The 2018 Ried Schüttenberg Chardonnay displays a clear and aromatic but oak-dominated and quite international or anonymous bouquet with potted ginger notes. Lush but piquant and fresh on the palate, with good phenolic grip and nice spicy flavors, this is an elegant and dense Chardonnay that reflects the vitality and tension of the terroir but also the ambition to handcraft a Burgundy, whereas Walter Glatzer is producing an excellent and very convincing Sauvignon Blanc from this same vineyard. Tasted in September 2019.

From Beride, the bright straw-yellow colored 2017 Chardonnay Velabona displays an intense yet bright and elegant bouquet with floral and herbal aromas and notes of crushed stones, white champignons and stewed apples. On the palate, this is an elegant, refined and chalky-mineral Chardonnay with great purity but remarkable concentration and juiciness on the salty, well-structured finish. Champagne sends windy greetings again here. Tasted at Brancaia in Zurich in October 2019.

Intensiver mineralischer Untergrund. Ein Châteaneuf ohne Effekthascherei. Gemacht für ein langes Leben.

Leading off the Châteauneuf du Papes and made from younger vines, with the goal to drink well in its youth, the Grenache-dominated 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape La Belle Voyageuse (there's 4% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, with a tiny splash of Counoise and Vaccarèse) sports a vibrant ruby/purple color as well as lively notes of raspberries, bouquet garni, spice box, dried soil and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, supple and elegant on the palate, it's a much more upfront, mid-weight effort compared to the more concentrated, structured Reine des Bois cuvée. It should drink nicely on release and over the following decade.

Intense, featuring lively licorice and plum reduction notes leading the way, followed by fruitcake, raspberry pâte de fruit and sweet tobacco flavors. Shows excellent drive and focus through the finish, with a nice graphite edge. Best from 2020 through 2030.

Now that it has been in bottle a while, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is looking even better than I projected based on last year's prebottling sample. It's all violets, cherries, subtle allspice and clove and traditional garrigue notes of lavender and thyme. Full-bodied and rich, it's crazy complex, adding hints of tar and black olives on the long, silky finish. It should evolve beautifully over the next two decades.

Vivid ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe raspberry, cherry and garrigue, while a suave floral element expands with air. Fleshy, seamless and broad on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and fruitcake flavors that are braced and lifted by a spine of juicy acidity. The floral note builds as the wine opens up and carries through the sweet, strikingly long finish, which leaves behind red fruit liqueur and licorice notes.

As I reported last year, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo is impressive. While it's less flamboyantly aromatic than the Cuvée Réservée, it's more powerful and concentrated. Full-bodied and rich, it's loaded with potent raspberry fruit and silky tannins and boasts a finish that won't stop. Hints of roasted meat, lavender and thyme add complexity to the waves of fruit, which wash gently across the palate, exhibiting a lovely soft touch.

Potent and intense, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape La Dame Voyageuse is a rich, dramatic bottling, the best I've tasted under this label. It's approachable now, but smart money is on it aging well for at least a decade. It's full-bodied and supple, with concentrated blueberry, mulberry and plum fruit, hints of licorice, cola and braised meat and just a dusting of baking spices (10% of the blend aged in oak). Tasted three times, with consistent notes.

Waves of black cherries, plums and chocolate wash across the full-bodied, velvety palate, lingering nearly forever on the finish. As big and bold as it is, it remains breathtakingly elegant and fine. The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape La Reine des Bois was bottled just two weeks before I visited the domaine in June, but despite that, it seemed open, lush and delicious on both occasions I tasted it (once blind a week later). Hints of oak and licorice accent black cherries in this big, plush, velvety-textured wine, which is 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% each Syrah and Vaccarèse. It's silky enough to enjoy young but has the requisite stuffing to age well for more than a decade.

Finishes juicy and impressively long, displaying fine-grained tannins and lingering florality.

A new special cuvée introduced in 2014, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée A Tempo Blanc is an even split of Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, all from the Mont Pertuis lieu-dit, that was aged in a mix of very old barrels and stainless steel. There#s a scant 100 cases produced and it has terrific, saliva-inducing minerality as well as ample citrus blossom, white peach, mint and a sea breeze-like saltiness. Tight, focused, medium to full-bodied and with impressive density, it needs 6-12 months of bottle age, and I suspect will keep for over a decade.

Brilliant straw. A powerful, expansive bouquet evokes mineral-accented Meyer lemon, pear, iodine and jasmine. Sappy citrus and orchard fruit flavors stain the palate and display a suave blend of richness and vivacity, with no undue weight. Juicy, taut and strikingly concentrated, displaying the tension of a Grand Cru Chablis. Finishes minerally, floral and extremely long, conveying a repeating floral quality. This should turn out to be a stunning wine, by any measure, and as white Châteauneuf goes, it'll be monumental.

