Leuchtendes Strohgelb.

Donnafugata's 2018 Sicilia Anthìlia is a Catarratto-based blend with a very pretty and delicate aromatic profile that incorporates elements of white flower, honey, pear and passion fruit. This is a zesty and streamlined white wine (that sees no oak) to drink on easy occasions with light finger foods or bite-sized sushi rolls.

Luminous straw yellow. Fresh, crisp aromas and flavors of white peach, lime and aromatic herbs. Juicy and fresh, with lovely sugar acid balance and sneaky concentration and length. Outstanding Anthìlia that seems to have more stuffing than usual while retaining its trademark easy drinking, uncomplicated style.

Light vivid orange. Ripe red berry and citrus fruit aromas are complicated by a subtle floral note and a hint of dusty minerals. Fleshy, spice-tinged raspberry and bitter cherry flavors open up slowly and turn sweeter with air. Distinctly concentrated but lively as well, closing with firm grip and repeating cherry and floral notes. Nothing easygoing here (it does check in at 14.5% alcohol, by the way), despite its relatively humble appellation.

Even if they are not quite from the Duero zone but from Bierzo, I also tasted their whites produced with Godello grapes, including the 2018 El Zarzal, which has 13% alcohol, very good acidity and low pH. It was produced with fruit from vines averaging 15 years of age, and it fermented in oak at controlled temperature. It matured in French 2 ,500-liter oak foudres with lees for eight months. It's expressive and aromatic, with some grape-pulp aromas, somehow floral and with a spicy touch. It's varietal and clean, with integrated oak, a medium-bodied palate and a refreshing finish, serious and with a mineral twist.

The rosé 2018 Hito Rosado is a fresher, young and pale equivalent to their red, bottled unoaked and without malolactic. This is a serious and mineral rosé, with a reductive personality and a little backward, not an explosive rosé but rather austere, with a balanced palate and a dry finish. Not a banal rosé. 54,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2018.

Cariñena Blanca has finally been added to the registry of varieties in Spain, which means it should soon be allowed by the Priorat appellation, so they could start putting it on the labels of the 2018 Planetes de Nin Carinyena Blanca. This fermented and matured in used 300-liter oak barrels for seven months. It's 13% alcohol and has a pH of 3.2 with 6.5 grams of acidity (tartaric); they struggled to get the minimum 13% alcohol required by the appellation, as the year was very cold and they lost a lot of grapes waiting for the alcohol level. It's a year with lots of freshness, and the wine, which feels really young and undeveloped, needs some time in the glass to open up. This is an exceptional year that is going to develop slowly in bottle. The palate is vibrant, focused and dry, with citrus freshness and a mineral finish. 1,948 bottles were filled in April 2018.

Lush and sweet on the palate, this is a charming, piquant and salty Riesling with remarkable finesse but quite a bit of residual sugar (around 90 grams per liter). From the village of Rivas de Tereso/Labastida, the 2018 Blanco de Sierra de Toloño comes from different plots and is mostly Viura. It has a salty minerality and the freshness from this northern and cooler zone. Despite a very late harvest in mid-October, the wine is only 12.5%, and it's bottled without malolactic, kept in stainless steel with the lees, which are stirred until bottling. It's fruit-driven with notes of pear and waxy apples, a bit shy and with very good acidity and freshness. It should develop further complexity with a little more time in bottle. 9 ,000 bottles produced. It was bottle in March 2019.

Welcome to the first rosato to join the Donnafugata family of wines. The 2018 Etna Rosato Sul Vulcano is an unoaked Nerello Mascalese that opens to a very pretty, pale pink color with soft tones of wild berry, apple and mint tea. Delicate mineral sensations give the wine beautiful focus and clarity. The presentation is excellent all around. I could see this as a great accompaniment to a Moroccan-style chicken tagine.

Bright orange-tinged pale pink. Captivating aromas of raspberry, pomegranate, wisteria and minerals. Then multilayered and dense, with zingy acidity lifting the mineral red fruit and floral flavors. Finishes long, sweet and suave. An outstanding Rosato characterized by great precision and sneaky concentration. Made with 100% Nerello Mascalese via cold maceration in press for 6-12 hours at 10°C followed by fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. A new wine from Donnafugata, and I would say they have a real winner on their hands. Well done.

