In 1977, Sandrine's grandfather was one of the first vignerons to plant Païen (a.k.a. Heida or Savagnin) in the French-speaking part of the Valais. Sandrine still cultivates the old plot that is planted with green and yellow Savagnin. Her organically farmed 2018 Païen Les Bernunes opens with a deep, intense and concentrated bouquet with a deep layer of crushed stones and delicately aromatic ripe fruit aromas. Full-bodied, lush and round, with fine tannins rather than vibrant acidity like the Petite Arvine, this is rich and almost oily-textured Savagnin with a long and tannic finish that is still tight, with tannins that seem to be slightly greenish. This Païen has some features of red wine, like what you find in serious Gewürztraminers, and I'd recommend waiting another year or two before serving the 2018. Tasted in January 2020.

The Siro Pacenti 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli is a rich and pleasing wine with very nice aromatics. Of these two new releases, the Pelagrilli is more characteristic of Tuscany and Sangiovese. The Vecchie Vigne expression tastes far more international or contemporary (read: it has more oak flavors) in comparison. I tend to prefer this wine especially in a vintage like 2015 that is so naturally expressive and powerful to begin with. The bouquet opens to dried cherry with dusty mineral notes and dried Mediterranean herb. On the the finish, you taste some of that sweetness that comes with aging in French barrique. Some 23 ,000 bottles were released in January 2020.

Medium dark bright red. Brooding nose hints at tar, earth, menthol and tobacco complicating medium-ripe red cherry and blood orange aromas. Very clean and long, with lively red cherry strawberry jelly, botanical herbs and a hint of chocolate on the long youthfully chewy and delicately peppery finish. Outstanding young Brunello that is marked by the clay notes of the soils of the Pellagrilli zone of Montalcino. This strikes me as one of the best young Pellagrilli Brunellos ever. Made from 25-35 years old vines and spent 24 months in 50% new oak barriques.

This wine has a range rather than a single score because it was not clear when it would rereleased. The 2017 Collio Orientali del Friuli Pinot Bianco Riserva represents a first attempt to vinify this grape by this Friuli estate. The fruit was pressed lightly and fermented in large oak casks, remaining in oak until June of the following year before going into bottle to rest for more time. The wine is wide and large in the mouth, covering the palate with pretty tones of apricot and stone fruit along with almond and pastry crust. This was not an easy vintage, but this represents a noble effort nonetheless.

Vinified in used barriques for almost a year, the 2018 Pinot Blanc Gässli is the first release of this wine from the Schaffhausen AOC. The golden-yellow colored 2018 opens with an intense but elegant and even pure bouquet of very ripe but still precise white fruits intertwined with yeasty and some flinty notes. Full-bodied, rich and elegant on the palate, this Pinot Blanc is creamy textured, round and smooth yet complex and refreshingly mineral, with a fine grip and tension on the long, salty finish. Excellent. Tasted in October 2019.

The 2016 Friuli Isonzo Rive Alte Pinot Grigio Dessimis is classified as a white, but it is really a ramato, or copper in color, reflecting the real color of this grape's skins. Slightly reductive in nature, it brings out notes of cranberry and bright cassis with some white cherry as well. It was fermented in steel and aged on the lees in barrique. This is a very interesting wine that would make a good pairing with sliced porchetta. Exactly 52,286 bottles were released.

It's 60% Garnacha (some of it Peluda) and the rest Cariñena, harvested early. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 3,200-liter oak vats and one 1,000-liter amphora for 17 months. It has depth and harmony, and the vines are getting older and seem to be better and better balanced. This is not that different from the 2016; it feels quite stable and has its style and character, especially since the 2015 vintage.

Of the Symington selections this issue (including the sister producer Prats & Symington), this is the best value, the biggest overachiever. One of the best in the brand so far#maybe the best yet#this starts off with that great fruit laced with plums and dried blueberries, but it does not neglect the concepts of balance, finesse and structure. It has a fresh and focused bouquet with subtle honeysuckle and beeswax aromas threaded through the citrus fruit. I appreciate the manner in which this unfolds with aeration. The palate is vibrant on the entry with good acidity but then the second half just seems a little simple by comparison. A wine of two halves, the first better than the second, but overall a very sound Pouilly-Fuissé Vers Cras that may well warrant a higher score in the future.

Seeming like just-crushed fruit, this is remarkably concentrated for the level, without being jammy. Expressive, fruit forward and still supported by good structure, this is a big, ripe and rather dramatic Prazo this year. The fruit does have a certain warmth to it. That doesn't mean heat, to be clear, but ripeness. It is not always the most lifted fruit on the finish. However, this certainly tastes great and has some sex appeal. The price is right for the big finish and flavor. At the moment, you might like it even better than the score suggests. It would be nice if it could develop a bit more finesse with a year in the cellar, but if you're looking for one to cellar, the producer's Post Scriptum (reviewed this issue as well) would be a better choice

Packed with plums and black cherries, it also has a darker and much richer flavor profile#there's a relatively warm feel here#than Chryseia, less elegance but more intensity in terms of both structure and fruit. To me, this sumptuous red is the better wine with a higher upside potential, although it certainly has some things to prove in the cellar. Although relatively less elegant, this is by no means jammy or even close to clumsy. It is also beautifully constructed. In fact, I was impressed with its balance and refinement. Their vineyard-selection cuvée 2007 Reserva Particular currently in the market is from a great vintage in the region, especially for Xarello#even if this is a blend of 64% Macabeo and 36% Xarello, I think this has to be one of the finest vintages, at least in recent times, along with 2001 and 2004. This comes from three separate vineyards and is always a little riper, more developed, and in this vintage, it combines power with freshness, like in the best vintages. The 2007 vintage was dry, and Recaredo's vineyards yielded 33.5 hectoliters per hectare, when the appellation of origin allowed up to 88 hectoliters per hectare that year. The wine has 12% alcohol and an extremely low pH (2.96), which means very healthy acidity. The Xarello fermented in oak barrels and the Macabeo in stainless steel. The wine was put in bottle for the aging with yeasts in April 2008 and was disgorged nine years and nine months later (117 months). The long aging has

It combines incredible aromas (truffle, white flowers, bakery, flour, royal jelly, brioche) with great freshness and an explosive palate that has pungent flavors and intense minerality and is light but with great density and a super long finish. The wine matured for over ten years with the lees in the bottle yet is fresh and feels very young. Astonishingly good! The bottle I tasted was disgorged for me, as the wine is still aging and will come into the market at the end of 2019 or early 2020. There are some 5,000 bottles of this elixir.

90+/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Feb 2020
The 2015 Blauburgunder Reserve Privée is an intensely aromatic and concentrated Pinot Noir that opens with a super ripe, warm, fleshy and spicy bouquet of dark berries, licorice and toasty notes. Round and smooth on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense, fine, well-structured and refreshing Pinot with fine grape tannins yet still pretty palatable oak flavors and tannins. This 2015 is firm, pure and fresh, and it's developing very well. Still a wine to cellar or to open early in advance, this 2015 should age very well. Tasted in October 2019.
