Intensives, leuchtendes Strohgelb.

Very pale straw-green. Perfumed, pristine aromas typical of Pinot Bianco (white flowers, chamomile, beeswax, white peach) on the inviting nose. Then soft, subdued and mellow in a style typical of Pinot Bianco when ripe grapes are used, displaying varietally accurate flavors similar to the aromas. Closes bright and fresh, with a hint of salinity at the back.

92/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Apr 2012
The 2010 Trossos Tros Blanc is a pure Garnacha Blanca from 90-year-old, biodynamically farmed vines and is aged in 50% French oak. It has a creamy, almond and nougat-scented bouquet that stylishly combines the aromatic qualities of the grape variety with the new oak. The palate is harmonious, smooth and creamy, with pure scents of white chocolate, fresh apricot and quince leading to a delineated, precise, elegant finish. Excellent. Drink now-2016+.

(100% garnatxa blanca, aged for ten months in large French oak casks): Light yellow-gold. Pungent, highly perfumed aromas of candied peach, poached pear, honey and vanilla, with a floral overtone and a hint of ginger. Fleshy and expansive on the palate, offering gently sweet orchard fruit flavors and a bracing lemon pith quality. Finishes smooth, sappy and long, with lingering spiciness.

Vivid orange-pink. Deep-pitched cherry, red berry and lavender aromas, along with suggestions of blood orange and garrique. Stains the palate with concentrated, mineral-tinged raspberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that show sharp delineation and spicy lift. In a distinctly powerful style but in no way lacking for finesse, delivering strong, red-fruit-driven thrust on an impressively long, mineral-tinged finish.

Welcome to the first rosato to join the Donnafugata family of wines. The 2018 Etna Rosato Sul Vulcano is an unoaked Nerello Mascalese that opens to a very pretty, pale pink color with soft tones of wild berry, apple and mint tea. Delicate mineral sensations give the wine beautiful focus and clarity. The presentation is excellent all around. I could see this as a great accompaniment to a Moroccan-style chicken tagine.

Bright orange-tinged pale pink. Captivating aromas of raspberry, pomegranate, wisteria and minerals. Then multilayered and dense, with zingy acidity lifting the mineral red fruit and floral flavors. Finishes long, sweet and suave. An outstanding Rosato characterized by great precision and sneaky concentration. Made with 100% Nerello Mascalese via cold maceration in press for 6-12 hours at 10°C followed by fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. A new wine from Donnafugata, and I would say they have a real winner on their hands. Well done.

Dark cherry, spice, menthol, licorice and espresso all run through this mid-weight, striking Rosso. All the elements are impeccably balanced, in a pliant, racy Rosso that delivers the goods. (all de-stemmed fruit; fermented in stainless steel tanks and then aged for a year in neutral French oak barrels) Youthful violet color. A highly perfumed bouquet displays an array of red and blue fruits and fresh flowers, along with mineral and allspice accents. Juicy and appealingly sweet, offering vibrant black raspberry and cherry flavors and a subtle licorice nuance that builds with air. Parker 94+/100

94+/100 Punkte Robert Parker June 2019
The 2015 San Vicente was produced with 18 hectares of Tempranillo Peludo, a particular strain of Tempranillo planted from a massal selection in 1985 in the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The destemmed grapes fermented in French oak vats, and the wine matured in new oak barrels (90% French, 10% American) for 20 months. This really reminds me of the initial vintages of this wine, 1991 and 1994, but with the wisdom of the older vines, it feels very integrated and compact, in line with the 2005. It's a serious and balanced wine that's harmonious and has incipient complexity, with aromatic herbs and spices and a mixture of red and black fruit. It's elegant and medium-bodied, with fine-grained tannins, good grip and a remarkable finish. This has oak, but it feels quite integrated. It has the stuffing and balance to develop nicely in bottle. 2015 is behaving much better than expected.

A highly perfumed bouquet evokes oak-spiced dark berries, potpourri, vanilla and incense, along with a smoky mineral overtone. Sappy, plush and seamless on the palate, offering deeply concentrated raspberry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that deepen steadily on the back half. The impressively long, spice-tinged finish displays sneaky tannins, outstanding clarity and an echo of candied rose.

A penetratingly pungent and amazingly Muscat-like nose combines sage and oregano with orange blossom, apricot and tangerine. (There is still a faint chive-like post-fermentative, post-sulfuring note, but it isn#t disturbing.) The satiny, lusciously fruited midpalate gains invigorating and complementary counterpoint from zesty impingements of orange peel and hickory nut. Fifty grams of residual sugar are wholly supportive. The finish delivers lots of refreshment as well as a load of crushed stone.