The second wine in the price hierarchy is the 2017 Almirez, produced with vines aged 10 to 35 years old from their 72 hectares of vineyards in the villages of Valdefinjas and Toro. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels, 30% of them new, the rest second use, for 14 months. 2017 is one of the driest years with one of the earliest harvests ever, but surprisingly enough, the wines feel lighter, fresh and aromatic, expressive and open and do not show any heat. Furthermore, it feels like a fresher year in the sense that the wine integrates the oak quite well. The change here, as Marcos Eguren explained, has been in the toast of the barrels, something they started in 2015; they have lighter toasts, from a long and slow toasting of the oak, and the barrel respects the fruit a lot more. Fine-tuning continues...

The 2017 Barbera d'Alba is a child of a hot vintage, and there's no missing its correspondingly sweet and dark fruit flavors. This vintage actually makes for an especially vibrant expression of Barbera, with solid notes of prune and spice. The fruit comes from parcels between Monforte d'Alba and Novello, from higher elevations where there is more wind and coolness. There is a pretty sweetness here and a nice balance and freshness considering the heat. You might pair this one with a beef-and-beet borscht topped with sour cream and dill.

The 2017 Burgenland Blaufränkisch is pure and fruity on the fresh, precise nose and offers a charm, which is quite rare given this wild and spicy grape variety. Silky and intense on the palate, this is a fleshy, well-concentrated and pretty intense red from the deep and clayey soils of Zagersdorf. The fine, cultivated tannins are intermixed with refreshing, Pinot-like acidity, and the finish is aromatic, taut and dry, like thick cherry skins. Gorgeous. Tasted October 2018.

On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and gourmand, with racy acids and a long, saline finish. Hints of oak and licorice accent black cherries in this big, plush, velvety-textured wine, which is 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% each Syrah and Vaccarèse. One of the few estates where the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape actually eclipses the 2016, this is a top-flight effort. Black cherries and red raspberries combine with dried spices in a complex swirl of fruity and savory elements, garnished with sprigs of garrigue. Full-bodied, round and rich, this velvety wine should drink well through at least 2035.

Limpid ruby-red. A highly perfumed, expansive bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, garrigue and exotic spices, and a smoky mineral note emerges as the wine opens up. Sweet and broad on the palate, offering juicy raspberry, cherry compote, spicecake and candied lavender flavors that tighten up slowly on the back half. Conveys both power and finesse and betrays no rough edges. Fine-grained tannins come in late on a very long, spicy finish that leaves suave floral and red fruit preserve notes behind.

The 2017 Dolcetto d'Alba is even more Dolcetto-like in this hot vintage. This Piedmont variety loves a hot, dry summer, and that's exactly what it got during this scorching growing season. The bouquet bursts open to raw plum and succulent flavors that include dried blackberry and candied cherry. This wine is particularly opulent, rich and exuberant. It's almost too much of a good thing, in a positive way. Luciano Sandrone tells me this was the first vintage in his long winemaking career in which he harvested his Dolcetto before the end of August.

One of two new single-vineyard reds, the 2017 El Espinal comes from a plot in San Vicente de la Sonsierra at 650 meters in altitude, on sandy soils with clay and limestone surrounded by pine trees. The particularity here is that Maturana Tinta (a.k.a. Castests, a relative of Carmenere) was regrafted on Garnacha some 25 years ago, and this is a varietal Maturana, which is quite rare. It fermented in 225-liter barrels and matured in 600-liter barrels for 15 months. There is more concentration and more of everything, including the peppery and herbal aromas, and a pungent note of freshly cracked back peppercorn on the palate. It's a more powerful and long-lived year, and it's impossible to guess as Rioja because the profile is completely Atlantic and would fool almost everybody in a blind tasting. So, it's not for you if you hate the herbal character of the Bordeaux wines. 1,200 bottles were filled in March 2019.

Bottled in June 2018, this Federspiel is very elegant and fresh on the palate, where just one gram of residual sugar gives a clear and stimulating character. Produced in a slightly oxidative way, it's mostly Viura and 10% each Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, fermented together in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and finished in barriques. The élevage was in used 225-liter barrels (60% of the volume), concrete eggs (25% and used for the first time) and French oak demi-muids (the remaining 15%) and lasted 12 months. The red 2017 Horizonte de Exopto is a traditional blend of Tempranillo with 10% each Garnacha and Graciano, but now not all of grapes come from the village of Ábalos#since 2016, they have added two plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured 50/50 in 600-liter demi-muids and 225-liter barriques for one year. The wine is surprisingly fresh, expressive and aromatic and has a touch of black pepper, perhaps because there are more grapes from higher-altitude vineyards that didn't suffer the frost, and the result might be fresher than some wines from 2016 or 2015. The move to bigger barrels and less oak seems to have paid back with much better integration of the wood and additional nuance. A great effort for the vintage and a bit of a surprise#lighter and less concentrated but more drinkable. 9,000 bottles were filled in November 2018.

