    The latest release of Drappier's NV Brut Blanc de Quatre Blancs Quattuor#an unusual blend of Arbanne, Petite Meslier, Blanc Vrai and Chardonnay#opens in the glass with an attractive bouquet of honeycomb, crisp yellow orchard fruit, dried white flowers, marzipan and toasted walnuts. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and crisply fleshy, with a deep core of fruit, an elegant pinpoint mousse and tangy balancing acids, concluding with a long, nutty finish. This is a terrific rendition of this rare bottling, and it's more than a mere curio; indeed, it's well worth seeking out.

    The 2015 Prazo de Roriz is a roughly equal blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barroca, with small bits of Tinta Roriz and Tinta Amarela, aged for six months in used French oak. This is typically a good value. This might be my favorite in some time. There isn't a lot of concentration in the mid-palate and it isn't the type of wine you want to age for 20 years. It's not $50, either. It's a very nice bargain with many virtues. The fruit here is just gorgeous, vivid, pure and clean. The structure lifts it and delivers it beautifully to the palate. The texture is silky and the finish is just a bit tight. Overall, it is hard to lean up more on this since it doesn't have a lot of upside potential, but if you drink it over the next few years, you might like it even better than the score would suggest.

    Erich Meier's 2016 Pinot Noir Barrique from Zurich opens with a very delicate and refreshing bouquet of cherries with a touch of toast. Very nice purity here. The medium to full-bodied but elegant palate is silky textured, dense, round, lush and intensely fruity. The tannins are fine and knit to a fine tension. Although the finish is not spectacular in terms of power, concentration or complexity, this is a delicious Pinot for almost all opportunities. Tasted in February 2019.

    The dark colored 2015 Jenins Pinot Noir Sélection Barrique is a bit shut down right now, but it indicates deep, ripe, refined and elegant fruit on the nose that keeps the flinty terroir aromas alive and doesn't dominate the bouquet. Rich and with a velvety texture, the 2015 reflects the warm year as well as the terroir that keeps the freshness and mineral vitality even in dry and sunny vintages like this. The finish is powerful and intense, very long but pure, fresh and salty as well. I'd keep the wine for another 2 or 3 years, but I suppose you can serve it for a decade. The finish shows such good concentration, tight structure and mineral tension. The tannins, by the way, are legion, but they are fine and polymerizing with body and texture. A great Swiss Pinot indeed, which I terribly underrated on a very hot August day in 2017, but I am happily generous (but fair) with the 2015 today. Tasted in January 2019.

    The 2016 Jenins Pinot Noir Sélection Barrique (for details see the review of the 2017) offers an intense, warm and concentrated nose of ripe cherries, stewed strawberries and nougat and indicates a remarkable richness, elegance and harmony. The attack on the palate is generous and intense, but the wine remains elegant and fine, with vital tannins and a persistent mineral acidity and complexity. The long finish is compact, salty and powerful. This is a promising Pinot that was picked with tiny yields of just 400 grams per vine. It's more intense and fleshier than the refreshing and transparent 2017 but sweeter and more charming than the great 2015. In any case, the 2016 needs more time to show off. Bottled in March 2018; tasted in January 2019.

    From 30-year-old vines on chalky marl soils, the 2014 Oberflachs Auf der Mauer Pinot Noir has a very clear, pure and fine bouquet of red fruits along with slightly flinty terroir flavors. From Tom Litwan's Pinot trio, this is the most accessible wine: round, sweet and elegant, well balanced and finessed, with an intense and concentrated red fruit flavor in the long and persistent finish. This wine has more texture and charm than the Thalheim, and is more feminine compared to the Elfingen.

    The 2008 Pinot Grigio Dessimis is a huge departure from previous vintages. Talk about a wine that has completely been re-thought. For starters, the light pinkish hue is the result of a brief period of contact on the skins. Layers of sweet, perfumed fruit caress the palate as this silky, understated and totally classy Pinot Grigio opens up in the glass. The 2008 Dessimis shows exceptional balance and finesse, not to mention terrific personality. A final burst of red berries informs the long finish. Though delicious now, the Dessimis is an excellent choice for drinking as the weather warms up into the spring and summer. I loved it. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2013.

