The 2017 Bianco del Ticino Granito blends Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris and Blanc and opens with a clear, intensely floral and refreshing bouquet of ripe fruit aromas intertwined with notes of crushed stones and some oak. Precise and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense, tight and seriously structured white with ripe fruit, tension-giving minerals and fine bitters on the finish. The oak influence is palatable but moderate, and the wine has good, refreshing length with some fine tannins and stimulating salinity. This is an excellent white to have with a big, fat fish or good risotto. It is still very young though. Tasted in October 2019.

A few years after releasing the centenary Carignan wine, they decided to bottle a 2015 1903 Centenary Grenache, with a similar approach and philosophy. The grapes are sourced from their oldest family vineyards in the village of Poboleda, basically from two vineyards where they have both Garnacha and Cariñena; but they were picked, fermented and aged separately. The 2015 vintage is not an easy one, perhaps a little too dry and ripe for Garnacha but better for Cariñena; the wine shows high ripeness and is a bit jammy on the nose, with better balance in the palate, where it shows good balance and freshness. It's a bit of a heady Garnacha, an intoxicating wine, showy, open, expressive and impressive. The destemmed grapes fermented in stainless steel, and the wine matured in new and used 225- and 500-liter barrels to complete some 16 months of aging. 600 bottles were filled in May 2017. This will be released in 2018. I cannot wait to taste future v

The 2017 Grüner Veltliner Der Ott displays a clear, bright and yeasty bouquet with nutty aromas. This is delicate, but is it deep and complex or even sexy as well? Creamy and again yeasty on the palate, this is a pure, fresh and textured Veltliner with a remarkable long and salty finish with caramel flavors. Still young but with a very convincing finish, this is an excellent wine to be served with codfish or slightly toasted white fish. Tasted in December 2019.

Assembling the fruit from several vineyards that were picked in the first half of October, the 2018 Spitz Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Rotes Tor offers a clear, ripe and elegant nose of tropical fruits intermixed with elegant and flinty terroir notes. Ripe and piquant on the crystalline and salty palate, this is an elegant and already pretty complex Veltliner with an aromatic and refreshing, elegant finish with good grip. 12.5% alcohol. Beautifully clear, intense and elegant on the nose, the 2014 Grüner Veltliner Lamm 1ÖTW from the southeastern footslope of the Heiligenstein displays a lovely mix of herbs, domestic fruits and earthy flavors. Straight, fresh and mineral on the palate, this is a medium-weighted but very intense and firmly structured Veltliner with loads of salt and stones. Very dense, intense and long, this is an expressive wine and probably one of the finest Veltliners that have been produced along the Danube in 2014. For advanced wine lovers only.

Hirsch's 2012 Gruner Veltliner Lamm is fascinatingly Chablis-like in its aromatics and savor, projecting salted, herbed chicken and mushroom stock mingled with salivary gland-milking oyster liquor. Full, expansive and palpably extract rich, this finishes with impressive grip if also with a bit of extraneous bitterness not anticipated from the nose or the initial palate impression. Expect this to pique appetites and attention at table through at least 2022, and quite possibly to reveal yet greater profundity.

Tasted from the vat two weeks before bottling in late June 2017, the 2016 Kamptal Grüner Veltliner Renner 1ÖTW shows a pure, fresh and bright bouquet of white fruits along with some lemon flavors. The wine is intense and fresh in its mineral purity, very well structured and develops a fruity and stimulatingly salty finish. The acidity is remarkably fresh. The Renner comes from the bottom of the western part of the Kammerner Gaisberg where the vines root in calcareous silt soils and can age for 8 years or more.

From the very warm bottom of the southeastern part of the Heiligenstein, the 2016 Kamptal Grüner Veltliner Lamm 1ÖTW opens deep, rich and smoky/flinty on the intense and ripe yet fresh and precise nose with its lemon zest aromas. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and mouth-filling Veltliner with stunning purity, piquancy and a coolish mineral grip in the well structured finish. Fine tannins help to keep the tension of this monolithic and age-worthy Veltliner that needs two or three years to gain finesse and relaxation. Picked over two weeks between the middle of September and early October, the 2017 Ried Loiserberg Grüner Veltliner is ripe and spicy on the white fruit-dominated nose. This is a picture-book Grüner Veltliner from the Kamptal#what lovely ripe pear aromas intertwined with herbal, even floral and stony aromas! Lush and round on the palate, this is a terribly juicy-piquant, pure, fresh and stimulating Veltliner with all the sexiness this grape can deliver. The wine has piquant and refreshing mineral acidly, fine grip and good length. Not utterly complex but perfect to have with or without food. Great purity and authenticity. Gruüner at its best! From 60+-year-old vines, Ott's 2018 Grüner Veltliner Ried Feuersbrunner Rosenberg 1ÖTW is deep, pure and fresh but also ripe and yeasty on the precisely mineral and iodine-scented nose. Round, lush and intense on the densely textured palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and powerful yet refreshing Veltliner with a hint of caramel on the finish but even more salts and tension. This has a terroir-driven soul but is also characterized by the warm vintage. The Rosenberg is not really massive but truly rich and powerful. The grapes were picked very early, but in contrast to other producers, there are no hints of unripeness or drying phenols. Tasted at Schloss Grafenegg in September 2019 and in my home office in December.

