Clear, deep and dense, but multilayered on the nose, the 2013 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Loibner Steinertal displays herbal-scented notes of legumes and super-ripe as well as concentrated Veltliner berries. Full-bodied, powerful and rich, but also very elegant and fresh with finesse on the palate, this well-structured, mineral wine is already accessible but should gain even more finesse with further bottle age.

Helles Gelbgrün. Attraktive gelbe Apfelfrucht, zarte rauchige Würze, dunkle Mineralik, feiner Blütenhonig im Hintergrund. Komplex, saftige gelbe Tropenfruchtanklänge, feiner Säurebogen, extraktsüßer Abgang, feinwürzig, dezente Apfelfrucht auch im Nachhall, salziger Rückgeschmack, sicheres Reifepotenzial.

Pichler's 2013 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Loibner Loibenberg shows a very clear, lemon-fresh, herbal-flavored and complex bouquet leading to a vibrant, spicy, tension-filled, yet every elegant and expressive, palate. And this rich and full-bodied wine dances over the palate, followed by a very long and complex finish. A great Veltliner, indeed.

From the central part of the Loibenberg, and thus with more loess on the terraces (so a deeper soil), Alzinger's 2015 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Loibenberg offers a very clear and elegant bouquet with tobacco and white-pepper aromas intermixed with ripe, white-fruit aromas. Round, piquant and intense on the palate this full-bodied and rich Veltliner reveals a densely woven texture and a long and aromatic finish with a nice salinity in the finish. Very juicy and charming in its intensity and generous ripeness. Pretty stimulating for such a rich wine.

The 2015 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Wösendorf Kirchweg offers an elegant and aromatic bouquet of ripe and overripe white fruits along with yeasty flavors. Round and smooth on the palate, with fine tannins, good grip and nice bitterness in the finish, this is a full-bodied and elegant Veltliner with a lingering salinity and a stimulating grip.

Picked near the end of October, this smells of ripe apricot and white peach that could come from a Riesling, but accompanied by snap pea and cress. These elements complement one another delightfully on a silken-textured palate that exhibits unexpected lift for a relatively late-picked Smaragd. The richly-sustained finish lends a hint of caramel to the luscious pit fruits, yet there is a striking sense of vibrancy as well as of transparency to stony, crystalline, and iodine-like mineral notes. Crunchy, nippy snap pea and cress rise to the task of invigoration, while a suggestion of shrimp-shell reduction serves to stimulate the salivary glands and encourage, indeed practically compel, the next sip. As Irmgard Hirtzberger points out, since the family's first wine from these vines was a 2010 (and the 2014 fruit was blended into that vintage's Rotes Tor Federspiel), assessments of ageworthiness must be considered tentative. But given our track record with

Full-bodied, intense and mineral, this is an elegant and firmly structured wine that is fresher and more pure than the Loibenberg Riesling. From probably the warmest vineyard of the Wachau, the 2015 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Loibner Loibenberg is a full-bodied, rich and intense, very juicy, but also piquant and mineral Veltliner with tobacco flavors on the nose. Dense and with an old-vines intensity, this Loibenberg offers ripe yellow stone fruits with a tropical touch, but is also very well structred and finishes with a long and salty aftertaste. An impressive wine.

The 2016 Ried Steinertal Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is from the coolest Grüner Veltliner single vineyard of the Pichler family, with sandy gneiss and granite soils. The 2016 opens with a clear and fresh but also intense fruit aroma that is still a bit discreet on the nose. The attack on the palate is really fresh and piquant due to remarkable acidity. The wine is pure and mineral, shows a good phenolic grip and reveals white fruit aromas like yellow-skinned apples. The finish is clear, fresh and grippy and shows some attractive crispy fruit flavors. This is a lean, elegant, well balanced, medium to full-bodied Grüner Veltliner with less than 13% alcohol. Tasted as a sample in early July 2017. Scheduled for bottling in late July 2017.

A stunning mirabelle, herbal and flinty nose that's as intense as it is delicate. The muscular leanness of a long-distance runner combined with enormous minerality make this a very special grüner veltliner with an extremely long, exciting finish. You could drink it now, but this will age for at least a couple of decades.