It's bottled unoaked and matured in amphorae to see what the pure grape delivers. It's fruit-driven and shows some ripeness from a warm and dry year. This tends to have very high acidity, so the grapes are picked late to achieve good ripeness. It fermented in tinaja (amphorae), where it's kept for a few months and then is bottled early. Not yet bottled at the time of my visit, but the 2017 Lirac La Reine des Bois was blended. It's 40% Syrah and 30% each Grenache and Mourvèdre, with 10% aged in barriques and the rest kept in tank. There is a slight cedary note and hints of baking spices, but the focus is on layers of plush, ripe fruit. Cherries#both red and black#mark the full-bodied, velvety-textured palate, lingering on the long finish. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.

The 2017 Malleolus is also pure Tempranillo, in this case from small parcels (in Spanish "majuelo" and in Latin "malleolus") of vines aged between 25 and 75 years of age. Yields were reduced by 50% in 2017, so it's a very unusual vintage. It matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. As I found with the rest of 2017s, this is very expressive, aromatic and fresh, floral, aromatic, happy and expressive, without excess ripening and with fruit in the foreground and the oak neatly folded into the fruit. It's juicy, medium to full-bodied, perhaps not as concentrated as others, but balanced, with fine-grained tannins; it's very pleasant and representative of the grape and zone. Very good for the conditions of the year.

There are now new wines from Villabuena de Álava, so the 2017 NAHI Blanco has been joined by a red with the same name. It has volume and more clout and depth and keeps very good freshness. She tries to keep the oak to a minimum to keep the fruit and the origin. This 2017 feels a little shy and has a smoky touch, with floral notes and some citrus aromas and flavors, and it only has a sweet-ish touch on the finish. It's mostly Viura but has other white grapes, such as Malvasía Riojana and other old varieties like Calagraño and Rojal. It comes from five small plots, and they only produce 600 bottles, so yields were extremely low. It takes some time to take off in the glass, but it finally develops beautiful aromatics, including some mineral/diesel-like tones, which might give us an idea of how slowly the wine is going to develop in bottle. The vineyards are in the process of being recovered, so the volume might increase in the following years.

With scorching heat and little rain overall, there was reason for worry during the 2017 growing season at large, but in the Roero zone by the banks of the Tanaro river, the hilly Valmaggiore vineyards received more rain than other parts of Piedmont, so these grapes did not suffer as much. Lovely notes of red rose and some herbal tones appear on the nose of the 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore, coupled with balsam, spice and rosemary. It's voluminous in the mouth, and while the Le Vigne Barolo tends to be the most floral and delicately ethereal of Sandrone's release, this bouquet is distinctive in its own way. It would be a nice pair with a mushroom risotto.

It has a beautiful and subtle nose that's very spicy (cloves and cumin, curry and pink pepper) and floral, with a palate that feels light but has great depth and inner power, with pungent flavors and subtle minerality.

It is in years like these that the work we do in the field is rewarded. In spite of the climatic exceptionality, we have acidity and pH that seem like a miracle to us. Our vines did not suffer the severe frosts of this 2017." The wine has lower alcohol than the 2016 but the same pH of 3.3; insultingly young and tender, it doesn't feel like the wine had a long élevage in oak. It has kept very good freshness and great balance. It's tasty, pungent and long, with power and elegance and all the components to develop nicely in bottle.

The red Callet 2017 Sòtil, which means roof in Mallorquin, wants to show lightness and freshness, a more ethereal wine, if you want the opposite of their Tripsol. The grapes are selected from vines in Felanitx on red soils and part from the 67-year-old d#Es Pou de Sa Carrera vineyard in Porreres. 2017 was an unusually warm and early harvest (they started on the 9th of August, their earliest ever). The mostly destemmed and uncrushed grapes with 10% full clusters fermented in open-top 500-liter oak barrels and had a 20-day maceration. The wine matured in a combination of barriques, amphorae and stainless steel tanks. The wine has moderate alcohol (12%), a pale bright ruby color and an intoxicating nose of flowers and herbs#violets, lilies, rockrose, thyme and all things Mediterranean. I also tasted the 2017 Victorino, from a year that was very different from the warm and dry 2017, as 2016 was cold and wet and saw a very late and slow picking because of the slow and late ripening of the fruit. Fermentation and élevage were the same (20 months in 100% new oak), so the differences are due to the vintage conditions. I was very surprised by this 2017 (as with the rest of the 2017s from this address), as I found a fresh and balanced wine, perhaps a little lighter, with round and fine tannins. There are still oak-related aromas and flavors, but there is less toast (they use a different toast for the barrels), and the wine should integrate it with a little more time in bottle. But it should be approachable while you wait for the 2016.

