The 2016 Friuli Isonzo Rive Alte Pinot Grigio Dessimis is classified as a white, but it is really a ramato, or copper in color, reflecting the real color of this grape's skins. Slightly reductive in nature, it brings out notes of cranberry and bright cassis with some white cherry as well. It was fermented in steel and aged on the lees in barrique. This is a very interesting wine that would make a good pairing with sliced porchetta. Exactly 52,286 bottles were released.

Vinified in used barriques for almost a year, the 2018 Pinot Blanc Gässli is the first release of this wine from the Schaffhausen AOC. The golden-yellow colored 2018 opens with an intense but elegant and even pure bouquet of very ripe but still precise white fruits intertwined with yeasty and some flinty notes. Full-bodied, rich and elegant on the palate, this Pinot Blanc is creamy textured, round and smooth yet complex and refreshingly mineral, with a fine grip and tension on the long, salty finish. Excellent. Tasted in October 2019.

In 1977, Sandrine's grandfather was one of the first vignerons to plant Païen (a.k.a. Heida or Savagnin) in the French-speaking part of the Valais. Sandrine still cultivates the old plot that is planted with green and yellow Savagnin. Her organically farmed 2018 Païen Les Bernunes opens with a deep, intense and concentrated bouquet with a deep layer of crushed stones and delicately aromatic ripe fruit aromas. Full-bodied, lush and round, with fine tannins rather than vibrant acidity like the Petite Arvine, this is rich and almost oily-textured Savagnin with a long and tannic finish that is still tight, with tannins that seem to be slightly greenish. This Païen has some features of red wine, like what you find in serious Gewürztraminers, and I'd recommend waiting another year or two before serving the 2018. Tasted in January 2020.

Christian Zündel's recent edition of his most famous red, the 2016 Merlot Orizzonte is dark in flavors#spicy, deep and concentrated, with some chocolate notes. This 2016 is perhaps closest to wines such as Masseto and other Merlot icon wines. This one, however, is still floral and alpine, with delicate acidity and finesse as well as fine tannins, a persistent finish and good concentration. This is more juicy, less stony, and it is very long and with good tension. Tasted at Brancaia in Zurich in October 2019.

The 2017 Nossa Calcário red is a Baga (although in the past, I've been told that among the old vines there are tiny amounts of other varieties) from three vineyards with an average vine age of 80 years, aged 18 months in mostly used French oak (but one 2,000-liter Slavonian cask). Soft and understated on opening, this is a wine that needs some time in the glass to show what it has. It is easy to take a quick taste and wonder where everything is. This is often subtle, but it is eventually so persistent that it makes you notice its virtues all the time. Come back in an hour. The wine expanded in the glass and developed more power while it dribbled terrific fruit over the palate. It is relatively sexy for a Baga, and it was better the next day, fleshing out and seeming even richer. The Baga here never seems terribly rustic, as it can often be. The texture is pure velvet.

The 2016 Nit de Nin Mas d#en Caçador was produced with grapes from 78- to 113-year-old vines in the Mas d'en Caçador vineyard in Porrera. It's a blend of Garnacha Negra, Garnacha Peluda and Cariñena with some 5% white grapes. It fermented with full clusters and indigenous yeasts in a 3,200-liter oak vat and matured in a similar 2,700-liter oak vat. It has great balance and is ripe and Mediterranean, without any excess; it's incredibly elegant and has character. In a way, it makes me think of a classical Châteauneuf, with fine tannins and subtle minerality. 4071 bottles and 60 magnums were filled in April 2019.

The 2017 Nit de Nin Mas d#en Caçador is a vintage they talk about like this: "We will remember this vintage as one of the most extreme of the decade, along with that of 2012. It is in years like these that the work we do in the field is rewarded. In spite of the climatic exceptionality, we have acidity and pH that seem like a miracle to us. Our vines did not suffer the severe frosts of this 2017." The wine has lower alcohol than the 2016 but the same pH of 3.3; insultingly young and tender, it doesn't feel like the wine had a long élevage in oak. It has kept very good freshness and great balance. It's tasty, pungent and long, with power and elegance and all the components to develop nicely in bottle.

The 2017 Nit de Nin La Coma d#en Romeu is from an extremely dry and early harvest that delivered just five hectoliters per hectare! That means they only produced 1,330 bottles from the 1.5 hectares of Garnacha on those slate terraces at 350 meters in altitude. It was bottled in April 2019. It has a beautiful and subtle nose that's very spicy (cloves and cumin, curry and pink pepper) and floral, with a palate that feels light but has great depth and inner power, with pungent flavors and subtle minerality.

On the palate, this is a lean but textured, beautifully fresh and citrusy Neuburger with a tight, fresh, salty, well-structured finish. This is a terribly crisp and vital but also complex Neuburger with 12% alcohol and no added sulfur. Bottled unfiltered. Tasted October 2018.

About ten producers make wine in the Valmaggiore cru in Roero (many of whom are reviewed here), and these wines get better each year I return to taste them. The 2016 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is particularly beautiful, thanks to ideal growing conditions during that year. The Sandrone family counts 3.5 hectares in this location. As an alternative to Barolo, this wine presents a soft and graceful side of Nebbiolo with delicate fruit nuances and distinct mineral etchings. Indeed, the wine is almost salty in taste. The sandy soils of Valmaggiore contribute to shaping the wine's lively ruby appearance and those tangy wild berry aromas. This wine is only aged in neutral oak.

The 2016 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is superb. In most vintages, the Valmaggiore is gracious to the point of being somewhat ethereal, but the 2016 is endowed with tremendous depth and a level of textural resonance I have never seen in this wine before. Expressive and layered, with tons of Nebbiolo character, the 2016 Valmaggiore is a total knock-out. Don't miss it!

