    The 2013 Cavalli is a terrific expression from a crisp and cooler vintage. The wine is composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Petit Verdot and 15% Cabernet Franc, aged in oak for 18 months and in bottle for an additional 18 months. I should underline that the Petit Verdot percentage plays a much bigger role in this vintage and I'm told this will also be the case in the future. The bouquet here reveals dark tones of spice and black fruit, and the wine offers the thick color saturation and fruity concentration to match. The finish is layered, rich and opulent.

    They are releasing the 2004 Turó d'en Mota after they sold the 2005, as they felt that the vintage needed more time in bottle. From this vintage onward it carries the new official denomination of Cava de Paraje Calificado. As they have done since the initial 1999, it comes from a single vineyard that gives the wine its name, and this is only the seventh vintage sold of the 19 they have produced, as it's sold after no less than 12 years (yes, YEARS!) in bottle with the lees. They consider 2004 one of the exceptional vintages in Penedès. It's pure Xarello from 0.97 hectares of vines planted in 1940 on limestone-rich soils. It was put in bottle in May 2005, and the bottle I tasted was disgorged in June 2017, 145 months later. It has great complexity, with smoky and yeasty notes, open yet subtle and elegant, with a sensation of freshness and harmony you only see in the finest vintages, which tend to be wetter and cooler years.     The blend of the 2012 Terrers is unusually high in Xarello and Parellada, 60% and 7% respectively, with only 33% Macabeo. 2012 was one of the warmest and lower-yielding years in recent times (29 hectoliters per hectare), and they consider it a year apt for long aging. It has great concentration, but at the same time, the wine has higher acidity, which makes it very balanced. It aged sur lie for 56 months before it was disgorged. This is a little more oxidative of the three, with a little more development, more Mediterranean. It's very tasty.

    The 2015 Terrers is different blend than in the past and this year is composed of 58% Xarello, 32% Macabeo and 10% Monastrell, a red grape that behaves very well in warm vintages (like 2015), keeping acidity and providing an extra degree of freshness. The red grapes were fermented like whites (without skins), and because they liked what it added to the wine, they repeated it in 2016 but not in 2017 and 2018. This is fresh, mineral and austere and very remarkable for the style of the vintage. Like the rest of the range, it's bone-dry and very long and tasty. It feels more like a wine from a cool vintage than a warm one. Very complete. 148,000 bottles produced.

    The 2005 Reserva Particular de Recaredo was disgorged after 119 months in the bottle with the lees. This cuvée is a blend of 55% Xarello and 45% Macabeo from vineyards exceeding 50 years of age. All vineyards are organically and biodynamically farmed. The Xarello fermented in oak barrels and the base wine was put to referment in bottle with a cork stopper. This wine wants to keep the traditional blend of approximately same amounts of Xarello and Macabeo, which is more accessible and open, more aromatic than a pure Xarello. It might have had a little reduction, mineral perhaps, reminiscent of the diesel tones found in some Riesling. There are subtle smoke notes, yeasts, bread dough and baked brioche, incredibly subtle and elegant. 2005 was a warm and ripe year, but this wine is balanced and fresh, with a powerful palate and very tasty, with lively acidity that makes you salivate.

    Poboleda is in the northeast of the appellation, in the Siurana Valley at the foot of the Montsant Mountains, which provides a cooler microclimate with more rain, a longer cycle and later ripening than the southern part of Priorat. 2014 was a mild year complicated by rains in September, which required sorting grapes. This resulted in a 2014 1902 Centenary Carignan with half a point less alcohol than the cool 2013. This 2014 feels exactly like something in between the 2013 and 2015 vintages#with the freshness and tension of 2013 and the power and ripeness closer to 2015. It has a good compromise between power and elegance; it's concentrated but with tension and freshness, lots of tannins but not astringent. A very concentrated but harmonious Cariñena, one of the best in Priorat. Only 864 bottles were filled unfined and unfiltered in April 2016 after 16 months in new French oak barrels.

    2015 saw a return to dry and warm years like 2012, and the 2015 1902 Centenary Carignan was saved from the heat wave in July by 60 liters of rain in June. The destemmed grapes fermented with neutral yeasts in stainless steel, and the wine matured in three brand new French oak barrels for 16 months. The technical data lists almost seven grams of residual sugar, which surprised me. It's ripe, full-bodied and powerful, concentrated and juicy. It's a very powerful and heady Cariñena, with a polished texture. It feels tender and young. 864 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2017. I had the chance to taste a bottle of the never-released 2005, an experimental vintage from a year that could have some similarities with 2015, and the wine felt very balanced and still young, not showing any heat.

    The single-vineyard red 2016 Camino de Santa Cruz is a wine she wanted to call Rivas de Tereso, but she was not allowed, so she named it after the plot where the grapes grow. It's an aromatic red with intense aromas of violets and the hallmark signature of 2016, and has a surplus of minerality because of the high limestone content of the soils, with some Mediterranean undertones. With time in the glass, it reveals some classical Rioja notes of forest floor, truffle and mushrooms. It fermented in 300-liter amphorae and matured in well-seasoned, neutral 500-liter oak barrels for 12 months. The medium-bodied palate is elegant, and the tannins are round and make it very pleasant and approachable.