Rather than pair this wine with a Sicilian dessert, serve it as the Sicilian dessert. The 2016 Passito di Pantelleria Ben Ryé is a radiant and beautifully fragrant edition with white raisins, honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, caramel, preserved lemon, dried sage, apricot and sea salt. I could go on. The wine is light on its feet thanks to that crisp acidity, yet it has the volume and richness to coat your palate in all its luscious glory. The whole package is explosive.

Luminous golden-orange. Perfumed and precise honeyed aromas and flavors of cane sugar, peach, mango, papaya, passion fruit and dates. Suave, very sweet and rich, with a dense yet light on its feet quality, this boasts a long finish that features notes of peach and honey. An outstanding Ben Ryé that strikes me as less fragrant but more suave than some recent vintages. Ben Ryé is one of Italy#s five or ten best sweet wines every year and it#s safe to say this year#s version will not harm its reputation any.

91+/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Feb 2018
Peter Wegelin's single-vineyard 2016 Malanser Blauburgunder Scadena is from very calcareous slate soils from a clos that is located below the Bothmar castle. The wine was aged for 12 months in 80% new barriques and another 12 months in used tonneaux. The bouquet is deep, intensely ripe and fruity as well as toasty but very elegant. The palate is full-bodied, dense and tightly structured, with fine but grippy tannins and good acidity. This clear-cut 2016 needs lots of aeration (or time), but its vitality and tension is promising. Release date: autumn this year. Tasted January 2019.

This wine sees fruit sourced from the warm and sunny Maremma area on coastal Tuscany. The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon shows an inky dark appearance with dark garnet color saturation. It offers a fine and chiseled aromatic profile with dark berry fruit followed by spice, anise seeds and an unmistakable balsamic note that reminds me of eucalyptus oil. This is a mid-weight expression of the grape that is both accessible and easy to drink straight out of the gate. It ages in neutral oak for 12 months. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

    92/100 Punkte Vinous Feb 2019
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, from Brancaia's vineyards in Maremma, expresses a good bit of varietal character and overall nuance. Fleshy, dark and seductive, the 2016 will drink well with minimal cellaring. Today, it is very pretty and delicious.

Shows beautiful, blue fruit, as well as lavender, crushed stones and violets. Medium to full body, lithe and endearing tannins and a fine, tangy finish. Drink now.

This blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Sangiovese and a smaller percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon has one of the most impressive track records of a modern Tuscan blend that I can think of. The 2016 Il Blu is a beautifully balanced and precise blend that pits the freshness and authenticity of Sangiovese against the softness and fruitiness of the Merlot. Although the Sangiovese plays a supporting role in the blend, its influence and signature go far to creating the overall identity of this special wine. It's a very nice effort to celebrate with a grilled T-bone.

Brancaia's Il Blu is gorgeous in 2016. Fresh, perfumed and beautifully lifted, the 2016 strikes a captivating balance between power and finesse. Red cherry, flowers, mint, cinnamon and blood orange all give the 2016 brightness and vitality, and yet there is plenty of the richness readers have come to expect from this wine as well. The 2016 is one of the more polished, nuanced vintages of Brancaia I can remember tasting.

Blackberries, dark cherries, Thai basil, peppermint tea, bark, cassis and pure blackcurrants all come to mind. A full body, characterized by layered but racy rich fruit, yet there#s an unmistakable current of acidity that doesn#t let go. Very classy and elegant with remarkable finesse and freshness. Drink from 2025.

The 2016 Alto Adige Cabernet Riserva Mumelter is very true to the variety (and the cool, mountainous climate of Alto Adige) with greenish aromas of peppercorn, forest floor, wild herb and dark plummy fruit. This is a full-bodied expression to pair with hearty winter dishes served at ski lodges and alpine resorts with a roaring fire. Smoke, tar and licorice add more volume and complexity to the bouquet. This wine will appeal to those who like tightly focused and sharp expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon (with a tiny part Cabernet Franc).
