    The 2011 Barolo Le Vigne is an opulent and shapely wine with a point of extra cherry softness that you don't get in the 2011 Barolo Cannubi Boschis. That wine shows more austerity and vigor compared to this expression. But Le Vigne delivers an unexpected touch of roundness and opulence that fits the historic profile of this beautiful rendition of Nebbiolo. It presents a slightly more immediate style but it also has the inner grace and poise for a long cellar evolution.

    Sandrone's 2011 Barolo Le Vigne is sweet, silky and exceptionally polished in the glass. Sweet floral notes, bright red berries, subtle spices and mint are all laced together nicely in the glass. Le Vigne is a blend of fruit from multiple vineyard sources. This is the first year in which Villero is part of the blend.

The bouquet is round and plush with thick layers of dark cherry marmalade, blackberry preserves and dark currant. Beyond those apparent fruit aromas, Le Vigne offers dark spice and licorice with a beautiful menthol signature on the finish. The wine's natural structure is padded by soft tannins and lush fruit consistency. In all, this important wine is less vibrant and distinctive compared to other excellent vintages such as 2008 and 2010. The 2012 Luciano Sandrone wines are very good, but remain far from the amazing heights achieved by this historic winery in the best years. Like many of the wines from this vintage (across the various townships that make up the appellation), they are slightly less expressive and they speak at a lower volume.

    The 2013 Barolo le Vigne is another stellar achievement from Luciano Sandrone and his family. Since 2010, the blend for this wine has been tweaked just a bit to include more fruit from the Baudana cru in Serralunga d'Alba. This wine shows a ripe and succulent mouthfeel with ample richness and power that drives the wine smoothly over the palate. These darker qualities can be attributed to the Baudana fruit that is known for power and heft. Fruit from the Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto offers delicate perfumes and ethereal elegance. This vineyard site is home to loose, sandy soils. The combination of these two extremes is simply delightful.

The addition of Serralunga fruit in the blend has added depth and structure in all of the wine's dimensions. Dark red cherry, plum, mint, rose petal, tar and licorice build into the huge, voluptuous finish. Readers who can find the 2013 should not hesitate, as it is outrageously beautiful and also one of the clear wines of the vintage. Vineyard sites are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli.

Many are quick to dismiss it given the difficulties of the growing season that saw abundant rain, hail and bombe d'acqua, or "water bombs," which are a dangerous phenomenon with intense rainfall in a very small radius. But hard work does pay off. The Sandrone family employed 38 people for farming, when the average harvest requires only 22 pairs of vineyard hands. Great care was required to keep the leaves and the clusters healthy. The 2014 Barolo le Vigne is bright and fruit-forward. It is perhaps more accessible in the near term compared to past editions. It delivers dark fruit nuances over a mid-weight and compact mouthfeel.

    Sandrone's 2008 Barolo Le Vigne is a wine of breathtaking textural finesse and elegance. Nothing really stands out, so phenomenal is the wine's balance and sense of harmony. This is the kind of wine that is easy to overlook because it doesn't ask for attention and isn't showy. Instead, everything is simply in the right place. The finest, most silky of tannins support a core of sweet red berries, flowers, mint and spices, all of which are woven together with total refinement. The eternal, nuanced finish bodes very well for the future. This is a dazzling effort from Luciano and Luca Sandrone. Le Vigne is made from parcels in Vignane, Ceretta, Conterni and Merli. In 2008 there is a little less Vignane as part of the vineyard was hit by hail. There is little question that the blending of fruit from several sites was a huge advantage in 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028

    Peter Wegelin's single-vineyard 2016 Malanser Blauburgunder Scadena is from very calcareous slate soils from a clos that is located below the Bothmar castle. The wine was aged for 12 months in 80% new barriques and another 12 months in used tonneaux. The bouquet is deep, intensely ripe and fruity as well as toasty but very elegant. The palate is full-bodied, dense and tightly structured, with fine but grippy tannins and good acidity. This clear-cut 2016 needs lots of aeration (or time), but its vitality and tension is promising. Release date: autumn this year. Tasted January 2019.

    Stäger's 2015 Pinot Noir Barrique from Maienfeld has a dark ruby color and offers a pure, deep, fresh, spicy/flinty and elegant bouquet of ripe dark fruits. Full-bodied, vital and fresh on the palate, with a tiny bit of CO2 and a tight, vital structure as well as lingering minerals and fine tannins, this is a stunningly good wine with a long, complex finish. Still terribly young but vibrant and tight, this 2015 has great aging potential of at least 15 years. Ex-cellar price: 30 CHF. Tasted in Zurich, August 2017.

    The 2014 Malanser Blauburgunder Reserva has a dark purple color and opens with a very toasty but also floral, slatey bouquet of perfectly ripe cherry and dark berry aromas. Full-bodied, ripe and sweet on the silky palate, this is an intense and stunningly powerful Pinot Noir for that difficult vintage. Its fruit is quite developed, but the wine is still very firm and provided with lots of mealy tannins that are still a bit dry on the finish. This is an excellent long-distance runner that should be cellared for another 7-8 years.