With scorching heat and little rain overall, there was reason for worry during the 2017 growing season at large, but in the Roero zone by the banks of the Tanaro river, the hilly Valmaggiore vineyards received more rain than other parts of Piedmont, so these grapes did not suffer as much. Lovely notes of red rose and some herbal tones appear on the nose of the 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore, coupled with balsam, spice and rosemary. It's voluminous in the mouth, and while the Le Vigne Barolo tends to be the most floral and delicately ethereal of Sandrone's release, this bouquet is distinctive in its own way. It would be a nice pair with a mushroom risotto.

The 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is bright, fruity and absolutely delicious. The warm vintage seems to have given the Valmaggiore an extra kick of mid-palate sweetness, which is not a bad thing for a wine that can at times be a bit lean. Sweet red berry fruit and floral notes are nicely pushed forward. The 2017 will benefit from a few years in bottle, which will allow the aromatics to develop, but it is impeccable in its balance and super-classy, even in the early going.

Released six years after the harvest, the 2013 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is theoretically considered a new wine, although in practice this expression of Nebbiolo is part of the Sibi Paucis series of late releases from this estate. It is a beautiful expression that you appreciate more in the mouth than you do on the nose. Silky and elegant, the tannins have been softly integrated, and the overall effect is beautifully tempered and graceful. Its very apparent mineral sensations and budding tertiary complexity make it an important wine even when stacked against the other lofty achievements of Luciano Sandrone.

From 30-year-old vines, fermented for one year in small barrels and aged for another six months in stainless steel (without the addition of sulfur), the 2013 Morillon Zieregg was bottled unfiltered in July 2015; it opens pure and mineral on the nose, and reflects its great shell limestone terroir in 450 meters altitude, with floral and lemon aromas. Compared to the corresponding Zieregg Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), this Morillon (Chardonnay) seems leaner and straighter, but is very intense and compact, well structured and powerful. The finish is long and grippy, a bit austere, but full of tension and potential. There is a great finesse and salivating salinity in this wine that is surely on the quality level of the Zieregg Sauvignons. Keep this "Grosse STK Lage" cru for another five to 15 years and don't miss to try it.

The 2016 Ried Zieregg Morillon is from the oldest, southwest-facing part of the cru and was planted by Manfred Tement in the early 1980s on coral limestone. Today the vineyard is so well balanced that the yields are almost never reduced and the grapes are picked in just a single day. In 2016, the loss due to frost was "just" 50% (compared to 85% in Sulz), and the grapes came only from the very first shoots, which resulted in a long vegetation period. The 2016 includes one barrel of Pinot Blanc (10%) and opens pure, fine and fresh on the nose, with beautiful chalky notes and perfectly ripe fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a pure, vital and tensioned wine with great elegance, grip and lots of (almost peppery) spices and fine tannins. You are treated to balanced aromas of black fruit and plum that are contrasted against spice, licorice and smoke. Nero d'Avola tends to show aromas of black olive, caper and aniseed in its natural state. You get some of those aromas here, but the black fruit is ultimately what shows strongest. This full-bodied red is endowed with rich texture and solid structure. It should continue to evolve over the next 10 years.

This was a terrific vintage in Sicily that did not see the below average temperatures and heavy rainfall that plagued the rest of mainland Italy. Instead, the growing season was characterized by balanced temperatures and steady sunshine. The fruit has matured beautifully here, showing blackberry, ripe cherry and plum. Tangy leather and spice add complexity to the wine. This is a full-bodied red with beautiful textual richness.

Donnafugata's showcase wine is the always delightful Mille e Una Notte, with 40,000 bottles released in this vintage. The 2015 Sicilia Mille e Una Notte is a beautifully saturated and dark wine, with an elegant full-bodied style and plenty of black fruit and plum that shines bright. The quality of those primary aromas is radiant and fresh. The wine shows its complexity in a second wave of spice, leather and black olive. The blend is mostly Nero d'Avola with Petit Verdot, Syrah and other grapes, and the wine rests in oak barrel for 14 months. This vintage is particularly rich, soft and exuberant.

91/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Feb 2020
The 2017 Merlot Terraferma opens with a terribly clear and fresh bouquet of red and slightly dark berry and (frozen) cherry, with floral, earthy and alpine violet aromas. This bouquet is pure and elegant like that of a white wine. Lush, precise and elegant on the palate, this is a fruity-elegant, silky-textured, fresh and refined Merlot from the Alps. There is no oak, no extraction, no flesh#just silky and pure. This is a very delicate Merlot and a typical Zündel. Absolutely delicious, even with fish. If you like red wines from the Loire or even simply like Pinot Noir, you will possibly fall in love with this Swiss Merlot too. You should at least give her a chance. Tasted at Brancaia in Zurich in October 2019.

The 2015 Merlot Paradies opens to intense and concentrated aromas of ripe berry and cherry on the nose that also delivere coolish earthy and even floral notes. Juicy and remarkably refined on the palate, this is an elegant and energetic Merlot with delicate tannins, a rather silky texture and good intensity, grip and tension. It's a surprisingly good and vital but also complex Merlot from St Gallen. Tasted in Zurich in December 2019.

    Parker 92-93/100

    92-93/100 Robert Parker Feb 2020
The 2018 Malanser Merlot shows a dark purple color and opens with an intense and concentrated, perfectly ripe sour cherry and dark berry aroma intertwined with spicy-crystalline terroir, toast and tobacco notes. A wonderfully precise and reductive style. Silky and very intense on the palate, this is a full-bodied, very elegant and balanced yet tight and finessed Merlot with remarkably fine acidity and tannin structure, great purity and concentration and a clear, tart, fresh, long and aromatic finish. Lots of blueberries on the nose and aftertaste. Tasted as a sample in February 2020.
