    The 2014 La Dama, as with the El Terroir bottling, is produced with Garnacha grapes from vines planted starting in 1903. They told me they consider 2014 a beautiful vintage, healthy and balanced (although the organic and biodynamic vineyards then to be healthy and balanced every vintage!), and a pleasure to vinify. 2014 is a very complete vintage, with ripeness and freshness, elegance and power. This La Dama is a great example of it. They select the wines from stonier vineyards, where the soils are shallower and the mother rock is very close to the surface. These plots tend to produce more austere, mineral and elegant wines, where the chalkiness of the tannins talks about the limestone soils. This has to be among the finest Garnacha produced in Spain. This shows more elegant than any previous years, possibly the best vintage to date. Bravo.

    A varietal Garnacha from Riva de Tereso, the 2017 La Dula comes from a small 80-year-old plot planted in 1944, so production is extremely low. It's bottled unoaked and matured in amphorae to see what the pure grape delivers. It's fruit-driven and shows some ripeness from a warm and dry year. This tends to have very high acidity, so the grapes are picked late to achieve good ripeness. It fermented in tinaja (amphorae), where it's kept for a few months and then is bottled early. There are perfumed notes, and something herbal/wild that I like. The palate reveals fine-grained tannins and clean flavors. Only 670 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018.

    The 2016 La Zarcita is a blend of Trincadeira Preta, Touriga Nacional and Garnacha Tintorera grapes from limestone, clay and sand soils. In 2015 they also planted red Garnacha with the idea to include it in future vintages of this blend. There was more rain than average in 2016, and that allowed the ripening cycle to be longer, which is something really good in a region like this. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic and eight months in new and second use 500-liter French oak barrels. It's very floral and perfumed, with a captivating nose. It's still a straightforward red but with more depth than in previous vintages and especially great freshness. 2016 seems like a very good vintage in the zone. The palate is approachable and soft, with very good acidity. And it's a bargain! 30,000 bottles produced.

    The 2015 Lacima is really impressive. It's a serious, balsamic and reticent red with a faithful expression of rocks through its blend of 70% Mencía with 20% Brancellao and 5% each Mouratón and Sousón. The grapes were very healthy, and the crop was quite small and concentrated. It fermented with natural yeasts in open-top 500-liter French oak vats and had a long élevage of 17 months in used barriques followed by no less than 14 months in bottle before it was released. It combines power with elegance, and it has concentration and nuance and feels quite young and lively. It's tasty, clean and long, and it seems to have good balance and all that is needed for a long and positive development in bottle. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Lacima so far.

    A champion in quality-to-price ratio, the red 2013 Lalama wants to replicate the traditional wine produced as a field blend that is mostly Mencía with some 10% a myriad other varieties#Brancellao, Mouratón, Sousón and Garnacha Tintorera#from many different vineyards on different soils, altitudes and expositions. The destemmed and crushed grapes fermented in 2500-3500 and 4500-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic in 300-liter barriques where it was kept for 13 months followed by a further seven months in oak vat. It has an explosive and captivating nose, an explosion of wild berries and herbs, with just a creamy touch and some spices. It's redolent of acid berries, with an electric-like sensation in the palate revealing great freshness, focused flavors, very fine tannins and a clean, long and refreshing finish. Yields were also low because they lost some 62% of the grapes to hail, and the wine is concentrated and powerful, quite fruit-driven and expressive, juicy and chewy. It has some spicy and smoky undertones and a dry, long finish. This is a modern and luxurious style of Ribeira Sacra.

    Including the 2015 Los Acilates, I had two vintages to taste of the single-vineyard red that comes from a plot that is different than the rest of the estate. It's a north-facing, steep slope rich in limestone and was planted with well-adapted Portuguese grapes#Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira Preta#in 2003. Not as hot as 2014 but still a warm and dry vintage, 2015 saw an early harvest with very healthy grapes. The grapes fermented in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts, followed by malolactic in barrique. The wine matured in well-seasoned small 500-liter French oak foudres for 12 months (they have shortened the oak aging of this wine). This is the finest vintage of this bottling I've tried so far; it has very good balance and a mixture of red and black berry fruit and floral undertones. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Amazing for the zone and for a vintage like 2015. I really believe in these grapes here. 7'000 bot

    The 2017 Malleolus is also pure Tempranillo, in this case from small parcels (in Spanish "majuelo" and in Latin "malleolus") of vines aged between 25 and 75 years of age. Yields were reduced by 50% in 2017, so it's a very unusual vintage. It matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. As I found with the rest of 2017s, this is very expressive, aromatic and fresh, floral, aromatic, happy and expressive, without excess ripening and with fruit in the foreground and the oak neatly folded into the fruit.     The 2017 Malleolus is also pure Tempranillo, in this case from small parcels (in Spanish "majuelo" and in Latin "malleolus") of vines aged between 25 and 75 years of age. Yields were reduced by 50% in 2017, so it's a very unusual vintage. It matured in French oak barrels for 18 months. As I found with the rest of 2017s, this is very expressive, aromatic and fresh, floral, aromatic, happy and expressive, without excess ripening and with fruit in the foreground and the oak neatly folded into the fruit. It's juicy, medium to full-bodied, perhaps not as concentrated as others, but balanced, with fine-grained tannins; it's very pleasant and representative of the grape and zone. Very good for the conditions of the year.