Transparent yellow-gold. An impressively complex, mineral-accented bouquet displays aromas of ripe citrus and orchard fruits, nori, buttered toast and jasmine, and a hint of anise sneaks in as the wine opens up. At once deep and lithe on the palate, offering vibrant Meyer lemon, pear, gingerbread and fennel flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Displays superb tension and thrust on a mineral- and floral-driven finish that refuses to let up. I'd have absolutely no problem lining up this remarkable wine alongside a group of high-end Grand Cru white Burgundies from that region's biggest names.

Distinctly concentrated but lively as well, closing with firm grip and repeating cherry and floral notes. Nothing easygoing here (it does check in at 14.5% alcohol, by the way), despite its relatively humble appellation.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and very charming and delicate in its lightness and shameless fruitiness. This represents a terroir where the Mediterranean Alps meet Merlot and an excellent winemaker. It's impossible not to fall in love with this wine, which has grip and tension and this alpine freshness mixed with Mediterranean charm. Can't stop... Tasted in October 2019.

The latest release of the NV Brut Charles de Gaulle was disgorged in December 2018 with seven and a half grams per liter dosage, and the wine is showing very well, bursting from the glass with a generous bouquet of golden orchard fruits, warm biscuits, honeycomb and peach. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and enveloping, with a fleshy core of fruit and nicely integrated dosage that lends the wine an old-fashioned, gourmand profile that's appropriate enough given its namesake. I'd expect this to pick up considerable toasty complexity with additional aging on cork.

It is a phenomenal blend of 55% Cariñena and 45% Garnacha from very old vines planted on schist (llicorella) slopes in the village of Poboleda. Dark, almost opaque with a bright border, the nose is more about black fruit, peat, graphite and some shoe polish, with a generous dose of oak, a little raw (from youth) but with harmony and huge potential to develop. The bunches are hand-harvested and the grapes selected one by one in a double sorting table and fermented in stainless steel. The wine matured in new French oak barriques for 16 months, in a straightforward process, because what's important here is the quality of the grapes, mostly from centenary vines. There is great harmony in the palate, too, intense and penetrating without being aggressive, elegant and balanced in an XXL way. I see great f

The 2016 El Espinal is a Maturana Tinta produced in a joint venture with Miguel Ángel Mato, who owns the vineyard in San Vicente de a Sonsierra and works with his horse for others like the Eguren family and Benjamín Romeo. This is the first vintage of this unusual wine made from vines regrafted from Garnacha to Maturana Tinta. I also tasted the 2017 next to this 2016 from a higher-yielding year; the wine had a shorter élevage (12 months in barrel), as the wine is a bit lighter. They didn't really want the green pepper the variety can easily deliver and waited a bit longer to pick the grapes and get aromas of white pepper, bay leaf and licorice, and this has less herbal notes than the 2017. It mixes some dark cherries with those varietal notes. This is drinking nicely today and might not be as long lived as the 2017.

One of two new single-vineyard reds, the 2017 El Espinal comes from a plot in San Vicente de la Sonsierra at 650 meters in altitude, on sandy soils with clay and limestone surrounded by pine trees. The particularity here is that Maturana Tinta (a.k.a. Castests, a relative of Carmenere) was regrafted on Garnacha some 25 years ago, and this is a varietal Maturana, which is quite rare. It fermented in 225-liter barrels and matured in 600-liter barrels for 15 months. There is more concentration and more of everything, including the peppery and herbal aromas, and a pungent note of freshly cracked back peppercorn on the palate. It's a more powerful and long-lived year, and it's impossible to guess as Rioja because the profile is completely Atlantic and would fool almost everybody in a blind tasting. So, it's not for you if you hate the herbal character of the Bordeaux wines. 1,200 bottles were filled in March 2019.

It's medium bodied with fine-grained tannins and has very good balance. This cuvée seems to be improving vintage after vintage, they keep working their same vineyards, they keep improving their knowledge, and they are more experienced. The barrels are older and the integration is better. This is earthier and a little wilder than La Dama.

It was produced with fruit from vines averaging 15 years of age, and it fermented in oak at controlled temperature. It matured in French 2 ,500-liter oak foudres with lees for eight months. It's expressive and aromatic, with some grape-pulp aromas, somehow floral and with a spicy touch. The 2016 Etna Rosso Contrada Montelaguardia Fragore is a compact and mid-weight expression that opens to a pretty garnet color with dark ruby hues. The bouquet is redolent of wild berry and cassis, but you also get hints of wild rose, smoke, tar and volcanic smoke. As a first vintage of this wine from Etna, the folks at Donnafugata have hit the nail on the head. This is a great wine for a blackened tuna steak on the grill.

