The 2016 Ried Zieregg Morillon is from the oldest, southwest-facing part of the cru and was planted by Manfred Tement in the early 1980s on coral limestone. Today the vineyard is so well balanced that the yields are almost never reduced and the grapes are picked in just a single day. In 2016, the loss due to frost was "just" 50% (compared to 85% in Sulz), and the grapes came only from the very first shoots, which resulted in a long vegetation period. The 2016 includes one barrel of Pinot Blanc (10%) and opens pure, fine and fresh on the nose, with beautiful chalky notes and perfectly ripe fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a pure, vital and tensioned wine with great elegance, grip and lots of (almost peppery) spices and fine tannins. The 2016 has remarkable finesse and a persistent, citrus-fresh finish that reveals endless energy, purity and salinity. This is like a top Côte des Blancs Champagne without bubbles. About ten producers make wine in the Valmaggiore cru in Roero (many of whom are reviewed here), and these wines get better each year I return to taste them. The 2016 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is particularly beautiful, thanks to ideal growing conditions during that year. The Sandrone family counts 3.5 hectares in this location. As an alternative to Barolo, this wine presents a soft and graceful side of Nebbiolo with delicate fruit nuances and distinct mineral etchings. Indeed, the wine is almost salty in taste. The sandy soils of Valmaggiore contribute to shaping the wine's lively ruby appearance and those tangy wild berry aromas. This wine is only aged in neutral oak.

The 2016 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is superb. In most vintages, the Valmaggiore is gracious to the point of being somewhat ethereal, but the 2016 is endowed with tremendous depth and a level of textural resonance I have never seen in this wine before. Expressive and layered, with tons of Nebbiolo character, the 2016 Valmaggiore is a total knock-out. Don't miss it!

With scorching heat and little rain overall, there was reason for worry during the 2017 growing season at large, but in the Roero zone by the banks of the Tanaro river, the hilly Valmaggiore vineyards received more rain than other parts of Piedmont, so these grapes did not suffer as much. Lovely notes of red rose and some herbal tones appear on the nose of the 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore, coupled with balsam, spice and rosemary. It's voluminous in the mouth, and while the Le Vigne Barolo tends to be the most floral and delicately ethereal of Sandrone's release, this bouquet is distinctive in its own way. It would be a nice pair with a mushroom risotto.

The 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is bright, fruity and absolutely delicious. The warm vintage seems to have given the Valmaggiore an extra kick of mid-palate sweetness, which is not a bad thing for a wine that can at times be a bit lean. Sweet red berry fruit and floral notes are nicely pushed forward. The 2017 will benefit from a few years in bottle, which will allow the aromatics to develop, but it is impeccable in its balance and super-classy, even in the early going.

Released six years after the harvest, the 2013 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is theoretically considered a new wine, although in practice this expression of Nebbiolo is part of the Sibi Paucis series of late releases from this estate. It is a beautiful expression that you appreciate more in the mouth than you do on the nose. Silky and elegant, the tannins have been softly integrated, and the overall effect is beautifully tempered and graceful. Its very apparent mineral sensations and budding tertiary complexity make it an important wine even when stacked against the other lofty achievements of Luciano Sandrone.

Macerated overnight with stems and skins and vinified in large oak, the unfiltered 2016 Neubürger Freyheit has a cloudy citrus color and opens with an intensely aromatic bouquet of citrus fruits, oak and yeasty notes. On the palate, this is a lean but textured, beautifully fresh and citrusy Neuburger with a tight, fresh, salty, well-structured finish. This is a terribly crisp and vital but also complex Neuburger with 12% alcohol and no added sulfur. Bottled unfiltered. Tasted October 2018.

The 2017 Nit de Nin La Coma d#en Romeu is from an extremely dry and early harvest that delivered just five hectoliters per hectare! That means they only produced 1,330 bottles from the 1.5 hectares of Garnacha on those slate terraces at 350 meters in altitude. It was bottled in April 2019. It has a beautiful and subtle nose that's very spicy (cloves and cumin, curry and pink pepper) and floral, with a palate that feels light but has great depth and inner power, with pungent flavors and subtle minerality.

The 2016 Nit de Nin Mas d#en Caçador was produced with grapes from 78- to 113-year-old vines in the Mas d'en Caçador vineyard in Porrera. It's a blend of Garnacha Negra, Garnacha Peluda and Cariñena with some 5% white grapes. It fermented with full clusters and indigenous yeasts in a 3,200-liter oak vat and matured in a similar 2,700-liter oak vat. It has great balance and is ripe and Mediterranean, without any excess; it's incredibly elegant and has character. In a way, it makes me think of a classical Châteauneuf, with fine tannins and subtle minerality. 4071 bottles and 60 magnums were filled in April 2019.

