    The 2015 Sicilia Adènzia is a blend of Nero d'Avola and Syrah in equal parts. I've always liked this combination of these two like-minded grapes. Both offer robust fruit intensity with soft, mellow tannins. The bouquet is saddled with lots of ripe, black fruit with lingering tones of smoke, spice, resin and sweet tobacco. This is a full-bodied Sicilian red to drink with spicy or barbecued meat dishes.

    The exceptional NV Adorado is a product of the past, as it's a wine that is said not to have been touched since 1967. It's a blend of the three classical grapes from Rueda#Verdejo, Palomino and Viura. There is more volatility, more intensity and pungency here, but also more finesse and depth and even more elegance. It matured in a solera system for a very long time, and initially, it must have been aged under flor yeasts. It's 16% alcohol but was originally fortified to 17%, and it's very dry and tasty. There are some 2,000 bottles of this, apparently only magnums. Wines like this are almost eternal.

    The only white produced at Vall Llach, the 2014 Aigua de Llum, is mainly Viognier complemented with other local grapes, some 15% Garnacha Blanca and 5% made up of Picapoll, Macabeo, Moscatel and Escanyavella. This is not a shy white, as it packs 15.5% alcohol, with low-ish acidity and a round and lush mouthfeel. Half of the Viognier fermented in new 300-liter French oak barrels and the rest in stainless steel, like the other varieties, which were later transferred to new 225-liter barriques where the wines aged for some four months. This is often my favorite wine from the winery, as it's the more drinkable one. Only 986 bottles were filled in June 2015.

    More expensive is their 2014 Almirez, which spends much longer time in oak and comes from vines 15-65 years old in slightly higher elevations. I didn#t see much difference in this wine from its less-expensive sibling, although this one had more grilled meat and almost Provençal, Châteauneuf Du Pape-like blood characteristics, with blackberry and cassis, full body and a long, lusty finish. Some licorice also makes an appearance in this impressively constituted wine. Drink it over the next decade.

Disgorged after three years in July 2015 with five grams of dosage, this is a full-bodied, round, intense and very elegant Rosé with great finesse and a persist finish. Serve with food.

    There is a white produced with Viura grapes that is only produced in cold vintages, which is exactly what the name of the 2013 Añadas Frías means. The grapes are sourced from a 1.5 hectare plot at 600 meters altitude of clay and limestone soils. It fermented in new 500-liter French oak barrels. The analytical data show figures more common in Chablis than in Rioja; the wine has a pH below three and there's no natural way the wine goes through malolactic. The nose showed intense iodine aromas and diesel-like notes, highly mineral, with a notable absence of fruit and oak. The palate is also soil-driven, with very chalky tannins and effervescent, citrusy acidity. It has a tremendously tasty finish, almost salty. This is one of those whites that feels like it was produced with stones rather than grapes. This should age in bottle forever. 1,476 bottles produced and filled in March 2015. On the palate, this is a perfectly round, lush and elegant white with great harmony, persistent fruit and stimulating mineral tension and salinity. This is Hannes Schuster's finest Aus den Dörfern (which literally means "from the villages") so far. The grapes are sourced in Sankt Margarethen, Oslip and Schützen, and each village is harvested and vinified together. The whole blend includes only a few single-plot vinificatons.     This is the second year Aleste is produced instead of Cannubi Boschis, however the grapes are exactly the same. The 2014 Barolo Aleste is named after Luciano Sandrone's grandchildren Alessia and Stefano. The 2014 is still wound up and will require extra time to find its footing. The Sandrone family lost 25% of their fruit production in this challenging harvest. The wine offers fragrant notes of wild cherry and cassis with smoke, crushed stone and candied orange peel. The tannins are firm and textured. It is the palate (more than the nose) that requires more time to soften.

    The 2013 Barolo le Vigne is another stellar achievement from Luciano Sandrone and his family. Since 2010, the blend for this wine has been tweaked just a bit to include more fruit from the Baudana cru in Serralunga d'Alba. This wine shows a ripe and succulent mouthfeel with ample richness and power that drives the wine smoothly over the palate. These darker qualities can be attributed to the Baudana fruit that is known for power and heft. Fruit from the Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto offers delicate perfumes and ethereal elegance. This vineyard site is home to loose, sandy soils. The combination of these two extremes is simply delightful.

