The 2015 Kamptal Grüner Veltliner Lamm 1ÖTW offers a clear, pure and flinty nose with white fruit and fresh herbal aromas along with lemon grass flavors. Very complex! Full-bodied, round and very elegant on the palate, this is a powerful, very complex and salty Grüner that reveals nice mineral vitality and remarkable finesse toward the finish. It is silky textured, richer than the Gaisberg and needs corresponding dishes. The tannins are fine and well intertwined with the mineral grip and salinity. It is one of the best Veltliners I have tasted from the Kamptal from the 2015 vintage.

From one of the coolest spots in the Kamptal, on crystalline soils, Loimer's 2016 Langenlois Grüner Veltliner Ried Loiserberg exhibits a golden-yellow color and a pure, fresh and spicy/yeasty bouquet with piquant lemon and stony aromas. Juicy, piquant and structured on the palate with aromatic, charmingly ripe and round fruit as well as fine tannins (12 hours of maceration prior to the pressing), this is an intense and persistent Grüner Veltliner with a long, complex and fresh finish. The bitterness and the grip are absolutely stimulating, especially with roast chicken and green salad served with pumpkin seed oil. The Loiserberg was fermented in used oak vats and stainless steel and aged on the full lees for four months, plus another two months on the fine lees.

Picked over two weeks between the middle of September and early October, the 2017 Ried Loiserberg Grüner Veltliner is ripe and spicy on the white fruit-dominated nose. This is a picture-book Grüner Veltliner from the Kamptal#what lovely ripe pear aromas intertwined with herbal, even floral and stony aromas! Lush and round on the palate, this is a terribly juicy-piquant, pure, fresh and stimulating Veltliner with all the sexiness this grape can deliver. The wine has piquant and refreshing mineral acidly, fine grip and good length. Not utterly complex but perfect to have with or without food. Great purity and authenticity. Gruüner at its best! Tasted September 2018.

Tasted from the vat two weeks before bottling in late June 2017, the 2016 Kamptal Grüner Veltliner Renner 1ÖTW shows a pure, fresh and bright bouquet of white fruits along with some lemon flavors. The wine is intense and fresh in its mineral purity, very well structured and develops a fruity and stimulatingly salty finish. The acidity is remarkably fresh. The Renner comes from the bottom of the western part of the Kammerner Gaisberg where the vines root in calcareous silt soils and can age for 8 years or more.

The intensely yellow-colored 2016 Feuersbrunner Rosenberg 1ÖTW opens with a deep, intense and complex bouquet of crushed stones, perfectly ripe fruits and a lovely phenolic freshness coming from the skins. Gorgeous! The attack on the palate is piquant, the fruit super ripe and intense, leaving a densely woven carpet with some mineral needles and fine tannins on the palate. Coming from 60+-year-old vines, this is a great, full-bodied and vivacious Grüner Veltliner from the Wagram that reveals a long and vital, stimulatingly salty finish. The 2015 Langenlois Spiegel 1ÖTW displays deep, rich, perfectly ripe yet pure, fresh and delicate fruit with herbal and even mineral aromas that give a beautiful transparency and finesse. Full-bodied, rich and mineral on the palate, this is a very elegant, vital and well-structured Grüner Veltliner in beautiful balance. It has fine tannins, lingering salinity and tension. Perfect to drink today but the 2015 will still shine in ten or more years from now. The Spiegel is more round, rich and feminine than the Käferberg, which is more pure, fresh and piquant due to the partly crystalline soils. Tasted in July 2017.

The 2016 Feuersbrunner Spiegel 1ÖTW is a Grüner Veltliner that opens with a clear and intense, very attractive tropical fruit aroma of mango and passion fruit with some spicy stony aromas. Fresh, round and piquant on the palate, this is a well structured and juicy Veltliner with a stimulatingly pure, salty and refreshing finish. The aftertaste is long and very aromatic again and reveals the full body again without being overloaded. Picked on September 28, Ott's 2017 Grüner Veltliner Ried Feuersbrunner Spiegel 1ÖTW is very clear, subtle and elegant on the distinctive nose. In early September 2018, the nose displayed white stone fruits intertwined with refreshing, refining gravelly and floral notes. Later that month, the wine showed tropical notes on the intensely fruity, elegant, sexy nose. Full-bodied, rich and dense on the palate, with intense, lush, concentrated fruit and vitalizing, fine acidity, this is a very persistent and powerful Veltliner with a very long, forward, mineral and tensioned finish. This is a powerful but elegant giant and needs time to gain finesse and transparency. The elegance here, however, is remarkable. Tasted twice in early and late September 2018.

Rich and elegant on the palate. this is a generously fruity but precise and tension-filled Veltliner with a lush texture and a precisely mineral piquancy in the pure and salty finish. It was the deadline day of this issue (June 3) when I got the chance to taste the 2015s of Mister Veltliner Bernhard Ott, one of the leading wine estates in the Wagram region, if not the whole Danube valley. These wines, especially the grands crus or Erste Lage wines from Grüner Veltliner (indicated on the label as 1ÖTW), are the greatest wines Ott has bott

Round, finessed and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, complex and mineral Veltliner with intense and lingering fruit aromas that are almost tropical. Although the 2016 is a bit too sweet for my taste, and also lunch or dinner, it is well structured due to the fine acidity and perfectly integrated minerality. The 2015 Lirac La Reine des Bois continues this estate's mastery of the appellation, combining hints of vanilla with black cherry fruit in a full-bodied, richly textured and tannic wine. The blend is 40% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 30% Mourvèdre, with up to 15% being aged in barriques. Longtime readers will be happy to know that the 2010 (still youthful) and the 2006 (nearing maturity) are drinking well. Based on that, expect this vintage to drink well through at least 2030.

One-third each Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2016 Lirac La Reine des Bois continues this cuvée's tradition of overdelivering. Blueberry and mulberry fruit abound, dusted with cocoa and cinnamon. Full-bodied, rich and dense, it offers considerable aging potential, should you have the fortitude to resist it. It's juicy and long on the finish, where it picks up hints of licorice and baking spices. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