Indeed, a small amount (5%) of Cabernet Franc is blended into this Cabernet Sauvignon. This pretty wine is distinguished by an enhanced sense of definition, balance and detail. This is a great wine to pair with barbecued meats or steak. Some 10,000 bottles were produced.

    This is the inaugural release of a new single-vineyard wine from Loacker's Corte Pavone estate in Tuscany. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Corte Pavone Fiore del Vento (with only 1,800 bottles made) is a thickly endowed expression of Brunello that excels both in terms of bouquet and mouthfeel texture. This is a beautifully expressive wine in terms of aromas, with dark fruit, ripe cherry, blackberry, toasted almond, balsam herb and crushed mineral. You get the full Brunello package here, albeit on the modern and contemporary side of the style spectrum. Similar intensity and generosity are imparted to the palate, where the wine performs with balanced power and elegance. The wine could age, but it also drinks well straight out of the gate.

This is a mid-weight expression of the grape that is both accessible and easy to drink straight out of the gate. It ages in neutral oak for 12 months. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

    The 2014 Val d'Arno di Sopra BògginAnfora sees fruit sourced from a 4.5-hectare single vineyard of Sangiovese grapes. This plot also makes fruit for the blended red Torrione, but the central part of the vineyard goes through a careful selection process to make this wine. The fruit is organic. The wine is fermented in amphorae, some purchased in Spain and others using Tuscan clay from potters in Impruneta. This vintage saw a slightly shorter maceration time (compared to the 2013 vintage) only because the grape skins were more delicate in this difficult vintage. The results are very lively and tonic with bright ruby Sangiovese tones of cherry, moist earth and forest floor. I'd suggest a slightly shorter drinking window for this vintage.

    It's interesting to taste the 2014 Bòggina Anfora (Bògginanfora), Petrolo's Sangiovese done in amphora next to the same wine aged in oak. The amphora wine is initially a bit softer and creamier in its contours, but it also offers less development in the glass. Lavender, plum, menthol, sage and sweet herbs lead into the expressive finish. This is another very pretty wine from Petrolo and proprietor Luca Sanjust.

    Tenuta le Colonne is an estate I have never visited, but I feel like I have because I spent a good amount of time over by their neighbors during my last trip to Bolgheri. This property and Tenuta Argentiera look onto each other and are absolutely blessed by some of the most magnificent positioning possible along the Tuscan Coast. The vineyard that produces the 2015 Bolgheri Superiore spans from the seashore at five meters above sea level to 150 meters. This is a darkly concentrated wine with rich aromas of blackberry, ripe current, spice and tobacco. This is a structured, firm wine that sits squarely on the palate.

    The 2007 Le Piane is once again terrific. This dazzling red literally explodes onto the palate. Sweet red berries, rose petals, mint and mountain herbs are just some of the nuances that take shape in the glass. The warm vintage has given the wine a little more body than normal without overpowering the weightless, elegant style readers who know these wines are familiar with. The 2007 shows crystalline purity and fabulous balance from start to finish. It is a superb showing from proprietor Christoph Kunzli. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027.

    This vintage was not part of the official Le Piane Boca retrospective, but I had the chance to taste the wine during my visit to the estate. The 2015 Boca is a charming wine, with soothing and seductive fruit exuberance. Compared to the 2016 vintage (which I tasted from barrel), this 2015 edition is slightly more accessible and open. That's the characteristic of this vintage. It shows soft roundness and ripeness with extremely intact aromas of wild berry, licorice and candied raspberry.

    A bit lighter in color than the corresponding 2009, the garnet-red 2011 Jagini Zagersdorf opens pure, ripe and rich, but with precision and intensity. Full-bodied, mouth-filling, powerful and intense, but with a bit more finesse than 2009. Very long and with tension. I have to add, though, that the 2011, as well as the 2009, have significantly lost precision and freshness overnight on both nose and palate, whereas the finish was still fresh and tension-filled. Drink it quickly, as a 94-pointer which seems definitely more fun. I should also add that I did not have the same experience before and left the tasting table with a big question mark.

    From an old high-density plot with 50- to 100-year-old Blaufränkisch vines on the deep and loamy soils of Zagersdorf, the 2012 Jagini Zagersdorf is very pure, precise, fresh and spicy on the nose. Silky textured, with a ripe and fleshy fruit concentration, ripe tannins and great tension, this is a lovely pure and grippy red raised for three years in barrels of different sizes (500, 1500 and 1700 liters) and another year in bottle. The plot is planted with 8,000 vines per hectare (1.20 x 1.20 m) and the material is obviously from Hungary (no clones, just mass selections). Whereas the 2011 was only two years in barrels, the 2012 (and the 2013) remain three years due to the loamy soils which produces wines that develop only slowly.

    After four years in barrel, this complex and highly structured red is closer to a top Barolo than to most blaufränkisch. A very long, powerful finish with perfectly integrated tannins, suggesting serious aging potential. A joint venture by Moric and Schuster.