The nose offers concentrated red and dark fruit that was perhaps struggling for ripeness and hides some earthy, greenish or leafy notes and some nougat aromas. Smooth and round on the palate, this is an elegant and rather charming Blaufränkisch with concentrated and fleshy cherry fruit on the spicy finish. The tannins are a bit more rough here but also spicy. Pair this with dark, roasted meat. Tasted October 2018.

Silky and intense on the palate, this is a fleshy, well-concentrated and pretty intense red from the deep and clayey soils of Zagersdorf. The fine, cultivated tannins are intermixed with refreshing, Pinot-like acidity, and the finish is aromatic, taut and dry, like thick cherry skins. Gorgeous. Tasted October 2018.

    Heinrich's 2015 Blaufränkisch Leithaberg is from the southeast-facing vineyard slopes of Jois, Winden and Breitenbrunn, where the vines root in limestone, limestone-sandstone, slate and mica schist soils. Fermented for three weeks in open wooden fermenters and aged for 20 months in old 500-liter barrels, this is a deep, pure, spicy and noble-flavored red wine with fine terroir and fruit aromas. Full-bodied, very elegant, remarkably salty and long on the fresh and refined palate, this is an excellent Blaufränkisch from the Leithaberg DAC. The wine has tension, grip and mineral freshness that takes it into a long, concentrated, very stimulating and serious finish. Great purity and style here. Tasted August 2018.

    A bit lighter in color than the corresponding 2009, the garnet-red 2011 Jagini Zagersdorf opens pure, ripe and rich, but with precision and intensity. Full-bodied, mouth-filling, powerful and intense, but with a bit more finesse than 2009. Very long and with tension. I have to add, though, that the 2011, as well as the 2009, have significantly lost precision and freshness overnight on both nose and palate, whereas the finish was still fresh and tension-filled. Drink it quickly, as a 94-pointer which seems definitely more fun. I should also add that I did not have the same experience before and left the tasting table with a big question mark.

    From an old high-density plot with 50- to 100-year-old Blaufränkisch vines on the deep and loamy soils of Zagersdorf, the 2012 Jagini Zagersdorf is very pure, precise, fresh and spicy on the nose. Silky textured, with a ripe and fleshy fruit concentration, ripe tannins and great tension, this is a lovely pure and grippy red raised for three years in barrels of different sizes (500, 1500 and 1700 liters) and another year in bottle. The plot is planted with 8,000 vines per hectare (1.20 x 1.20 m) and the material is obviously from Hungary (no clones, just mass selections). Whereas the 2011 was only two years in barrels, the 2012 (and the 2013) remain three years due to the loamy soils which produces wines that develop only slowly.

    The 2007 Le Piane is once again terrific. This dazzling red literally explodes onto the palate. Sweet red berries, rose petals, mint and mountain herbs are just some of the nuances that take shape in the glass. The warm vintage has given the wine a little more body than normal without overpowering the weightless, elegant style readers who know these wines are familiar with. The 2007 shows crystalline purity and fabulous balance from start to finish. It is a superb showing from proprietor Christoph Kunzli. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027.

    This vintage was not part of the official Le Piane Boca retrospective, but I had the chance to taste the wine during my visit to the estate. The 2015 Boca is a charming wine, with soothing and seductive fruit exuberance. Compared to the 2016 vintage (which I tasted from barrel), this 2015 edition is slightly more accessible and open. That's the characteristic of this vintage. It shows soft roundness and ripeness with extremely intact aromas of wild berry, licorice and candied raspberry.

This is a darkly concentrated wine with rich aromas of blackberry, ripe current, spice and tobacco. This is a structured, firm wine that sits squarely on the palate.

    The 2014 Val d'Arno di Sopra BògginAnfora sees fruit sourced from a 4.5-hectare single vineyard of Sangiovese grapes. This plot also makes fruit for the blended red Torrione, but the central part of the vineyard goes through a careful selection process to make this wine. The fruit is organic. The wine is fermented in amphorae, some purchased in Spain and others using Tuscan clay from potters in Impruneta. This vintage saw a slightly shorter maceration time (compared to the 2013 vintage) only because the grape skins were more delicate in this difficult vintage. The results are very lively and tonic with bright ruby Sangiovese tones of cherry, moist earth and forest floor. I'd suggest a slightly shorter drinking window for this vintage.

    It's interesting to taste the 2014 Bòggina Anfora (Bògginanfora), Petrolo's Sangiovese done in amphora next to the same wine aged in oak. The amphora wine is initially a bit softer and creamier in its contours, but it also offers less development in the glass. Lavender, plum, menthol, sage and sweet herbs lead into the expressive finish. This is another very pretty wine from Petrolo and proprietor Luca Sanjust.

This is a mid-weight expression of the grape that is both accessible and easy to drink straight out of the gate. It ages in neutral oak for 12 months. Some 20,000 bottles were made.
