The 2014 Il Caberlot is a beautifully executed wine with an inky dark or otherwise impenetrable appearance. The bouquet shows decisive Cabernet-adjacent aromas of super dense blackberry with black olive and charred rosemary twig. The wine delivers immediate power and intensity with excellent focus and sharpness. Perhaps the mouthfeel is a touch thinner and shorter in this vintage (as is to be expected), but given its overall opulence, this is a welcome characteristic. This wine is usually only available in magnums.

Podere Il Carnasciale's 2014 Il Caberlot is all class. Sophisticated and medium in body in this vintage, it possesses striking aromatic depth and nuance to match its decidedly midweight personality. Layers of bright, red-toned fruit, blood orange and cinnamon add to the wine's decidedly exotic personality. In some vintages, Caberlot is more overt and exuberant, but the 2014 is a cool, reserved wine that needs time in bottle for its inner sweetness to fully emerge. Even at this early stage, though, it is striking.

The red 2015 Horizonte de Exopto is a traditional blend of Tempranillo with 10% each Garnacha and Graciano, all from the village of Ábalos, including the Garnacha that previously was sourced from Rioja Baja. The aim is to show the character of the Sonsierra with freshness, balance, elegance and length provided by the limestone soils. It fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, with destemmed and lightly crushed grapes, and a post-fermentation maceration of one week. It matured 50/50 in 600-liter demi-muids and 225-liter barriques, 20% of them new, for 12 months. It's very perfumed, expressive, open, long and complete, with good ripeness but without any excess. There is good definition, with fine tannins on the palate and better-integrated oak than some years ago. This is sourced from the same vineyards as the white, which is why the wines share the same name. 10,000 bottles were filled in November 2016.

The red 2017 Horizonte de Exopto is a traditional blend of Tempranillo with 10% each Garnacha and Graciano, but now not all of grapes come from the village of Ábalos#since 2016, they have added two plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured 50/50 in 600-liter demi-muids and 225-liter barriques for one year. The wine is surprisingly fresh, expressive and aromatic and has a touch of black pepper, perhaps because there are more grapes from higher-altitude vineyards that didn't suffer the frost, and the result might be fresher than some wines from 2016 or 2015. The move to bigger barrels and less oak seems to have paid back with much better integration of the wood and additional nuance. A great effort for the vintage and a bit of a surprise#lighter and less concentrated but more drinkable. 9,000 bottles were filled in November 2018.

This is a beautiful play between fresh blackberries, violets and lavender and dried meat, vanilla and spices. Iodine, licorice and tar all in there, too. Full body, muscular yet grainy tannins and layer after layer of plush fruit, wrapped up neatly in tangy acidity. Drink in 2022.

The one white (so far) is the 2015 Horizonte de Exopto Blanco, produced with grapes from the scattered white vines intermixed with the reds in the old vineyards they work in Ábalos (12 different plots), usually in the poorer soils to balance yields. It's produced in a slightly oxidative way with a majority of Viura, 10% Garnacha Blanca and 5% Malvasía Riojana along with some other white varieties, all fermented together. Fermentation started in stainless steel without added yeasts and finished in barriques with an élevage of 12 months in contact with the lees, which were stirred during the first six months in barrel. There are some citrus and caramel aromas with good ripeness, and in a warmer and more Mediterranean vintage like 2015, it goes through malolactic, so the style of cooler years (2013, 2014, 2016) and warmer years is different. Here, there is more volume and more texture, but to keep the austerity of the soils, they look for freshne

Dry and focused on the palate, offering concentrated orchard and citrus fruit, honey and buttered toast flavors and a subtle touch of honeysuckle. Closes smoky, tight and long, leaving a suave floral note behind.

The white has the same name as the entry-level red, and I tasted the 2017 Horizonte de Exopto Blanco. For the white, they have added the grapes from one more plot in the village of Ábalos that's planted exclusively with white grapes (the rest are planted with a majority of red and only individual white vines), and production has grown to 6,000 bottles. Produced in a slightly oxidative way, it's mostly Viura and 10% each Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, fermented together in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and finished in barriques. The élevage was in used 225-liter barrels (60% of the volume), concrete eggs (25% and used for the first time) and French oak demi-muids (the remaining 15%) and lasted 12 months. The new thing is the addition of the concrete egg, which seems to have added freshness, tension and aromatic complexity. In fact, the wine makes me think of a cool vintage (and it was not), and the wine is fresh and has great ac

Rich and elegant on the palate. this is a generously fruity but precise and tension-filled Veltliner with a lush texture and a precisely mineral piquancy in the pure and salty finish. An impressive Veltliner full of grip and aging potential. Due to hail damage yields were very, very low in 2015 and only 4'000 liters of the 2015 Stein have been bottled from 5.25 hectares of vines. It was the deadline day of this issue (June 3) when I got the chance to taste the 2015s of Mister Veltliner Bernhard Ott, one of the leading wine estates in the Wagram region, if not the whole Danube valley. Coming from gneiss soils covered with white and red sand and finally loess, the 2016 Engabrunner Stein 1ÖTW is Ott's one and only Kamptal Grüner Veltliner. Intensely citrus-colored, the wine opens with a clear and flinty bouquet of perfectly ripe white fruits and exciting citrus aromas. Round, finessed and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, complex and mineral Veltliner with intense and lingering fruit aromas that are almost tropical. Although the 2016 is a bit too sweet for my taste, and also lunch or dinner, it is well structured due to the fine acidity and perfectly integrated minerality. Mind, though, that as soon as the CO2 has disappeared, the wine will taste sweeter than in the beginning. Tasted as a sample at Schloss Gobelsburg in July 2017.