    Coming from a south-facing, 60-are vineyard on deep marl soils situated at 420 meters above sea level, the 2015 Pinot Blanc opens with ripe tropical fruit aromas intermixed with new oak and stirred yeast flavors. Fermented in stainless steel and oak vats, but aged in new and used barriques until the bottling in May, this is a full-bodied, round and very aromatic Pinot Blanc; it has a smooth acidity and an elegant texture. The 2015 is still made-up and lacks the purity and finessed freshness of a great wine, but the round and smooth-textured mouthfeel will be really pleasant for many consumers. The finish reveals a good grip and salinity, so the wine may improve with bottle age.

    The 2011 Nit De Nin is from a single vineyard, Mas d#en Cacador, a steep, north-facing vineyard in the village of Porrera on slate soils where vines are very old # all over 70 years of age. Yields in this vineyard were six hectoliters per hectare. The blend is 60% Garnacha, 40% Carinena, full-cluster fermented in demi-muids and aged for 10 months in barrel and eight months in foudre. It is very aromatic, flowery and mineral, reminiscent of a great Barolo, tar and roses, with telluric, earthy notes of peat and graphite intermixed with aromas of red, black and blue fruit. There#s more concentration and depth than in the Planetes, but equally great acidity that gives freshness and makes it very drinkable. It#s a savory, umami-driven wine, big, but it does not shout, it whispers, and you have to listen to it. A great effort for a very difficult vintage that could be drunk now or aged for a long time. Drink now-2024.

This is a terribly crisp and vital but also complex Neuburger with 12% alcohol and no added sulfur. Bottled unfiltered. Tasted October 2018.

    About ten producers make wine in the Valmaggiore cru in Roero (many of whom are reviewed here), and these wines get better each year I return to taste them. The 2016 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is particularly beautiful, thanks to ideal growing conditions during that year. The Sandrone family counts 3.5 hectares in this location. As an alternative to Barolo, this wine presents a soft and graceful side of Nebbiolo with delicate fruit nuances and distinct mineral etchings. Indeed, the wine is almost salty in taste. The sandy soils of Valmaggiore contribute to shaping the wine's lively ruby appearance and those tangy wild berry aromas. This wine is only aged in neutral oak.

In most vintages, the Valmaggiore is gracious to the point of being somewhat ethereal, but the 2016 is endowed with tremendous depth and a level of textural resonance I have never seen in this wine before. Expressive and layered, with tons of Nebbiolo character, the 2016 Valmaggiore is a total knock-out. Don't miss it!

The grapes are destemmed and pressed, and the juice put to ferment in an open-top barrel. It has a smoky touch with complexity, round with volume and good persistence.

    There are now new wines from Villabuena de Álava, so the 2017 NAHI Blanco has been joined by a red with the same name. It has volume and more clout and depth and keeps very good freshness. She tries to keep the oak to a minimum to keep the fruit and the origin. This 2017 feels a little shy and has a smoky touch, with floral notes and some citrus aromas and flavors, and it only has a sweet-ish touch on the finish. It's mostly Viura but has other white grapes, such as Malvasía Riojana and other old varieties like Calagraño and Rojal. It comes from five small plots, and they only produce 600 bottles, so yields were extremely low. It takes some time to take off in the glass, but it finally develops beautiful aromatics, including some mineral/diesel-like tones, which might give us an idea of how slowly the wine is going to develop in bottle. The vineyards are in the process of being recovered, so the volume might increase in the following years.

    From 30-year-old vines, fermented for one year in small barrels and aged for another six months in stainless steel (without the addition of sulfur), the 2013 Morillon Zieregg was bottled unfiltered in July 2015; it opens pure and mineral on the nose, and reflects its great shell limestone terroir in 450 meters altitude, with floral and lemon aromas. Compared to the corresponding Zieregg Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), this Morillon (Chardonnay) seems leaner and straighter, but is very intense and compact, well structured and powerful. The finish is long and grippy, a bit austere, but full of tension and potential. There is a great finesse and salivating salinity in this wine that is surely on the quality level of the Zieregg Sauvignons. Keep this "Grosse STK Lage" cru for another five to 15 years and don't miss to try it.

