    The 2013 Barolo le Vigne is another stellar achievement from Luciano Sandrone and his family. Since 2010, the blend for this wine has been tweaked just a bit to include more fruit from the Baudana cru in Serralunga d'Alba. This wine shows a ripe and succulent mouthfeel with ample richness and power that drives the wine smoothly over the palate. These darker qualities can be attributed to the Baudana fruit that is known for power and heft. Fruit from the Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto offers delicate perfumes and ethereal elegance. This vineyard site is home to loose, sandy soils. The combination of these two extremes is simply delightful.

    Sandrone's 2013 Barolo Le Vigne is a real stunner. Powerful, ample and deep, the 2013 exudes class from start to finish. The addition of Serralunga fruit in the blend has added depth and structure in all of the wine's dimensions. Dark red cherry, plum, mint, rose petal, tar and licorice build into the huge, voluptuous finish. Readers who can find the 2013 should not hesitate, as it is outrageously beautiful and also one of the clear wines of the vintage. Vineyard sites are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli.

    Luciano Sandrone expected this would be a beautiful year for Nebbiolo, with fruit showing the qualities of an important wine all throughout the growing season and right up to harvest. And yes, the 2015 Barolo le Vigne did turn out to be a great vintage, with a full aromatic array of perfumed rose, lavender and violet. For all of its generosity and expressiveness, with just a beautiful bouquet that sings out a seductive mezzo-soprano aria, be forewarned that in the mouth this is followed by rigidity and nervousness. That explosive bouquet might mislead you into thinking this is a rather evolved wine, but you certainly feel its youth on the palate. To be frank, this was an easy year to make wine, and it's not a big surprise that this edition of le Vigne turned out to be as classic and as good as it is. It should get even better with time.

    The 2015 Barolo Le Vigne is a wine of pure and extreme grace. Silky and nuanced on the palate, with tremendous character, the 2015 is all class. Rose petal, mint and sweet red berry fruit are laced together in this super-expressive Barolo. Medium in body, with radiant fruit and brisk tannins, the 2015 Le Vigne is a terrific example of the vintage at its best. Today, the 2015 is decidedly reticent. I have seen Le Vigne open up with time in bottle. I imagine that will be the case here as well, although the wine is quite closed down at this stage. Vineyard sources are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli.

    Glänzendes, sattes Rubin mit leichtem Granatrand. Sehr intensive und blitzsaubere Nase, nach Himbeere, etwas Safran, Zwetschke, einladend. Zeigt am Gaumen schöne saftige Frucht, breitet sich mit Druck, aber auch mit Eleganz aus, engmaschiges Tannin, zugleich sehr geschmeidig, tänzelt dahin.

    Now with the distance of time, the 2009 harvest was perhaps not as elegant (generally speaking) as the 2008, but mercifully cooler than the 2007. A ten-year late release, the 2009 Barolo Le Vigne Sibi et Paucis offers plenty of dense, black fruit, along with succulence and plumpness. This vintage of Le Vigne sourced fruit from Monforte d#Alba, but this is no longer the case in the vintage to follow. The tannic structure is there, and this wine seems to be held together with a magical string. You'll find warm, earthy tones covering the whole mouth evenly. As elegant as this Barolo is, I'd be tempted to pair its dark fruit and earthy notes with a simple homemade pasta with sausage, onion and sautéed chanterelles or any other home-cooked dish that is near to your heart.

    Peter Wegelin's single-vineyard 2016 Malanser Blauburgunder Scadena is from very calcareous slate soils from a clos that is located below the Bothmar castle. The wine was aged for 12 months in 80% new barriques and another 12 months in used tonneaux. The bouquet is deep, intensely ripe and fruity as well as toasty but very elegant. The palate is full-bodied, dense and tightly structured, with fine but grippy tannins and good acidity. This clear-cut 2016 needs lots of aeration (or time), but its vitality and tension is promising. Release date: autumn this year. Tasted January 2019.

    The 2017 Burgenland Blaufränkisch is pure and fruity on the fresh, precise nose and offers a charm, which is quite rare given this wild and spicy grape variety. Silky and intense on the palate, this is a fleshy, well-concentrated and pretty intense red from the deep and clayey soils of Zagersdorf. The fine, cultivated tannins are intermixed with refreshing, Pinot-like acidity, and the finish is aromatic, taut and dry, like thick cherry skins. Gorgeous. Tasted October 2018.