Picked on September 28, Ott's 2017 Grüner Veltliner Ried Feuersbrunner Spiegel 1ÖTW is very clear, subtle and elegant on the distinctive nose. In early September 2018, the nose displayed white stone fruits intertwined with refreshing, refining gravelly and floral notes. Later that month, the wine showed tropical notes on the intensely fruity, elegant, sexy nose. Full-bodied, rich and dense on the palate, with intense, lush, concentrated fruit and vitalizing, fine acidity, this is a very persistent and powerful Veltliner with a very long, forward, mineral and tensioned finish. The 2016 opens with a clear and fresh but also intense fruit aroma that is still a bit discreet on the nose. The attack on the palate is really fresh and piquant due to remarkable acidity. The wine is pure and mineral, shows a good phenolic grip and reveals white fruit aromas like yellow-skinned apples. The finish is clear, fresh and grippy and shows some attractive crispy fruit flavors. This is a lean, elegant, well balanced, medium to full-bodied Grüner Veltliner with less than 13% alcohol. The 2015 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Loibner Steinertal is a medium to full-bodied wine with a very nice and mineral acidity and a refreshing bright fruit flavor. Tightly woven but very elegant and with grip. Very promising.

The 2016 Ried Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner Smaragd has a deep, clear and flinty flavored bouquet of ripe, concentrated and very well defined white and yellow-fleshed fruits. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich, round and charming but also refined, elegant and tightly woven Grüner Veltliner with power, good tannins and mineral grip. It is a generous and rather smooth Veltliner compared to the fresh and finessed Steinertal or the firmly structured Liebenberg. Its finish is long, intense and powerful and reveals tropical fruit aromas. Tasted in July 2017, one week after the bottling.

The 2016 Ried Steinertal Grüner Veltliner Smaragd has a coolish and flinty flavored nose of perfectly ripe and concentrated white and yellow-fleshed fruits. Full-bodied and juicy on the palate, this Veltliner balances its richness and fruit intensity with finesse, freshness, fine minerals and tannins. The finish is well structured, long, intense and powerful. I'd keep the 2016 for another three or four years before I'd serve it. Tasted in July 2017, one week after the bottling.

Helles Gelb, Silberreflexe. Feiner Hauch von Marillen, reifer gelber Apfel, feine tabakige Nuancen, dunkle Mineralität. Komplex, saftig, engmaschig, finessenreiche Struktur, salzige Nuancen, bleibt sehr lange haften, pfeffriger Nachhall, sicheres Reifepotenzial.

The 2015 Loibner Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Vinothekfülllung is clear and intense on the nose, very ripe, bit still precise and smoky in its white-fruit aromas. Full-bodied, rich and elegant this is a velvet-textured wine with a lot of power and a bit of bitter flavors in the finish.

    92-93/100 Punkte Vinous Feb 2017
Originating as usual (in order of magnitude) from Kreutles, Loibenberg and Kellerberg, this opens with musky floral perfume, then projects aromatically as well as on the palate a dark, savory richness of Burley tobacco allied to bittersweet, earthy roasted parsnip and rutabaga. Full, expansive and subtly oily in feel, yet with what Knoll senior concurs is a surprising sense of animation and tangy, peachy primary juiciness for a Vinothek bottling, this finishes with accents of smoky black tea, iodine, and spicy Madagascar peppercorn.

From the warm and loessy middle part of the cru, the 2017 Ried Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner Smaragd offers a very delicate, fine bouquet of ripe, precise fruit aromas intertwined with flinty aromas. Intense and lush on the palate, this is a generous, very elegant, stimulating, salty-piquant, almost racy Smaragd with power, finesse, tension and vitality. Proidl's 2016 Riede Ehrenfels 1ÖTW Senftenberger Grüner Veltliner is deep, intense and smoky on the nose, displaying a very aromatic bouquet of ripe peaches, nectarines and mangoes intermixed with herbal and crushed stone aromas. Full-bodied, rich and powerful on the palate, this is a generous but elegant and mineral Ehrenfels with fine tannins. The finish is long and aromatic, well structured, stimulating, fresh and salty, revealing mango flavors. This 2016 could become a gorgeous wine one day but the primary fruit aromas are still prominent and similar to Pellingen, whereas on the palate the Ehrenfels is deeper, more powerful in its structure and persistence. This exceptional terroir dominates the variety but not the fruit, which seems to be a concession to the Austrian taste which is pretty new for this formerly uncompromising domain. Tasted as a sample in July 2017.
