There is tons of length here to go along with the wine#s sumptuous, generous personality. This is probably not a long-term ager, but it should drink beautifully over the mid-term. Ilatraia is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese and 10% Petit Verdot.

    The red 2017 Horizonte de Exopto is a traditional blend of Tempranillo with 10% each Garnacha and Graciano, but now not all of grapes come from the village of Ábalos#since 2016, they have added two plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured 50/50 in 600-liter demi-muids and 225-liter barriques for one year. The wine is surprisingly fresh, expressive and aromatic and has a touch of black pepper, perhaps because there are more grapes from higher-altitude vineyards that didn't suffer the frost, and the result might be fresher than some wines from 2016 or 2015. The move to bigger barrels and less oak seems to have paid back with much better integration of the wood and additional nuance. A great effort for the vintage and a bit of a surprise#lighter and less concentrated but more drinkable. 9,000 bottles were filled in November 2018.

    The white has the same name as the entry-level red, and I tasted the 2017 Horizonte de Exopto Blanco. For the white, they have added the grapes from one more plot in the village of Ábalos that's planted exclusively with white grapes (the rest are planted with a majority of red and only individual white vines), and production has grown to 6,000 bottles. Produced in a slightly oxidative way, it's mostly Viura and 10% each Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, fermented together in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and finished in barriques. The élevage was in used 225-liter barrels (60% of the volume), concrete eggs (25% and used for the first time) and French oak demi-muids (the remaining 15%) and lasted 12 months. The new thing is the addition of the concrete egg, which seems to have added freshness, tension and aromatic complexity.     The second vintage of the top-of-the-range single-vineyard Tempranillo is the 2015 Horcajo, which reached 15% alcohol in a warm and dry year like 2015. It went through malolactic in barrique and matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. This is the most powerful and concentrated of their wines; it's quite dark and has aromas of dark fruit, roasted coffee and toast with an earthy touch and a hint of smoke. The palate is full bodied, round and lush, with decadent flavors, baroque, with lush fruit and generous oak in a very showy style.

    From gneiss soils covered with white and red sand and finally loess, the 2015 Engabrunner Stein 1ÖTW Grüner Veltliner is a very clear, deep and flinty flavored wine with superripe white-fruit aromas on the nose. Rich and elegant on the palate. this is a generously fruity but precise and tension-filled Veltliner with a lush texture and a precisely mineral piquancy in the pure and salty finish. An impressive Veltliner full of grip and aging potential. Due to hail damage yields were very, very low in 2015 and only 4'000 liters of the 2015 Stein have been bottled from 5.25 hectares of vines. It was the deadline day of this issue (June 3) when I got the chance to taste the 2015s of Mister Veltliner Bernhard Ott, one of the leading wine estates in the Wagram region, if not the whole Danube valley.     Coming from gneiss soils covered with white and red sand and finally loess, the 2016 Engabrunner Stein 1ÖTW is Ott's one and only Kamptal Grüner Veltliner. Intensely citrus-colored, the wine opens with a clear and flinty bouquet of perfectly ripe white fruits and exciting citrus aromas. Round, finessed and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, complex and mineral Veltliner with intense and lingering fruit aromas that are almost tropical. Although the 2016 is a bit too sweet for my taste, and also lunch or dinner, it is well structured due to the fine acidity and perfectly integrated minerality. Mind, though, that as soon as the CO2 has disappeared, the wine will taste sweeter than in the beginning. Tasted as a sample at Schloss Gobelsburg in July 2017.

    Picked on September 28, Ott's 2017 Grüner Veltliner Ried Feuersbrunner Spiegel 1ÖTW is very clear, subtle and elegant on the distinctive nose. In early September 2018, the nose displayed white stone fruits intertwined with refreshing, refining gravelly and floral notes. Later that month, the wine showed tropical notes on the intensely fruity, elegant, sexy nose. Full-bodied, rich and dense on the palate, with intense, lush, concentrated fruit and vitalizing, fine acidity, this is a very persistent and powerful Veltliner with a very long, forward, mineral and tensioned finish. This is a powerful but elegant giant and needs time to gain finesse and transparency. The elegance here, however, is remarkable. Tasted twice in early and late September 2018.

    The 2016 Ried Steinertal Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is from the coolest Grüner Veltliner single vineyard of the Pichler family, with sandy gneiss and granite soils. The 2016 opens with a clear and fresh but also intense fruit aroma that is still a bit discreet on the nose. The attack on the palate is really fresh and piquant due to remarkable acidity. The wine is pure and mineral, shows a good phenolic grip and reveals white fruit aromas like yellow-skinned apples. The finish is clear, fresh and grippy and shows some attractive crispy fruit flavors. This is a lean, elegant, well balanced, medium to full-bodied Grüner Veltliner with less than 13% alcohol. Tasted as a sample in early July 2017. Scheduled for bottling in late July 2017.

Still very young but balanced, with vivacious acidity and good tannins, this 2016 should have a great aging potential.
