A totally original style of blaufränkisch red, which makes me think thatthis is how the best wines of a century or more ago would have tasted when young. Discreet forest berries, but complex spice, savory and dried-flower character. Excellent concentration and a generous tannin structure that long barrel maturation has refined nicely. Drink or hold.
96/100 Punkte James Suckling May 2018 The intense elderberry and licorice nose pulls you in immediately. This is a highly expressive blaufränkisch with a sleek silhouette that is packed with spices and minerals. A very long and almost breathtaking finish. Bottled after three years in large neutral wood. Drink or hold.
92/100 Punkte Fallstaff, Weinguide 2018/19 Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung.
90/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Dezember 2018 Sourced from the shell limestone soils in the Oggau Bratschweingarten, the 2015 Leithaberg Blaufränkisch was fermented for three weeks in open stainless steel fermenters and aged in Stückfass oak vats for 19 months. Pure, fresh and floral on the nose, with crunchy and spicy notes, this is a very charming, fine and elegant red wine with a delicate mocha flavor and refined acidity. This is bright, fresh, salty, beautifully straight and finessed and reveals stimulating purity and frisky character. The "Bratsche" is "the feminine part of the Marienthal," says Georg Prieler, who likes the Fruchtspiel a lot here. It's still young and a bit astringent but with very good aging potential. Tasted in Purbach in August 2018.
94/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Juni 2016 The 2013 Sankt Margarethen Blaufränkisch is a great village wine from Austria's Burgundy. Concentrated and fleshy, with white-pepper powder and black-olive flavors highlighting the perfectly ripe dark cherry, blackberry and cassis aromas on the nose, this is a round and full-bodied, pure, fresh and elegant wine with remarkable fine tannins. This is probably the Blaufränkisch where fruit wine drinkers and Nebbiolo fans could come together. The concentration here is enormous and so is the tannin and acidity, but also: how refined. The finish is pure, fresh and long and reveals a stimulating robustness with leather and tobacco flavors in the aftertaste. What a purity, vitality, finesse and elegance!
92-93/100 Punkte James Suckling May 2018 A stunning nose of spices, licorice and a hint of graphite. A dark and dangerous red that combines warmth with great freshness. The moderately dry tannins drive the long peppery finish. Drink or hold.
93/100 Punkte Robert Parker, June 2016 From an old high-density plot with 50- to 100-year-old Blaufränkisch vines on the deep and loamy soils of Zagersdorf, the 2012 Jagini Zagersdorf is very pure, precise, fresh and spicy on the nose. Silky textured, with a ripe and fleshy fruit concentration, ripe tannins and great tension, this is a lovely pure and grippy red raised for three years in barrels of different sizes (500, 1500 and 1700 liters) and another year in bottle. The plot is planted with 8,000 vines per hectare (1.20 x 1.20 m) and the material is obviously from Hungary (no clones, just mass selections). Whereas the 2011 was only two years in barrels, the 2012 (and the 2013) remain three years due to the loamy soils which produces wines that develop only slowly.
95/100 Punkte James Suckling Mai 2018 After four years in barrel, this complex and highly structured red is closer to a top Barolo than to most blaufränkisch. A very long, powerful finish with perfectly integrated tannins, suggesting serious aging potential. A joint venture by Moric and Schuster.
94/100 Punkte Robert Parker March 2019 This vintage was not part of the official Le Piane Boca retrospective, but I had the chance to taste the wine during my visit to the estate. The 2015 Boca is a charming wine, with soothing and seductive fruit exuberance. Compared to the 2016 vintage (which I tasted from barrel), this 2015 edition is slightly more accessible and open. That's the characteristic of this vintage. It shows soft roundness and ripeness with extremely intact aromas of wild berry, licorice and candied raspberry.
93/100 Punkte James Suckling, September 2018 Dark plums, dried herbs, ink, iodine, elderberries and the faintest touch of resin. Full body, ripe yet structured tannins and a chewy finish. Drink in 2020.
