    Luciano Sandrone and his daughter Barbara tell me that the 2014 harvest needs explaining. Many are quick to dismiss it given the difficulties of the growing season that saw abundant rain, hail and bombe d'acqua, or "water bombs," which are a dangerous phenomenon with intense rainfall in a very small radius. But hard work does pay off. The Sandrone family employed 38 people for farming, when the average harvest requires only 22 pairs of vineyard hands. Great care was required to keep the leaves and the clusters healthy. The 2014 Barolo le Vigne is bright and fruit-forward. It is perhaps more accessible in the near term compared to past editions. It delivers dark fruit nuances over a mid-weight and compact mouthfeel.

    The 2014 Barolo Le Vigne once again shows the wisdom of blending fruit from different sites. If there is a vintage where blending has the potential to be the difference-maker, 2014 is it. So it is hardly surprising to find the 2014 Le Vigne in such great shape. The red cherry jam, mint, cedar and floral notes are all finely sketched. Medium in body and classy, the 2014 is beautifully textured and inviting from start to finish. All the elements are simply in the right place. Vineyard sources are Merli, Vignane, Villero and Baudana.

    Luciano Sandrone expected this would be a beautiful year for Nebbiolo, with fruit showing the qualities of an important wine all throughout the growing season and right up to harvest. And yes, the 2015 Barolo le Vigne did turn out to be a great vintage, with a full aromatic array of perfumed rose, lavender and violet. For all of its generosity and expressiveness, with just a beautiful bouquet that sings out a seductive mezzo-soprano aria, be forewarned that in the mouth this is followed by rigidity and nervousness. That explosive bouquet might mislead you into thinking this is a rather evolved wine, but you certainly feel its youth on the palate. To be frank, this was an easy year to make wine, and it's not a big surprise that this edition of le Vigne turned out to be as classic and as good as it is. It should get even better with time.

    The 2015 Barolo Le Vigne is a wine of pure and extreme grace. Silky and nuanced on the palate, with tremendous character, the 2015 is all class. Rose petal, mint and sweet red berry fruit are laced together in this super-expressive Barolo. Medium in body, with radiant fruit and brisk tannins, the 2015 Le Vigne is a terrific example of the vintage at its best. Today, the 2015 is decidedly reticent. I have seen Le Vigne open up with time in bottle. I imagine that will be the case here as well, although the wine is quite closed down at this stage. Vineyard sources are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli.

    Glänzendes, sattes Rubin mit leichtem Granatrand. Sehr intensive und blitzsaubere Nase, nach Himbeere, etwas Safran, Zwetschke, einladend. Zeigt am Gaumen schöne saftige Frucht, breitet sich mit Druck, aber auch mit Eleganz aus, engmaschiges Tannin, zugleich sehr geschmeidig, tänzelt dahin.

    Now with the distance of time, the 2009 harvest was perhaps not as elegant (generally speaking) as the 2008, but mercifully cooler than the 2007. A ten-year late release, the 2009 Barolo Le Vigne Sibi et Paucis offers plenty of dense, black fruit, along with succulence and plumpness. This vintage of Le Vigne sourced fruit from Monforte d#Alba, but this is no longer the case in the vintage to follow. The tannic structure is there, and this wine seems to be held together with a magical string. You'll find warm, earthy tones covering the whole mouth evenly. As elegant as this Barolo is, I'd be tempted to pair its dark fruit and earthy notes with a simple homemade pasta with sausage, onion and sautéed chanterelles or any other home-cooked dish that is near to your heart.

The 2016 Passito di Pantelleria Ben Ryé is a radiant and beautifully fragrant edition with white raisins, honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, caramel, preserved lemon, dried sage, apricot and sea salt. I could go on. The wine is light on its feet thanks to that crisp acidity, yet it has the volume and richness to coat your palate in all its luscious glory. The whole package is explosive.

    Disgorged in July 2019, the latest release of Drappier's NV Brut Blanc de Blancs exhibits aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, oyster shell and white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, vinous and incisive, with lovely cut, a youthfully frothy mousse and chalky grip on the finish. Still a little introverted after its recent disgorgement, this is a fine Blanc de Blancs from Drappier, a Pinot Noir specialist.

    The 2017 Burgenland Blaufränkisch is pure and fruity on the fresh, precise nose and offers a charm, which is quite rare given this wild and spicy grape variety. Silky and intense on the palate, this is a fleshy, well-concentrated and pretty intense red from the deep and clayey soils of Zagersdorf. The fine, cultivated tannins are intermixed with refreshing, Pinot-like acidity, and the finish is aromatic, taut and dry, like thick cherry skins. Gorgeous. Tasted October 2018.

    From an old high-density plot with 50- to 100-year-old Blaufränkisch vines on the deep and loamy soils of Zagersdorf, the 2012 Jagini Zagersdorf is very pure, precise, fresh and spicy on the nose. Silky textured, with a ripe and fleshy fruit concentration, ripe tannins and great tension, this is a lovely pure and grippy red raised for three years in barrels of different sizes (500, 1500 and 1700 liters) and another year in bottle. The plot is planted with 8,000 vines per hectare (1.20 x 1.20 m) and the material is obviously from Hungary (no clones, just mass selections). Whereas the 2011 was only two years in barrels, the 2012 (and the 2013) remain three years due to the loamy soils which produces wines that develop only slowly.

