    Carmelo Bonetta is a Sicilian renegade. His radiant personality doesn't just fill a room: It fills a stadium. It is always a pleasure to recognize that exuberance and good cheer in the wines of Baglio del Cristo di Campobello. The 2013 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Lu Patri is a dark and rich red wine with pretty concentration and loads of dark blackberry, cherry and plum. Those generous fruit tones are matched by oaky flavors of vanilla and exotic spice. There's a bit of red earth and dark mineral in there as well. The wine is soft and velvety in texture.

    This is a nicely balanced but subdued (in a good way) expression of Sicily's mighty Nero d'Avola grape. The 2014 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Lu Patri exhibits uniform ripeness. This is a very important quality of this vintage. Because the fruit is not too ripe, you can make out the smaller aromatic details that might otherwise be lost. Those details include wild cherry, rose petal marmalade and sweet tobacco. This wine rests in French barrel for 14 months.

    Including the 2015 Los Acilates, I had two vintages to taste of the single-vineyard red that comes from a plot that is different than the rest of the estate. It's a north-facing, steep slope rich in limestone and was planted with well-adapted Portuguese grapes#Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira Preta#in 2003. Not as hot as 2014 but still a warm and dry vintage, 2015 saw an early harvest with very healthy grapes. The grapes fermented in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts, followed by malolactic in barrique. The wine matured in well-seasoned small 500-liter French oak foudres for 12 months (they have shortened the oak aging of this wine). This is the finest vintage of this bottling I've tried so far; it has very good balance and a mixture of red and black berry fruit and floral undertones. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Amazing for the zone and for a vintage like 2015. I really believe in these grapes here. 7'000 bot

It's juicy and long on the finish, where it picks up hints of licorice and baking spices. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

    Grapes from younger vines are used for the 2016 Les Crestes, which is also released earlier. It's a blend of Garnacha with 20% Cariñena and 10% Syrah matured in second use French oak barrels for eight months. 2016 was a dry growing season saved by a cooler September with some rain, which resulted in a relaxed and long harvest of grapes with good ripeness and acidity. It's young, tender and aromatic, a gentle Priorat with a juicy palate and a fresh personality. Really attractive and pleasant.

The wine ages in tonneaux for one year and is then transferred into large oak casks where it integrates and finds the excellent balance you taste here.

    From chalk and silex soils, the golden-yellow colored 2006 Le Mont Aimé Premier Cru Coeur de Terroir has a very particular bouquet for the Côte des Blancs and needs a while to get rid of its rather reductive style (36% was fermented in small oak barrels). Concentrated citrus flavors evolve after a while in the glass. This could also be a ripe and flinty Chablis with bubbles. On the palate, this is a beautifully elegant, refined and rather crystalline Champagne, and its linear elegance is pretty unique. The finish is pure, salty and rather piquant but ripe. This is a fascinating wine that I perhaps slightly underrated in my review from two years ago (in Issue #225). This sample was disgorged in July 2017, about 2.5 years after the one I tasted in early 2016 for my previous review. The dosage is 3.5 grams per liter.     The 2005 Le Mesnil sur Oger Grand Cru Coeur de Terroir is a 40% barrel-fermented Blanc de Blancs Brut that was disgorged in April 2015, exactly nine years after the tirage (dosage of five grams). White golden color, the deep and fresh aromas on the nose indicate great purity and clear expression of fruit from a chalky terroir. This is a full-bodied, rich and complex, yet also pure, lean and impressively structured Champagne. It is full of tension, grip and mineral expression. The lemon-fresh finish is enormously long and complex, and the wine is perfectly dosaged. Highly recommended.

    Sourced from five plots in the village, the Chardonnay for the 2006 Le Mesnil sur Oger Grand Cru Coeur de Terroir was entirely vinified in small oak barrels. It was kept on the lees until the bottling in April 2007 and disgorged in July 2017 as Extra Brut (with a dosage of four to five grams per liter). This wine offers a very deep, perfectly ripe, pure, fresh and elegant bouquet of great complexity, featuring ripe fruit aromas that are intertwined with iodine and concentrated citrus notes. Almost steely in the background but overall generous, the 2006 is highly elegant and complex, with a lovely oxidative touch and good structure. Pure, fresh and finessed on the palate, this is a very elegant and balanced yet tensioned grand cru with a long, aromatic, perfectly round and accessible finish. This can be cellared for at least 10 to 15 years if you like matured Champagne. There is a lot of life and vitality in this cuvée. Great finish#fresh