    The other single-vineyard Tempranillo is the 2011 Malleolus de Sancho Martín, always the more backward of the two. It is sourced from a small (0.84-hectare) single plot of vines planted in 1964 on chalk soils that provide more austere wines. It went through malo in French barriques, better suited for wines from chalky soils. Like the rest of the top of the range, it matured in French oak barrels for some 18 months before bottling. Although it feels a little reticent, it slowly develops notes of minerals, red and black fruit, spices and nicely integrated oak. The palate also shows good integration, balance and elegance, with chalky tannins that are very fine and a finish where the oak-related flavors are intermixed with subtle minerality, giving it a little salty sensation. It will be much better with some time in bottle. Only 2,500 bottles produced.

    The 2014 Malleolus de Sancho Martín is always the more backward of the two single-vineyard bottlings.     There are now new wines from Villabuena de Álava, so the 2017 NAHI Blanco has been joined by a red with the same name. It has volume and more clout and depth and keeps very good freshness. She tries to keep the oak to a minimum to keep the fruit and the origin. This 2017 feels a little shy and has a smoky touch, with floral notes and some citrus aromas and flavors, and it only has a sweet-ish touch on the finish. It's mostly Viura but has other white grapes, such as Malvasía Riojana and other old varieties like Calagraño and Rojal. It comes from five small plots, and they only produce 600 bottles, so yields were extremely low. It takes some time to take off in the glass, but it finally develops beautiful aromatics, including some mineral/diesel-like tones, which might give us an idea of how slowly the wine is going to develop in bottle. The vineyards are in the process of being recovered, so the volume might increase in the following years.

    The 2011 Nit De Nin is from a single vineyard, Mas d#en Cacador, a steep, north-facing vineyard in the village of Porrera on slate soils where vines are very old # all over 70 years of age. Yields in this vineyard were six hectoliters per hectare. The blend is 60% Garnacha, 40% Carinena, full-cluster fermented in demi-muids and aged for 10 months in barrel and eight months in foudre. It is very aromatic, flowery and mineral, reminiscent of a great Barolo, tar and roses, with telluric, earthy notes of peat and graphite intermixed with aromas of red, black and blue fruit. There#s more concentration and depth than in the Planetes, but equally great acidity that gives freshness and makes it very drinkable. It#s a savory, umami-driven wine, big, but it does not shout, it whispers, and you have to listen to it. A great effort for a very difficult vintage that could be drunk now or aged for a long time.     The 2017 Nit de Nin Mas d#en Caçador is a vintage they talk about like this: "We will remember this vintage as one of the most extreme of the decade, along with that of 2012. It is in years like these that the work we do in the field is rewarded. In spite of the climatic exceptionality, we have acidity and pH that seem like a miracle to us. Our vines did not suffer the severe frosts of this 2017." The wine has lower alcohol than the 2016 but the same pH of 3.3; insultingly young and tender, it doesn't feel like the wine had a long élevage in oak. It has kept very good freshness and great balance. It's tasty, pungent and long, with power and elegance and all the components to develop nicely in bottle.

    Cariñena Blanca has finally been added to the registry of varieties in Spain, which means it should soon be allowed by the Priorat appellation, so they could start putting it on the labels of the 2018 Planetes de Nin Carinyena Blanca. This fermented and matured in used 300-liter oak barrels for seven months. It's 13% alcohol and has a pH of 3.2 with 6.5 grams of acidity (tartaric); they struggled to get the minimum 13% alcohol required by the appellation, as the year was very cold and they lost a lot of grapes waiting for the alcohol level. It's a year with lots of freshness, and the wine, which feels really young and undeveloped, needs some time in the glass to open up. This is an exceptional year that is going to develop slowly in bottle. The palate is vibrant, focused and dry, with citrus freshness and a mineral finish. 1,948 bottles were filled in April 2018.

    Their vineyard-selection cuvée 2007 Reserva Particular currently in the market is from a great vintage in the region, especially for Xarello#even if this is a blend of 64% Macabeo and 36% Xarello, I think this has to be one of the finest vintages, at least in recent times, along with 2001 and 2004. This comes from three separate vineyards and is always a little riper, more developed, and in this vintage, it combines power with freshness, like in the best vintages.