    This vintage was not part of the official Le Piane Boca retrospective, but I had the chance to taste the wine during my visit to the estate. The 2015 Boca is a charming wine, with soothing and seductive fruit exuberance. Compared to the 2016 vintage (which I tasted from barrel), this 2015 edition is slightly more accessible and open. That's the characteristic of this vintage. It shows soft roundness and ripeness with extremely intact aromas of wild berry, licorice and candied raspberry.

    Tenuta le Colonne is an estate I have never visited, but I feel like I have because I spent a good amount of time over by their neighbors during my last trip to Bolgheri. This property and Tenuta Argentiera look onto each other and are absolutely blessed by some of the most magnificent positioning possible along the Tuscan Coast. The vineyard that produces the 2015 Bolgheri Superiore spans from the seashore at five meters above sea level to 150 meters. This is a darkly concentrated wine with rich aromas of blackberry, ripe current, spice and tobacco. This is a structured, firm wine that sits squarely on the palate.

    The just-bottled red 2018 Bozeto de Exopto is a superb young and fruit-driven blend of 50% Tempranillo and 40% Garnacha with a 10% pinch of Graciano to add freshness. The destemmed but uncrushed grapes fermented in stainless steel, concrete and oak containers with indigenous yeasts and matured for six months, the Garnacha in concrete, the Tempranillo in oak vats and a blend of Tempranillo and Graciano in well-seasoned barriques. 2018 was clearly a cool, Atlantic vintage (as opposed to Mediterranean vintages), and the grapes ripened slowly; some of the grapes (the Garnacha) were harvested later than ever. This juicy and fruit-driven young red is aromatic and more fluid, fresher and approachable. The palate is fresh and light, a wine to enjoy without moderation! 75,000 bottles produced make this 75% of the production of the winery. It was bottled in April 2019.

    This wine sees fruit sourced from the warm and sunny Maremma area on coastal Tuscany. The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon shows an inky dark appearance with dark garnet color saturation. It offers a fine and chiseled aromatic profile with dark berry fruit followed by spice, anise seeds and an unmistakable balsamic note that reminds me of eucalyptus oil. This is a mid-weight expression of the grape that is both accessible and easy to drink straight out of the gate. It ages in neutral oak for 12 months. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

    Deep, dark and sophisticated, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Corte Pavone is a solid buy from this vintage. The wine opens to an inky dark appearance and a deep garnet color. The aromas span over to black fruit, oak spice, tobacco and espresso. They definitely represent the more contemporary side of the Sangiovese bouquet. There is good textural firmness and volume here to glue all those strong flavors tightly together.

    This is the inaugural release of a new single-vineyard wine from Loacker's Corte Pavone estate in Tuscany. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Corte Pavone Fiore del Vento (with only 1,800 bottles made) is a thickly endowed expression of Brunello that excels both in terms of bouquet and mouthfeel texture. This is a beautifully expressive wine in terms of aromas, with dark fruit, ripe cherry, blackberry, toasted almond, balsam herb and crushed mineral. You get the full Brunello package here, albeit on the modern and contemporary side of the style spectrum. Similar intensity and generosity are imparted to the palate, where the wine performs with balanced power and elegance. The wine could age, but it also drinks well straight out of the gate.

It is composed of leather, spice and even a touch of smoked meat. Dark fruit remains at the core. Like the other wines from this vintage, the mouthfeel is on the short side, but the generosity of the bouquet does much to compensate this fact. In this difficult vintage, bottle production is only 5,000 strong.

    The 2016 Alto Adige Cabernet Riserva Mumelter is very true to the variety (and the cool, mountainous climate of Alto Adige) with greenish aromas of peppercorn, forest floor, wild herb and dark plummy fruit.     The single-vineyard red 2016 Camino de Santa Cruz is a wine she wanted to call Rivas de Tereso, but she was not allowed, so she named it after the plot where the grapes grow. It's an aromatic red with intense aromas of violets and the hallmark signature of 2016, and has a surplus of minerality because of the high limestone content of the soils, with some Mediterranean undertones. With time in the glass, it reveals some classical Rioja notes of forest floor, truffle and mushrooms. It fermented in 300-liter amphorae and matured in well-seasoned, neutral 500-liter oak barrels for 12 months. The medium-bodied palate is elegant, and the tannins are round and make it very pleasant and approachable.

    2015 saw a return to dry and warm years like 2012, and the 2015 1902 Centenary Carignan was saved from the heat wave in July by 60 liters of rain in June. The destemmed grapes fermented with neutral yeasts in stainless steel, and the wine matured in three brand new French oak barrels for 16 months. The technical data lists almost seven grams of residual sugar, which surprised me. It's ripe, full-bodied and powerful, concentrated and juicy. It's a very powerful and heady Cariñena, with a polished texture. It feels tender and young. 864 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2017. I had the chance to taste a bottle of the never-released 2005, an experimental vintage from a year that could have some similarities with 2015, and the wine felt very balanced and still young, not showing any heat.

    The blend of the 2012 Terrers is unusually high in Xarello and Parellada, 60% and 7% respectively, with only 33% Macabeo. 2012 was one of the warmest and lower-yielding years in recent times (29 hectoliters per hectare), and they consider it a year apt for long aging. It has great concentration, but at the same time, the wine has higher acidity, which makes it very balanced. It aged sur lie for 56 months before it was disgorged. This is a little more oxidative of the three, with a little more development, more Mediterranean. It's very tasty.