    A champion in quality-to-price ratio, the red 2013 Lalama wants to replicate the traditional wine produced as a field blend that is mostly Mencía with some 10% a myriad other varieties#Brancellao, Mouratón, Sousón and Garnacha Tintorera#from many different vineyards on different soils, altitudes and expositions. The destemmed and crushed grapes fermented in 2500-3500 and 4500-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic in 300-liter barriques where it was kept for 13 months followed by a further seven months in oak vat. It has an explosive and captivating nose, an explosion of wild berries and herbs, with just a creamy touch and some spices. Yields were also low because they lost some 62% of the grapes to hail, and the wine is concentrated and powerful, quite fruit-driven and expressive, juicy and chewy. It has some spicy and smoky undertones and a dry, long finish. This is a modern and luxurious style of Ribeira Sacra.

    The 2015 Lacima is really impressive. It's a serious, balsamic and reticent red with a faithful expression of rocks through its blend of 70% Mencía with 20% Brancellao and 5% each Mouratón and Sousón. The grapes were very healthy, and the crop was quite small and concentrated. It fermented with natural yeasts in open-top 500-liter French oak vats and had a long élevage of 17 months in used barriques followed by no less than 14 months in bottle before it was released. It combines power with elegance, and it has concentration and nuance and feels quite young and lively. It's tasty, clean and long, and it seems to have good balance and all that is needed for a long and positive development in bottle. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Lacima so far.

    The 2016 La Zarcita is a blend of Trincadeira Preta, Touriga Nacional and Garnacha Tintorera grapes from limestone, clay and sand soils. In 2015 they also planted red Garnacha with the idea to include it in future vintages of this blend. There was more rain than average in 2016, and that allowed the ripening cycle to be longer, which is something really good in a region like this. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic and eight months in new and second use 500-liter French oak barrels. It's very floral and perfumed, with a captivating nose. It's still a straightforward red but with more depth than in previous vintages and especially great freshness. 2016 seems like a very good vintage in the zone. The palate is approachable and soft, with very good acidity. And it's a bargain! 30,000 bottles produced.

    A varietal Garnacha from Riva de Tereso, the 2017 La Dula comes from a small 80-year-old plot planted in 1944, so production is extremely low. It's bottled unoaked and matured in amphorae to see what the pure grape delivers. It's fruit-driven and shows some ripeness from a warm and dry year. This tends to have very high acidity, so the grapes are picked late to achieve good ripeness. It fermented in tinaja (amphorae), where it's kept for a few months and then is bottled early. There are perfumed notes, and something herbal/wild that I like. The palate reveals fine-grained tannins and clean flavors. Only 670 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018.

    The elegance, finesse and nuance of the 2015 La Dama is simply irresistible. It's ethereal, perfumed, elegant and complex (rose petals, orange peel, wild herbs...), even if it's extremely young. It's bright ruby, with great purity and detail, transparent and full of energy. It is harmonious and nicely textured, with chalky tannins and a stony sensation. It's more powerful than it feels and has the stuffing and balance to develop nicely in bottle. This is truly sensational, full of mineral energy.

This is a stunning wine with excellent engineering and execution. This is definitely a wine I will remember.

    The 2014 Ilatraia is a terrific wine that represents a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Cabernet Franc. This is a darkly saturated and rich Tuscan blend that delivers so much pleasure on all levels. There is softness, intensity, complexity and length. This is a stunning wine with excellent engineering and execution. This is definitely a wine I will remember.

    This is a very well done red from the vintage with blackberry, dark currant and hints of rose petal aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, very fine texture and a pretty finish. Very fine for the vintage. Drink or hold.

There's a lot to enjoy here.

    The 2014 Il Caberlot is a beautifully executed wine with an inky dark or otherwise impenetrable appearance. The bouquet shows decisive Cabernet-adjacent aromas of super dense blackberry with black olive and charred rosemary twig. The wine delivers immediate power and intensity with excellent focus and sharpness. Perhaps the mouthfeel is a touch thinner and shorter in this vintage (as is to be expected), but given its overall opulence, this is a welcome characteristic. This wine is usually only available in magnums.

    Podere Il Carnasciale's 2014 Il Caberlot is all class. Sophisticated and medium in body in this vintage, it possesses striking aromatic depth and nuance to match its decidedly midweight personality. Layers of bright, red-toned fruit, blood orange and cinnamon add to the wine's decidedly exotic personality. In some vintages, Caberlot is more overt and exuberant, but the 2014 is a cool, reserved wine that needs time in bottle for its inner sweetness to fully emerge. Even at this early stage, though, it is striking.