The addition of Serralunga fruit in the blend has added depth and structure in all of the wine's dimensions. Dark red cherry, plum, mint, rose petal, tar and licorice build into the huge, voluptuous finish. Readers who can find the 2013 should not hesitate, as it is outrageously beautiful and also one of the clear wines of the vintage. Vineyard sites are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli.

These darker qualities can be attributed to the Baudana fruit that is known for power and heft. Fruit from the Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto offers delicate perfumes and ethereal elegance. This vineyard site is home to loose, sandy soils. The combination of these two extremes is simply delightful.

    Sandrone's 2013 Barolo Le Vigne is a real stunner. Powerful, ample and deep, the 2013 exudes class from start to finish. The addition of Serralunga fruit in the blend has added depth and structure in all of the wine's dimensions. Dark red cherry, plum, mint, rose petal, tar and licorice build into the huge, voluptuous finish. Readers who can find the 2013 should not hesitate, as it is outrageously beautiful and also one of the clear wines of the vintage. Vineyard sites are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli.

    Sandrone's 2008 Barolo Le Vigne is a wine of breathtaking textural finesse and elegance. Nothing really stands out, so phenomenal is the wine's balance and sense of harmony. This is the kind of wine that is easy to overlook because it doesn't ask for attention and isn't showy. Instead, everything is simply in the right place. The finest, most silky of tannins support a core of sweet red berries, flowers, mint and spices, all of which are woven together with total refinement. The eternal, nuanced finish bodes very well for the future. This is a dazzling effort from Luciano and Luca Sandrone. Le Vigne is made from parcels in Vignane, Ceretta, Conterni and Merli. In 2008 there is a little less Vignane as part of the vineyard was hit by hail. There is little question that the blending of fruit from several sites was a huge advantage in 2008.     Peter Wegelin's single-vineyard 2016 Malanser Blauburgunder Scadena is from very calcareous slate soils from a clos that is located below the Bothmar castle. The wine was aged for 12 months in 80% new barriques and another 12 months in used tonneaux. The bouquet is deep, intensely ripe and fruity as well as toasty but very elegant. The palate is full-bodied, dense and tightly structured, with fine but grippy tannins and good acidity. This clear-cut 2016 needs lots of aeration (or time), but its vitality and tension is promising. Release date: autumn this year. Tasted January 2019.

Full-bodied, vital and fresh on the palate, with a tiny bit of CO2 and a tight, vital structure as well as lingering minerals and fine tannins, this is a stunningly good wine with a long, complex finish.     The 2014 Malanser Blauburgunder Reserva has a dark purple color and opens with a very toasty but also floral, slatey bouquet of perfectly ripe cherry and dark berry aromas. Full-bodied, ripe and sweet on the silky palate, this is an intense and stunningly powerful Pinot Noir for that difficult vintage. Its fruit is quite developed, but the wine is still very firm and provided with lots of mealy tannins that are still a bit dry on the finish. This is an excellent long-distance runner that should be cellared for another 7-8 years.

Smooth and round on the palate, this is an elegant and rather charming Blaufränkisch with concentrated and fleshy cherry fruit on the spicy finish. The tannins are a bit more rough here but also spicy. Pair this with dark, roasted meat. Tasted October 2018.

    Heinrich's 2015 Blaufränkisch Leithaberg is from the southeast-facing vineyard slopes of Jois, Winden and Breitenbrunn, where the vines root in limestone, limestone-sandstone, slate and mica schist soils. Fermented for three weeks in open wooden fermenters and aged for 20 months in old 500-liter barrels, this is a deep, pure, spicy and noble-flavored red wine with fine terroir and fruit aromas. Full-bodied, very elegant, remarkably salty and long on the fresh and refined palate, this is an excellent Blaufränkisch from the Leithaberg DAC. The wine has tension, grip and mineral freshness that takes it into a long, concentrated, very stimulating and serious finish. Great purity and style here. Tasted August 2018.

    A bit lighter in color than the corresponding 2009, the garnet-red 2011 Jagini Zagersdorf opens pure, ripe and rich, but with precision and intensity. Full-bodied, mouth-filling, powerful and intense, but with a bit more finesse than 2009. Very long and with tension. I have to add, though, that the 2011, as well as the 2009, have significantly lost precision and freshness overnight on both nose and palate, whereas the finish was still fresh and tension-filled. Drink it quickly, as a 94-pointer which seems definitely more fun. I should also add that I did not have the same experience before and left the tasting table with a big question mark.