The 2015 Riesling Smaragd Dürnsteiner Kellerberg displays a clear, ripe and concentrated bouquet of white fruits intermixed with crystalline flavors of the weathered gneiss and granite soils. Full-bodied, piquant and full of tension, this is a stunningly clear and refreshing Smaragds from a warm year. The alcohol is well hidden and the finish is very long and vibrantly fresh. There is a lot of mineral tension and music in this wine that should be cellared for another five or six years.

    95-96/100 Punkte Vinous Feb 2017
A pungently smoky, incisive, savory mélange of sage, dark tobacco and black pepper is allied to ripe peach and garlanded with heliotrope in a head-turningly intense nose. That full range of elements reprises on a polished palate, whose textural caress and sweet sense of ripeness are combined with welcome, tangy, chewy counterpoint of peach skin and a refreshingly juicy squirt of fresh lime. The finish offers a mouthwateringly prolonged, kaleidoscopic interaction of fruity, savory and smoky elements plenty rich, yet with rare cut and animation for its vintage.

About ten producers make wine in the Valmaggiore cru in Roero (many of whom are reviewed here), and these wines get better each year I return to taste them. The 2016 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is particularly beautiful, thanks to ideal growing conditions during that year. The Sandrone family counts 3.5 hectares in this location. As an alternative to Barolo, this wine presents a soft and graceful side of Nebbiolo with delicate fruit nuances and distinct mineral etchings. Indeed, the wine is almost salty in taste. The sandy soils of Valmaggiore contribute to shaping the wine's lively ruby appearance and those tangy wild berry aromas. This wine is only aged in neutral oak.

The 2016 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is superb. In most vintages, the Valmaggiore is gracious to the point of being somewhat ethereal, but the 2016 is endowed with tremendous depth and a level of textural resonance I have never seen in this wine before. Expressive and layered, with tons of Nebbiolo character, the 2016 Valmaggiore is a total knock-out. Don't miss it!

With scorching heat and little rain overall, there was reason for worry during the 2017 growing season at large, but in the Roero zone by the banks of the Tanaro river, the hilly Valmaggiore vineyards received more rain than other parts of Piedmont, so these grapes did not suffer as much. Lovely notes of red rose and some herbal tones appear on the nose of the 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore, coupled with balsam, spice and rosemary. It's voluminous in the mouth, and while the Le Vigne Barolo tends to be the most floral and delicately ethereal of Sandrone's release, this bouquet is distinctive in its own way. It would be a nice pair with a mushroom risotto.

The 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is bright, fruity and absolutely delicious. The warm vintage seems to have given the Valmaggiore an extra kick of mid-palate sweetness, which is not a bad thing for a wine that can at times be a bit lean. Sweet red berry fruit and floral notes are nicely pushed forward. The 2017 will benefit from a few years in bottle, which will allow the aromatics to develop, but it is impeccable in its balance and super-classy, even in the early going.

There is a nice freshness to the 2015 Malvasia, with loads of ripe fruit and peach and honey, delivered with great balance and intensity. The mouthful is a little lean, but it also shows a peachy softness. This wine doesn't offer sweetness so much as a fully loaded fragrance. The wine sees 12 months in barrique. Accompany it with grilled prawns marinated in Worcestershire, black pepper, honey, orange juice and a half cup of this wine.

Vivid straw-green. Clean and fresh mineral notes complement fresh apple, white peach and sage aromas and flavors. The perfumed back end showcases a slightly herbal edge and zingy acidity. Only 12% alcohol makes for a very refreshing wine that is light on its feet while packing in just enough flavor to keep it interesting. A nicely done balancing act, this wine boasts sneaky concentration and subtle length.

Brilliant ruby-red. An exotically perfumed, expansive bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, cherry liqueur, vanilla and pipe tobacco, energized by a smoky mineral overtone. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering sweet, concentrated boysenberry, spicecake and mocha flavors that are given spine and lift by a core of juicy acidity. Rich yet energetic in style, displaying excellent finishing clarity, harmonious tannins and a lingering licorice note.

The 2015 Le Redini, Cavalli's Merlot/Alicante blend, is decidedly racy and exotic in this vintage. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice and menthol effortlessly fill out the 2015's supple frame. Readers should expect a bold, juicy wine built on super-ripe fruit.