Conveys an impression of superb concentration but also of nonpareil refinement, boasting the uncanny combination of tactile presence and deep luscious pristine red fruit, aromatic herb and stony flavors. A wine of great length and potential with a penetrating steely quality and with lots of fruit lurking in the background. This is the first vintage of Donnafugata#s new top of the line Etna Rosso and it#s a beauty. It undoubtedly helps that the grapes come from the Montelaguardia contrada, one of the lesser known but terroir-wise, one of the of the very best Etna contradas of all.

The 2004 Tinto Gloria Reynolds -Cathedral is an equal blend of Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet, aged in new French oak for 24 months. This is simply the old Gloria Reynolds Tinto with a new name, Cathedral only indicating a re-release program. Julian Cuellar Reynolds said: Gloria Cathedral 2004 is an old harvest, the lot of every Gloria that I keep in the cellar for a second release after 12 years. I was not sold on this originally, but it is very impressive now that it is mature-and that maturity is the key to success here. The tannins have moderated, the oak has been pulled in and, most importantly, there is a glorious medley of complex flavors typical of many maturing wines, some earth, forest floor, dried cassis and so on. The texture is gorgeous, too, silky and sensual. If the fruit seems fully mature, the structure still gives it energy. The tannins are controlled, but there is still grip and tension on the finish. The 2009 Gloria Reynolds Art & Tradition Tinto is an equal blend of Alicante Bouschet and Trincadeira, aged for 24 months in new French oak. It comes in at 14% alcohol. Far more burly and muscular than the 2011 Grande Reserva this issue#even with two extra years of bottle age-this is the one where the winery goes for a statement and let's it all hang out. Yet, with the late release, this has come to a place where it is at least drinkable now, if still a bit tight. Long on the finish, with the beefy nuances of the Alicante dominating the wine, this also has surprising freshness, some acidity that lifts the fruit. In this big and very warm year, this seems impressive for its success in maintaining its balance. At the same time, it adds a layer of depth and power to the Grande Reserva. This seems positioned to age very well#the producer thinks well over 30 years-but let's start here and see where it goes in time.

The NV Brut Excellence is a terrific effort at this level. A fragrant, open bouquet leads to deep, layered core of fruit. The wine shows gorgeous complexity, nuance and a multi-dimensional personality that is simply compelling. The Brut Excellence is 45% Pinot Noir, 13% Pinot Meunier and 42% Chardonnay. The significant presence of red grapes gives the wine much of its breadth and richness on the palate. This is Lot L745-1422, disgorged 1st week of December, 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2014.

The 2017 Bianco del Ticino Granito blends Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris and Blanc and opens with a clear, intensely floral and refreshing bouquet of ripe fruit aromas intertwined with notes of crushed stones and some oak. Precise and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense, tight and seriously structured white with ripe fruit, tension-giving minerals and fine bitters on the finish. The oak influence is palatable but moderate, and the wine has good, refreshing length with some fine tannins and stimulating salinity. This is an excellent white to have with a big, fat fish or good risotto. It is still very young though. Tasted in October 2019.

A few years after releasing the centenary Carignan wine, they decided to bottle a 2015 1903 Centenary Grenache, with a similar approach and philosophy. The grapes are sourced from their oldest family vineyards in the village of Poboleda, basically from two vineyards where they have both Garnacha and Cariñena; but they were picked, fermented and aged separately. The 2015 vintage is not an easy one, perhaps a little too dry and ripe for Garnacha but better for Cariñena; the wine shows high ripeness and is a bit jammy on the nose, with better balance in the palate, where it shows good balance and freshness. It's a bit of a heady Garnacha, an intoxicating wine, showy, open, expressive and impressive. The destemmed grapes fermented in stainless steel, and the wine matured in new and used 225- and 500-liter barrels to complete some 16 months of aging. 600 bottles were filled in May 2017. This will be released in 2018. I cannot wait to taste future v

From the lower part of the terraced cru, Proidl's 2017 Riede Pellingen 1ÖTW Grüner Veltliner opens with tropical fruit aromas on the nose. It is a full-bodied, round, intense and creamy-textured wine with concentrated fruit and good tannin structure. There is a certain lack of brightness and freshness at this stage, which shows a wine that is a bit too rich and sweet for my personal taste. The finish is very long and intense, and the power is quite well-balanced, but the future keeps the bestsellers for this 2017 Pellingen. Tasted at Schloss Grafenegg, September 2018.