    From an old high-density plot with 50- to 100-year-old Blaufränkisch vines on the deep and loamy soils of Zagersdorf, the 2012 Jagini Zagersdorf is very pure, precise, fresh and spicy on the nose. Silky textured, with a ripe and fleshy fruit concentration, ripe tannins and great tension, this is a lovely pure and grippy red raised for three years in barrels of different sizes (500, 1500 and 1700 liters) and another year in bottle. The plot is planted with 8,000 vines per hectare (1.20 x 1.20 m) and the material is obviously from Hungary (no clones, just mass selections). Whereas the 2011 was only two years in barrels, the 2012 (and the 2013) remain three years due to the loamy soils which produces wines that develop only slowly.

    This vintage was not part of the official Le Piane Boca retrospective, but I had the chance to taste the wine during my visit to the estate. The 2015 Boca is a charming wine, with soothing and seductive fruit exuberance. Compared to the 2016 vintage (which I tasted from barrel), this 2015 edition is slightly more accessible and open. That's the characteristic of this vintage. It shows soft roundness and ripeness with extremely intact aromas of wild berry, licorice and candied raspberry.

    Tenuta le Colonne is an estate I have never visited, but I feel like I have because I spent a good amount of time over by their neighbors during my last trip to Bolgheri. This property and Tenuta Argentiera look onto each other and are absolutely blessed by some of the most magnificent positioning possible along the Tuscan Coast. The vineyard that produces the 2015 Bolgheri Superiore spans from the seashore at five meters above sea level to 150 meters. This is a darkly concentrated wine with rich aromas of blackberry, ripe current, spice and tobacco. This is a structured, firm wine that sits squarely on the palate.

    The just-bottled red 2018 Bozeto de Exopto is a superb young and fruit-driven blend of 50% Tempranillo and 40% Garnacha with a 10% pinch of Graciano to add freshness. The destemmed but uncrushed grapes fermented in stainless steel, concrete and oak containers with indigenous yeasts and matured for six months, the Garnacha in concrete, the Tempranillo in oak vats and a blend of Tempranillo and Graciano in well-seasoned barriques. 2018 was clearly a cool, Atlantic vintage (as opposed to Mediterranean vintages), and the grapes ripened slowly; some of the grapes (the Garnacha) were harvested later than ever. This juicy and fruit-driven young red is aromatic and more fluid, fresher and approachable. The palate is fresh and light, a wine to enjoy without moderation! 75,000 bottles produced make this 75% of the production of the winery. It was bottled in April 2019.

    This wine sees fruit sourced from the warm and sunny Maremma area on coastal Tuscany. The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon shows an inky dark appearance with dark garnet color saturation. It offers a fine and chiseled aromatic profile with dark berry fruit followed by spice, anise seeds and an unmistakable balsamic note that reminds me of eucalyptus oil. This is a mid-weight expression of the grape that is both accessible and easy to drink straight out of the gate. It ages in neutral oak for 12 months. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

    This is the wine that put Brancaia on the map of Tuscany's most celebrated estates. A blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Sangiovese and a smaller percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (fermented with indigenous yeasts in conical steel vats and aged in new and neutral barrique for 20 months), the 2015 Il Blu is a wine that enthusiastically embraces the energy, heat and sunshine of the vintage. The fruit is dark and slightly sweet with aromas of black cherries and dried blackberries. Those flavors deliver rich, soft intensity. The wine is not quite full-bodied, because the mouthfeel is elegant and finessed, but it does deliver lasting power, freshness and polished tannins.

    This blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Sangiovese and a smaller percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon has one of the most impressive track records of a modern Tuscan blend that I can think of. The 2016 Il Blu is a beautifully balanced and precise blend that pits the freshness and authenticity of Sangiovese against the softness and fruitiness of the Merlot. Although the Sangiovese plays a supporting role in the blend, its influence and signature go far to creating the overall identity of this special wine. It's a very nice effort to celebrate with a grilled T-bone.

    Deep, dark and sophisticated, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Corte Pavone is a solid buy from this vintage. The wine opens to an inky dark appearance and a deep garnet color. The aromas span over to black fruit, oak spice, tobacco and espresso. They definitely represent the more contemporary side of the Sangiovese bouquet. There is good textural firmness and volume here to glue all those strong flavors tightly together.
