energetic. Drink now through 2027.
91/100 Punkte Robert Parker Aug 2016 The 2014 Hado wants to showcase the freshness and typicity of Tempranillo in the zone of Laguardia in Rioja, where Pujanza's vineyards are located. 2014 was an early and warm vintage, and the grapes comes from a diversity of plots in Laguardia. The wine is fermented (malolactic included) in stainless steel vats and matured in French oak barrels for one year. This year he used a lot of grapes from the Valdepoleo vineyard (he doesn't buy grapes, but he doesn't want to sell them, either), so the wine has more character. It's usually a more straightforward wine and it has more freshness, from a clay-rich vineyard; but here, the aromas are fresher and more floral. The palate is lively, fine-grained and tasty. A very good showing for this wine.
92/100 Punkte Wine Spectator, Feb 28, 2018 Focused and lively, this lithe red delivers bright flavors of cherry, berry, mountain herb, vanilla and mineral, mingling harmoniously and supported by light, firm tannins and orange peel acidity. Not muscular, but has depth. Garnatxa, Merlot, Samsó, Syrah and Cabernet. Drink now through 2025.
91/100 Punkte Robert Parker June 2019 From the village of Rivas de Tereso/Labastida, the 2018 Blanco de Sierra de Toloño comes from different plots and is mostly Viura. It has a salty minerality and the freshness from this northern and cooler zone. Despite a very late harvest in mid-October, the wine is only 12.5%, and it's bottled without malolactic, kept in stainless steel with the lees, which are stirred until bottling. It's fruit-driven with notes of pear and waxy apples, a bit shy and with very good acidity and freshness. It should develop further complexity with a little more time in bottle. 9 ,000 bottles produced. It was bottle in March 2019.
93/100 Punkte James Suckling July 2019 There#s an apple and pear mix here that has fresh allure on the nose and delivers a zippy and attractively fresh palate that has good weight, flesh and a gently creamy, apple sorbet-like finish. Drink now.
91+/100 Punkte Robert Parker Feb 2018 The one white (so far) is the 2015 Horizonte de Exopto Blanco, produced with grapes from the scattered white vines intermixed with the reds in the old vineyards they work in Ábalos (12 different plots), usually in the poorer soils to balance yields. It's produced in a slightly oxidative way with a majority of Viura, 10% Garnacha Blanca and 5% Malvasía Riojana along with some other white varieties, all fermented together. Fermentation started in stainless steel without added yeasts and finished in barriques with an élevage of 12 months in contact with the lees, which were stirred during the first six months in barrel. There are some citrus and caramel aromas with good ripeness, and in a warmer and more Mediterranean vintage like 2015, it goes through malolactic, so the style of cooler years (2013, 2014, 2016) and warmer years is different. Here, there is more volume and more texture, but to keep the austerity of the soils, they look for freshne
91/100 Punkte Vinous, May 2017 (fermented and aged on its lees for a year in neutral French oak barrels) Light bright gold. Ripe tangerine, pear, tarragon and toasty lees on the nose, lifted by a hint of minerality. Dry and focused on the palate, offering concentrated orchard and citrus fruit, honey and buttered toast flavors and a subtle touch of honeysuckle. Closes smoky, tight and long, leaving a suave floral note behind.
90/100 Punkte Robert Parker Dec 2017 The 2016 La Zarcita is a blend of Trincadeira Preta, Touriga Nacional and Garnacha Tintorera grapes from limestone, clay and sand soils. In 2015 they also planted red Garnacha with the idea to include it in future vintages of this blend. There was more rain than average in 2016, and that allowed the ripening cycle to be longer, which is something really good in a region like this. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic and eight months in new and second use 500-liter French oak barrels. It's very floral and perfumed, with a captivating nose. It's still a straightforward red but with more depth than in previous vintages and especially great freshness. 2016 seems like a very good vintage in the zone. The palate is approachable and soft, with very good acidity. And it's a bargain! 30,000 bottles produced.
90/100 Punkte James Suckling July 2019 Nice touch of complexity to this red on the nose with walnut, wet-earth and berry character that follows through to a medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a tangy, slightly bitter finish. Drink now.
90/100 Punkte James Suckling August 2018 The full, plum-cake nose and the supple and slightly sweet palate make this easy to drink, but there is some structure behind all that and the finish is well balanced and quite long.
92/100 Punkte James Suckling, December 2016 A deep and beautiful nose of ripe strawberries and hints of dried flowers and soft spices. Medium-bodied with medium, juicy and soft tannins and a long, fresh and fruity finish. Drink now.