Round and very elegant on the palate, this is a rich, full-bodied and juicy Zieregg with a mouthful of fruit, fine acidity, firm tannins and a lingering finish. It is still a bit hard and tannic in the finish, but this will soften over the time. The wine is succulent, powerful and big and needs this structure. It has more flesh on the bones compared to the more mineral and pure Weissburgunder form the very stony part of the Zieregg. Tasted at the domaine in May 2017.

    The 2016 Ried Zieregg Morillon is from the oldest, southwest-facing part of the cru and was planted by Manfred Tement in the early 1980s on coral limestone. Today the vineyard is so well balanced that the yields are almost never reduced and the grapes are picked in just a single day. In 2016, the loss due to frost was "just" 50% (compared to 85% in Sulz), and the grapes came only from the very first shoots, which resulted in a long vegetation period. The 2016 includes one barrel of Pinot Blanc (10%) and opens pure, fine and fresh on the nose, with beautiful chalky notes and perfectly ripe fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a pure, vital and tensioned wine with great elegance, grip and lots of (almost peppery) spices and fine tannins.     From chalky marl soils and the warmest vineyard of the family (just 5 kilometers west of the domaine), the 2015 Sulz Morillon was fermented in 1,000-liter and 228-liter barrels. It offers a clear, fresh and aromatic bouquet with coolish earthy and lemon peel flavors and a hint of smoke. Very elegant and fresh on the palate, with piquant acidity and a crispy phenol structure, this is a full-bodied and persistent Chardonnay of remarkable elegance and powerful juiciness. The tannins are fine but grippy, and the aftertaste is chalky, aromatic and very long. I tasted this wine in May 2017 from a bottle that was filled the same day (LO 80517), whereas two-thirds of the production still remains in stainless steel.

    This wine is drinking beautifully right now. The 2012 Mille e Una Notte is a lot of fun to drink. You are treated to balanced aromas of black fruit and plum that are contrasted against spice, licorice and smoke. Nero d'Avola tends to show aromas of black olive, caper and aniseed in its natural state. You get some of those aromas here, but the black fruit is ultimately what shows strongest. This full-bodied red is endowed with rich texture and solid structure. It should continue to evolve over the next 10 years.

    The other single-vineyard Tempranillo is the 2011 Malleolus de Sancho Martín, always the more backward of the two. It is sourced from a small (0.84-hectare) single plot of vines planted in 1964 on chalk soils that provide more austere wines. It went through malo in French barriques, better suited for wines from chalky soils. Like the rest of the top of the range, it matured in French oak barrels for some 18 months before bottling. Although it feels a little reticent, it slowly develops notes of minerals, red and black fruit, spices and nicely integrated oak. The palate also shows good integration, balance and elegance, with chalky tannins that are very fine and a finish where the oak-related flavors are intermixed with subtle minerality, giving it a little salty sensation. It will be much better with some time in bottle. Only 2,500 bottles produced.

    The 2014 Malleolus de Sancho Martín is always the more backward of the two single-vineyard bottlings. It is sourced from a small (0.84-hectare) single plot of vines planted in 1964 on chalky soils that provide more austere wines. It fermented with yeasts selected from that same vineyard and it went through malolactic in French barriques, better suited for wines from chalky soils. Like the rest of the top of the range, it matured in French oak barrels for some 18 months before bottling. The limestone soils provide for a more austere profile and it also seems like the wine takes the oak in a different way and feels better integrated. The palate has the chalky mouthfeel of the tannins, dry and serious, not as exuberant as the Valderramiro, but more focused and precise, with a long life ahead of it.

    The 2016 Malleolus is a generous old-vine Tempranillo fermented with yeasts they have selected and aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, showcasing the ripe and deftly oaked style of the house. There is more freshness and better balance here compared with 2015; it's juicy, a little chewy and with fine-grained, abundant tannins. There is contained ripeness and moderate acidity. As with many of the wines here, I felt it could do with a little more acidity.
