From 66-year-old vines planted on the gneiss and quartzite soils in the steep Dürnstein cru, the 2017 Ried Höhereck Grüner Veltliner Smaragd displays an intense, fine and elegant nose with delicate citric and flinty-mineral notes. Very fine and elegant on the palate, with intense and well-concentrated fruit and lots of body, this is a rich and powerful but refined and well-balanced Smaragd with lingering piquant minerality. Bottled in June 2018. Tasted in Dürnstein/Wachau, September 2018.

The 2017 Spitz Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Rotes Tor is very delicate and elegant on the nose. Rich, lush and powerful on the palate, this is an intense, firmly structured and persistent yet elegant Veltliner with lots of tension and impressive length. Tasted in Spitz, September 2018.

Quite a powerful dry white, but with wonderful elegance. The balance of mirabelle and fresh-herb aromas and fresh acidity is spot on. Ripe and lively finish. Drink or hold.

The 2017 Ried Steinertal Riesling Smaragd is intense and flinty on the dark and stony, very flinty and coolish nose with its concentrated white peach and lime aromas. Full-bodied, sharp, super pure and mineral on the palate, this is a full-bodied, tight, fresh and serious wine with a long and tensioned but still terribly young finish. Great complexity and tension! One of the finest Rieslings from the Danube River in 2017. Tasted in Oberloiben/Wachau, September 2018.

Cool and herbal with a hint of wet ferns. In spite of the considerable concentration, it remains sleek and straight with a long, uncompromisingly mineral finish. Drink or hold.

As elegant as it is concentrated, this is breathtaking grüner veltliner that leaves you dazed by myriad nuances that run the entire fruit spectrum, from apples to pineapples. Then, on the dramatic finish, comes an entire microcosm of herbs. Astonishingly bright and lively for such elevated ripeness. Drink or hold.

Mittleres Grüngelb. Mit frischen Wiesenkräutern unterlegte gelbe Apfelfrucht, zart nach Mango, dunkle Mineralik klingt an, feine tabakige Nuancen. Saftig, angenehme Extraktsüße, feiner Säurebogen, bleibt sehr gut haften, kraftvoll, aber balanciert, feine Zitrusanklänge im Finish, sehr gutes Reifepotenzial.

With his 2012 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Steinertal, says Lucas Pichler, the aim is to showcase the vineyard, which is a cool site, whereas in Loiben, really, things are (generally) a bit too warm. Prior to this solo debut spurred by the acquisition of a second parcel the Pichlers Gruner Veltliner from this site went into their Loibenberg (and M). This solo Steinertal projects delightfully luscious and exuberant pear and melon fruit along with saliva-inducing, metaphorically cooling suggestions of stalk celery. A sweet-smoky bite of Szechuan pepper lends invigoration and cut to a juicily protracted finish. A model of elegance and lift allied to fundamentally rich ripeness, it should perform beautifully through at least 2022.

The 2015 Langenlois Spiegel 1ÖTW displays deep, rich, perfectly ripe yet pure, fresh and delicate fruit with herbal and even mineral aromas that give a beautiful transparency and finesse. Full-bodied, rich and mineral on the palate, this is a very elegant, vital and well-structured Grüner Veltliner in beautiful balance. It has fine tannins, lingering salinity and tension. Perfect to drink today but the 2015 will still shine in ten or more years from now. The Spiegel is more round, rich and feminine than the Käferberg, which is more pure, fresh and piquant due to the partly crystalline soils. Tasted in July 2017.

Wow, was für eine strahlende Frucht (Kernobst, reife Birne, Quitte), fein und elegant, ohne überbordend zu wirken. Tolle länge am Gaumen, knackige Säure und ein diskretes, edles Pfefferl im Finale. Klassisch!

The 2016 Feuersbrunner Spiegel 1ÖTW is a Grüner Veltliner that opens with a clear and intense, very attractive tropical fruit aroma of mango and passion fruit with some spicy stony aromas. Fresh, round and piquant on the palate, this is a well structured and juicy Veltliner with a stimulatingly pure, salty and refreshing finish. The aftertaste is long and very aromatic again and reveals the full body again without being overloaded. It is a delicious Spiegel with a long and tensioned, clear, almost dry, well structured finish. I tasted this enormously stimulating 2016 as a sample at Schloss Gobelsburg in July 2017.

Picked on September 28, Ott's 2017 Grüner Veltliner Ried Feuersbrunner Spiegel 1ÖTW is very clear, subtle and elegant on the distinctive nose. In early September 2018, the nose displayed white stone fruits intertwined with refreshing, refining gravelly and floral notes. Later that month, the wine showed tropical notes on the intensely fruity, elegant, sexy nose. Full-bodied, rich and dense on the palate, with intense, lush, concentrated fruit and vitalizing, fine acidity, this is a very persistent and powerful Veltliner with a very long, forward, mineral and tensioned finish. This is a powerful but elegant giant and needs time to gain finesse and transparency. The elegance here, however, is remarkable. Tasted twice in early and late September 2018.

From gneiss soils covered with white and red sand and finally loess, the 2015 Engabrunner Stein 1ÖTW Grüner Veltliner is a very clear, deep and flinty flavored wine with superripe white-fruit aromas on the nose. Rich and elegant on the palate. this is a generously fruity but precise and tension-filled Veltliner with a lush texture and a precisely mineral piquancy in the pure and salty finish. An impressive Veltliner full of grip and aging potential. Due to hail damage yields were very, very low in 2015 and only 4'000 liters of the 2015 Stein have been bottled from 5.25 hectares of vines. It was the deadline day of this issue (June 3) when I got the chance to taste the 2015s of Mister Veltliner Bernhard Ott, one of the leading wine estates in the Wagram region, if not the whole Danube valley. These wines, especially the grands crus or Erste Lage wines from Grüner Veltliner (indicated on the label as 1ÖTW), are the greatest wines Ott has bott

Coming from gneiss soils covered with white and red sand and finally loess, the 2016 Engabrunner Stein 1ÖTW is Ott's one and only Kamptal Grüner Veltliner. Intensely citrus-colored, the wine opens with a clear and flinty bouquet of perfectly ripe white fruits and exciting citrus aromas. Round, finessed and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, complex and mineral Veltliner with intense and lingering fruit aromas that are almost tropical. Although the 2016 is a bit too sweet for my taste, and also lunch or dinner, it is well structured due to the fine acidity and perfectly integrated minerality. Mind, though, that as soon as the CO2 has disappeared, the wine will taste sweeter than in the beginning. Tasted as a sample at Schloss Gobelsburg in July 2017.