The 2016 Ried Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is from the warmest vineyard of the family. Coming from a steep, terraced, very skeletal cru with iron-rich gneiss soils, the 2016 opens with a super clear, cool, fresh and well-defined nose that comes along with herbal and flinty notes but still indicates ripe and concentrated fruit from a warm vineyard. Full-bodied, round and intense, with perfectly ripe and warm fruit, this is a pure, piquant and crisp Grüner Veltliner with very good grip and mineral freshness. The finish is quite lush, the mineral structure, salinity and freshness stimulating. Lucas Pichler says that, in warmer vintages, he picks the vineyard ten days earlier than his father did and without botrytis to keep the freshness and elegance. His 2016 is great proof of that, although it was not a warm vintage. Tasted as a sample in early July, three weeks before the bottling.

The 2016 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd M is sourced in the Loibenberg (50%), Kellerberg and Liebenberg and was picked very late, with ripe and over-ripe berries that give intense and concentrated fruit aromas. The M tries to extract the "Maximum" from Grüner Veltliner and was macerated for 24 hours before the juice was fermented in a newer 5,000-liter barrel from Franz Stockinger. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, ripe, rich, elegant, rather smooth and powerful but still piquant and salty Grüner Veltliner with firm but fine tannins and lingering fruit. This is a very different style compared to the crus from Lucas Pichler.

A strikingly and - for this cepage - unusually citric nose and palate encompass kumquat and pineapple for a piquant and tangy yet tropical, lusciously ripe impression; nor does this wine want in the least for palpable density. And all of this has been achieved at a modest 12.7% alcohol, lending a remarkable sense of lift. The finish here is clear and ringing, introducing site-typical pepper and tobacco while offering crystalline stoniness, floral perfume and green herbal essences. It#s the lightest Grüner Veltliner Smaragd I have ever bottled<(>,<)> notes Lucas Pichler, and I#m confident we#d have to go well back in estate history to find a lower-alcohol exemplar rendered by his father. Bottled in early August, this spent May and June in cask, but was otherwise in tank.

94/100 Punkte Vinous, December 2018 Once again these vines have provided generous fruitiness - here, Riesling-like, glowingly pit-tinged white peach, mirabelle and lime - as well as haunting, bittersweet inner-mouth perfume and deep, mouthwateringly saline, savory richness suggestive of raw scallop. A satiny feel reinforces the impressions of ripeness and marrowy richness conveyed by the flavors. And like this year#s Rotes Tor Federspiel, we have here a tactile sense of active, stony mineral impingement that lends vibrancy to the near-endlessly juicy finish. Despite this wine#s harboring roughly 13.5% alcohol, it evinces a welcome sense of lift. It is a generous and rather smooth Veltliner compared to the fresh and finessed Steinertal or the firmly structured Liebenberg. Its finish is long, intense and powerful and reveals tropical fruit aromas. Tasted in July 2017, one week after the bottling.

The 2016 Ried Steinertal Grüner Veltliner Smaragd has a coolish and flinty flavored nose of perfectly ripe and concentrated white and yellow-fleshed fruits. Full-bodied and juicy on the palate, this Veltliner balances its richness and fruit intensity with finesse, freshness, fine minerals and tannins. The finish is well structured, long, intense and powerful. I'd keep the 2016 for another three or four years before I'd serve it. Tasted in July 2017, one week after the bottling.

Lovely acacia blossom aromas open this white, followed by flavors of apricot, vanilla and lentil. The full-bodied profile is structured by a bright beam of acidity. Well-balanced overall, this shows fine varietal character, ending with a lingering aftertaste of savory mineral. Drink now through 2029.

From the lower part of the cru, the 2015 Loibner Grüner Veltliner Ried Loibenberg Smaragd offers a well-defined, flinty and elegant bouquet of ripe white fruit aromas. Full-bodied, intense and mineral, this is an elegant and firmly structured wine that is fresher and more pure than the Loibenberg Riesling. A stunning GV that is pretty coolish and finesse-full, not just for the vintage but also the vineyard.

The 2015 Loibner Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Vinothekfülllung is clear and intense on the nose, very ripe, bit still precise and smoky in its white-fruit aromas. Full-bodied, rich and elegant this is a velvet-textured wine with a lot of power and a bit of bitter flavors in the finish.

Originating as usual (in order of magnitude) from Kreutles, Loibenberg and Kellerberg, this opens with musky floral perfume, then projects aromatically as well as on the palate a dark, savory richness of Burley tobacco allied to bittersweet, earthy roasted parsnip and rutabaga. Full, expansive and subtly oily in feel, yet with what Knoll senior concurs is a surprising sense of animation and tangy, peachy primary juiciness for a Vinothek bottling, this finishes with accents of smoky black tea, iodine, and spicy Madagascar peppercorn.