    From an old high-density plot with 50- to 100-year-old Blaufränkisch vines on the deep and loamy soils of Zagersdorf, the 2012 Jagini Zagersdorf is very pure, precise, fresh and spicy on the nose. Silky textured, with a ripe and fleshy fruit concentration, ripe tannins and great tension, this is a lovely pure and grippy red raised for three years in barrels of different sizes (500, 1500 and 1700 liters) and another year in bottle. The plot is planted with 8,000 vines per hectare (1.20 x 1.20 m) and the material is obviously from Hungary (no clones, just mass selections). Whereas the 2011 was only two years in barrels, the 2012 (and the 2013) remain three years due to the loamy soils which produces wines that develop only slowly.

The 2007 shows crystalline purity and fabulous balance from start to finish. It is a superb showing from proprietor Christoph Kunzli. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027.

    This vintage was not part of the official Le Piane Boca retrospective, but I had the chance to taste the wine during my visit to the estate. The 2015 Boca is a charming wine, with soothing and seductive fruit exuberance. Compared to the 2016 vintage (which I tasted from barrel), this 2015 edition is slightly more accessible and open. That's the characteristic of this vintage. It shows soft roundness and ripeness with extremely intact aromas of wild berry, licorice and candied raspberry.

    The 2014 Val d'Arno di Sopra BògginAnfora sees fruit sourced from a 4.5-hectare single vineyard of Sangiovese grapes. This plot also makes fruit for the blended red Torrione, but the central part of the vineyard goes through a careful selection process to make this wine. The fruit is organic. The wine is fermented in amphorae, some purchased in Spain and others using Tuscan clay from potters in Impruneta. This vintage saw a slightly shorter maceration time (compared to the 2013 vintage) only because the grape skins were more delicate in this difficult vintage. The results are very lively and tonic with bright ruby Sangiovese tones of cherry, moist earth and forest floor. I'd suggest a slightly shorter drinking window for this vintage.

    It's interesting to taste the 2014 Bòggina Anfora (Bògginanfora), Petrolo's Sangiovese done in amphora next to the same wine aged in oak. Lavender, plum, menthol, sage and sweet herbs lead into the expressive finish. This is another very pretty wine from Petrolo and proprietor Luca Sanjust.

This is a mid-weight expression of the grape that is both accessible and easy to drink straight out of the gate. It ages in neutral oak for 12 months. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

    2015 saw a return to dry and warm years like 2012, and the 2015 1902 Centenary Carignan was saved from the heat wave in July by 60 liters of rain in June. The destemmed grapes fermented with neutral yeasts in stainless steel, and the wine matured in three brand new French oak barrels for 16 months. The technical data lists almost seven grams of residual sugar, which surprised me. It's ripe, full-bodied and powerful, concentrated and juicy. It's a very powerful and heady Cariñena, with a polished texture. It feels tender and young. 864 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2017. I had the chance to taste a bottle of the never-released 2005, an experimental vintage from a year that could have some similarities with 2015, and the wine felt very balanced and still young, not showing any heat.

    The 2005 Reserva Particular de Recaredo was disgorged after 119 months in the bottle with the lees. This cuvée is a blend of 55% Xarello and 45% Macabeo from vineyards exceeding 50 years of age. All vineyards are organically and biodynamically farmed. The Xarello fermented in oak barrels and the base wine was put to referment in bottle with a cork stopper. This wine wants to keep the traditional blend of approximately same amounts of Xarello and Macabeo, which is more accessible and open, more aromatic than a pure Xarello. It might have had a little reduction, mineral perhaps, reminiscent of the diesel tones found in some Riesling. There are subtle smoke notes, yeasts, bread dough and baked brioche, incredibly subtle and elegant. 2005 was a warm and ripe year, but this wine is balanced and fresh, with a powerful palate and very tasty, with lively acidity that makes you salivate.

    I tasted two vintages of a wine that was traditionally called Brut Nature, but as all of their Cavas are Brut Nature, it was renamed in 2008 to terroirs, starting with the 2010 Terrers. It is the product of a myriad of their own vineyards in the Alt Penedès zone. By 2010, they were already applying biodynamic preparations and left a cover crop to compensate a wet season. It's a blend of 52% Xarello, 44% Macabeo and 4% Parellada with some 9% of the wine matured in barrel for a short period of time. This is the only wine where they use Parellada grapes, which have been reduced more and more, because they believe it needs higher altitude than where they were in their vineyards. This is open, aromatic and developed, with balsamic notes, even hints of camphor, yeasts and smoke. The palate is soft and creamy, quite balanced, with integrated acidity.     It's difficult to live up to the 2001, and even more in a torrid vintage, but still the 2003 Turó d'en Mota is a superb effort, a real triumph over the conditions of the vintage. Fine bakery aromas, faintly smoky, perfumed with some balsamic aromas of camphor and petrol, but no traces of heat anywhere. The wine was disgorged after more than 10 years in contact with the lees and no matter how elegant this is, it has the clear signature of the place and wouldn't be mistaken for Champagne. It's clearly a very elegant Cava, but showing its rustic side, the character of the place where the pure Xarello grows on the old vines planted on very chalky soils. Really lovely, tasty Cava, superb, not only in the context of the vintage, but also in the context of all sparkling wines in the world! 3,378 bottles produced.