Hirsch's 2012 Gruner Veltliner Lamm is fascinatingly Chablis-like in its aromatics and savor, projecting salted, herbed chicken and mushroom stock mingled with salivary gland-milking oyster liquor. Full, expansive and palpably extract rich, this finishes with impressive grip if also with a bit of extraneous bitterness not anticipated from the nose or the initial palate impression. Expect this to pique appetites and attention at table through at least 2022, and quite possibly to reveal yet greater profundity.

The 2016 Ried Steinertal Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is from the coolest Grüner Veltliner single vineyard of the Pichler family, with sandy gneiss and granite soils. The 2016 opens with a clear and fresh but also intense fruit aroma that is still a bit discreet on the nose. The attack on the palate is really fresh and piquant due to remarkable acidity. The wine is pure and mineral, shows a good phenolic grip and reveals white fruit aromas like yellow-skinned apples. The finish is clear, fresh and grippy and shows some attractive crispy fruit flavors. This is a lean, elegant, well balanced, medium to full-bodied Grüner Veltliner with less than 13% alcohol. From one of the warmest sites in the Wachau, Martin Michelbach's intensely yellow colored 2016 Ried Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner Smaragd intermixes spicy flint with ripe, precise fruit aromas and lemon notes. Very elegant, pure and salty on the palate, this is a full-bodied, piquant and well-structured Loibenberg. Still very young but balanced, with vivacious acidity and good tannins, this 2016 should have a great aging potential.

From 66-year-old vines planted on the gneiss and quartzite soils in the steep Dürnstein cru, the 2017 Ried Höhereck Grüner Veltliner Smaragd displays an intense, fine and elegant nose with delicate citric and flinty-mineral notes. Very fine and elegant on the palate, with intense and well-concentrated fruit and lots of body, this is a rich and powerful but refined and well-balanced Smaragd with lingering piquant minerality. Bottled in June 2018. Tasted in Dürnstein/Wachau, September 2018.

Quite a powerful dry white, but with wonderful elegance. The balance of mirabelle and fresh-herb aromas and fresh acidity is spot on. Ripe and lively finish. Drink or hold.

The 2017 Ried Steinertal Riesling Smaragd is intense and flinty on the dark and stony, very flinty and coolish nose with its concentrated white peach and lime aromas. Full-bodied, sharp, super pure and mineral on the palate, this is a full-bodied, tight, fresh and serious wine with a long and tensioned but still terribly young finish. Great complexity and tension! One of the finest Rieslings from the Danube River in 2017. Tasted in Oberloiben/Wachau, September 2018.

Difficult to pick in time, the 2018 Ried Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner Smaragd offers a clear, fresh and flinty, elegant and balanced nose with riper fruit and delicately spicy aromas. Round, lush and intense on the palate, this full-bodied but elegant wine reveals a long and powerful finish that doesn't lose its freshness and elegance. The wine has good structure and phenolic grip but no phenolic or drying bitters. It combines elegance and freshness with power and extraordinarily ripe but still precise fruit. Pichler holds nine parcels in this large vineyard, of which the most are in the central part and in lower areas. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.

From the latest harvest pass and the oldest vines, though no botrytis yet highly ripe and overripe grapes, the 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd M is very concentrated and intense but clear and elegant on the slightly flinty nose. Sourced in the Kellerberg, Loibenberg Liebenberg and the terraced western part of the Kollmütz, this is a lush and rich, very intense yet elegant Veltliner with lots of power but also remarkable finesse and lingering salinity on the finish. Drinking this wine young is ridiculous and a waste of its talents and potential greatness. Although I don't know where the wine going from here I suppose it will develop very well over the next 10 years. The 2018, unlike the other Smaragd vines, was destemmed, macerated for up to 24 hours and 50% fermented in large (25 hectoliter) oak vats, and the lees were stirred once per month. Bottled in August 2019 and tasted at the domain in September.

The 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Rotes Tor is entirely based on the fruit from Spitz (the vineyards below the red gate) and opens with a deep, precise and flinty bouquet that shows a coolish-mineral and darker-toned character with rather discreet fruit aromas. Tasted as a barrel sample in September, the 2018 Grüner Veltliner Unendlich is terribly pure and mineral on the nose. Based on the fruits of predominantly Kellerberg and Liebenberg with about 10% of Kollmütz (which is not part of the 2017), the bouquet is clear, fresh and flinty, very deep and mineral, with aromas of white-pepper berries. Rich and fruity on the palate, this is a powerful but also finessed and elegant Veltliner with still a lot of bitters. The 2018 will be aged on the lees for another eight months and will gain finesse. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.