The 2017 Nit de Nin Mas d#en Caçador is a vintage they talk about like this: "We will remember this vintage as one of the most extreme of the decade, along with that of 2012. It is in years like these that the work we do in the field is rewarded. In spite of the climatic exceptionality, we have acidity and pH that seem like a miracle to us. Our vines did not suffer the severe frosts of this 2017." The wine has lower alcohol than the 2016 but the same pH of 3.3; insultingly young and tender, it doesn't feel like the wine had a long élevage in oak. It has kept very good freshness and great balance. It's tasty, pungent and long, with power and elegance and all the components to develop nicely in bottle.

The 2017 Nossa Calcário red is a Baga (although in the past, I've been told that among the old vines there are tiny amounts of other varieties) from three vineyards with an average vine age of 80 years, aged 18 months in mostly used French oak (but one 2,000-liter Slavonian cask). Soft and understated on opening, this is a wine that needs some time in the glass to show what it has. It is easy to take a quick taste and wonder where everything is. This is often subtle, but it is eventually so persistent that it makes you notice its virtues all the time. Come back in an hour. The wine expanded in the glass and developed more power while it dribbled terrific fruit over the palate. It is relatively sexy for a Baga, and it was better the next day, fleshing out and seeming even richer. The Baga here never seems terribly rustic, as it can often be. The texture is pure velvet.

In 1977, Sandrine's grandfather was one of the first vignerons to plant Païen (a.k.a. Heida or Savagnin) in the French-speaking part of the Valais. Sandrine still cultivates the old plot that is planted with green and yellow Savagnin. Her organically farmed 2018 Païen Les Bernunes opens with a deep, intense and concentrated bouquet with a deep layer of crushed stones and delicately aromatic ripe fruit aromas. Full-bodied, lush and round, with fine tannins rather than vibrant acidity like the Petite Arvine, this is rich and almost oily-textured Savagnin with a long and tannic finish that is still tight, with tannins that seem to be slightly greenish. This Païen has some features of red wine, like what you find in serious Gewürztraminers, and I'd recommend waiting another year or two before serving the 2018. Tasted in January 2020.

The dark colored 2015 Jenins Pinot Noir Sélection Barrique is a bit shut down right now, but it indicates deep, ripe, refined and elegant fruit on the nose that keeps the flinty terroir aromas alive and doesn't dominate the bouquet. Rich and with a velvety texture, the 2015 reflects the warm year as well as the terroir that keeps the freshness and mineral vitality even in dry and sunny vintages like this. The finish is powerful and intense, very long but pure, fresh and salty as well. I'd keep the wine for another 2 or 3 years, but I suppose you can serve it for a decade. The finish shows such good concentration, tight structure and mineral tension. The tannins, by the way, are legion, but they are fine and polymerizing with body and texture. A great Swiss Pinot indeed, which I terribly underrated on a very hot August day in 2017, but I am happily generous (but fair) with the 2015 today. Tasted in January 2019.

The attack on the palate is generous and intense, but the wine remains elegant and fine, with vital tannins and a persistent mineral acidity and complexity. The long finish is compact, salty and powerful. This is a promising Pinot that was picked with tiny yields of just 400 grams per vine. It's more intense and fleshier than the refreshing and transparent 2017 but sweeter and more charming than the great 2015. In any case, the 2016 needs more time to show off. The 2017 Fläscher Pinot Noir Reserve is an impressive red that shows a deep, pure and elegant bouquet of ripe red fruits, crushed stones, blood and some flinty aromas. Lush and intense on the palate, this is a wide and expansive Pinot with fine tannins and remarkable mineral freshness. The tannins are fine but structuring, and the finish is powerful, still tight and slightly dry, with good grip and refreshing salinity. Very promising. 13.5% alcohol. Tasted in Zurich in December 2019.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Sélection "Zeit. Lebensfreude. Liebe." is pure, fresh and bright on the intense, ripe and elegant red berry-scented nose with its mushroom, red paprika and liverwurst aromas. Full-bodied, rich and juicy yet fresh and pure on the palate, this is an elegant and juicy Pinot with fine, refreshing tannins and good grip. It is powerful yet not heavy and is very well made though slightly sweetish. 13.6% alcohol. Tasted in Zurich in December 2019.

The 2017 Planetes de Nin comes from the four hectares of 20-year-old Garnacha and 11-year-old Cariñena in the Planetes vineyard in Porrera at 450 meters in altitude. It's 60% Garnacha (some of it Peluda) and the rest Cariñena, harvested early. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 3,200-liter oak vats and one 1,000-liter amphora for 17 months. It has depth and harmony, and the vines are getting older and seem to be better and better balanced. This is not that different from the 2016; it feels quite stable and has its style and character, especially since the 2015 vintage.