    They are releasing the 2004 Turó d'en Mota after they sold the 2005, as they felt that the vintage needed more time in bottle. From this vintage onward it carries the new official denomination of Cava de Paraje Calificado. As they have done since the initial 1999, it comes from a single vineyard that gives the wine its name, and this is only the seventh vintage sold of the 19 they have produced, as it's sold after no less than 12 years (yes, YEARS!) in bottle with the lees. They consider 2004 one of the exceptional vintages in Penedès. It's pure Xarello from 0.97 hectares of vines planted in 1940 on limestone-rich soils.     The 2015 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu was matured in 20% barrel and 80% stainless steel for 18 months. It has a clean and precise bouquet that needs more coaxing than the more forward Les Fourneaux, with touches of hazelnut and smoke emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with an attacking entry, malic in the mouth and with a very saline finish. This is a straight-down-the-line classic Chablis that is perhaps more 2014 in style than 2015. This is nothing short of excellent.

    The 2015 Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons Vieilles Vignes comes from a parcel of 70-year-old vines adjacent to Sécher. Samuel Billaud commented he has found that this particular cuvée has become more saline and minerally in barrel. It has a very complex bouquet with scents of wet limestone, yellow plum and a touch of white peach. The palate is fresh on the entry with a touch of orange rind, steely and linear; it is strict for a Vaillons, with a precise and stony finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. This should represent an enticing Chablis once in bottle.

    The 2016 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu comes from three different types of vineyards at different altitudes and vine age that are blended together in the vineyard. It has a slightly austere bouquet with fine delineation: granite and flint scents. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity and is very precise and harmonious, with hints of quince and apricot toward the pretty finish. This is another very elegant wine from Samuel Billaud.

    The 2016 Chablis 1Er Cru Vaillons Vieilles Vignes comes from 70-year-old vines raised only in stainless steel. I like the aromatics here#this has a sense of purpose with vivid scents of orange zest and a touch of lychee. The palate is tensile right from the start thanks to that killer line of acidity. There is great depth here and the harmonious finish feels assured and elegant. Great potential and for me this is a serious step up from the Chablis Village and certainly worth the few extra dollars.

    The 2017 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre is excellent, offering up an already complex bouquet of lemon oil, confit citrus, dried white flowers, honeycomb and fresh croissant. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, powerful and satiny, with lovely depth at the core and an impressive sense of completeness. It promises to be one of the highlights of Samuel Billaud's 2017 collection.

    The 2017 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu is very promising, wafting from the glass with notes of citrus blossom and pastry cream. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a blocky, tight-knit core and tangy balancing acids. It's one of the more structurally reserved wines in the range, and I suspect it will need some time in bottle too.

    The 2017 Chablis Mont de Milieu comes from three parcels of 35, 60 and 80-year old vines in different parts of the vineyard that crop at just 25hl/ha. It has a classic Chablis bouquet with a potent sea influence, oyster shells and cockles, and a whiff of kelp. The palate is beautifully balanced with a crisp line of acidity, very harmonious and elegant, the 20% barrel maturation just lending a little more weight to the finish. Superb.

    The 2015 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros has a splendid bouquet with a very subtle reductive note. There is real delineation and poise here, with walnut and smoke emerging with time and struck flint emerging later. The palate is well defined with a fine bead of acidity (although the acidity level is lower than in Blanchot). Touches of blackcurrant leaf and quince dovetail into a very energetic finish that lingers for over a minute. Superb.

    The 2016 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos offers up a classy bouquet of preserved lemon, subtle peach, honeycomb, fresh croissants and white flowers. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and layered, with considerable power and chewy extract, displaying excellent depth and energy. It's a serious wine, but it will be quite open-knit and accessible by the standards of Les Clos.