Proidl's 2016 Riede Ehrenfels 1ÖTW Senftenberger Grüner Veltliner is deep, intense and smoky on the nose, displaying a very aromatic bouquet of ripe peaches, nectarines and mangoes intermixed with herbal and crushed stone aromas. Full-bodied, rich and powerful on the palate, this is a generous but elegant and mineral Ehrenfels with fine tannins. The finish is long and aromatic, well structured, stimulating, fresh and salty, revealing mango flavors. This 2016 could become a gorgeous wine one day but the primary fruit aromas are still prominent and similar to Pellingen, whereas on the palate the Ehrenfels is deeper, more powerful in its structure and persistence. This exceptional terroir dominates the variety but not the fruit, which seems to be a concession to the Austrian taste which is pretty new for this formerly uncompromising domain. The 2016 Ried Steinertal Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is from the coolest Grüner Veltliner single vineyard of the Pichler family, with sandy gneiss and granite soils. The 2016 opens with a clear and fresh but also intense fruit aroma that is still a bit discreet on the nose. The attack on the palate is really fresh and piquant due to remarkable acidity. The wine is pure and mineral, shows a good phenolic grip and reveals white fruit aromas like yellow-skinned apples. The finish is clear, fresh and grippy and shows some attractive crispy fruit flavors. This is a lean, elegant, well balanced, medium to full-bodied Grüner Veltliner with less than 13% alcohol. From 66-year-old vines planted on the gneiss and quartzite soils in the steep Dürnstein cru, the 2017 Ried Höhereck Grüner Veltliner Smaragd displays an intense, fine and elegant nose with delicate citric and flinty-mineral notes. Very fine and elegant on the palate, with intense and well-concentrated fruit and lots of body, this is a rich and powerful but refined and well-balanced Smaragd with lingering piquant minerality. Bottled in June 2018. Tasted in Dürnstein/Wachau, September 2018.

The 2017 Spitz Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Rotes Tor is very delicate and elegant on the nose. Rich, lush and powerful on the palate, this is an intense, firmly structured and persistent yet elegant Veltliner with lots of tension and impressive length. Tasted in Spitz, September 2018.

Quite a powerful dry white, but with wonderful elegance. The balance of mirabelle and fresh-herb aromas and fresh acidity is spot on. Ripe and lively finish. Drink or hold.

From the warm and loessy middle part of the cru, the 2017 Ried Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner Smaragd offers a very delicate, fine bouquet of ripe, precise fruit aromas intertwined with flinty aromas. Intense and lush on the palate, this is a generous, very elegant, stimulating, salty-piquant, almost racy Smaragd with power, finesse, tension and vitality. The finish is long and grippy and reveals a still youthful wine that has very good aging potential. Tasted in Unterloiben, Wachau, September 2018.

Super ripe yet delicate with some yeasty aromas that will integrate with time. This is rich and powerful, but has plenty of freshness, the finish sleek and super-mineral. Great aging potential. Drink or hold.

The 2017 Ried Steinertal Riesling Smaragd is intense and flinty on the dark and stony, very flinty and coolish nose with its concentrated white peach and lime aromas. Full-bodied, sharp, super pure and mineral on the palate, this is a full-bodied, tight, fresh and serious wine with a long and tensioned but still terribly young finish. Great complexity and tension! One of the finest Rieslings from the Danube River in 2017. Tasted in Oberloiben/Wachau, September 2018.

Cool and herbal with a hint of wet ferns. In spite of the considerable concentration, it remains sleek and straight with a long, uncompromisingly mineral finish. Drink or hold.

Difficult to pick in time, the 2018 Ried Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner Smaragd offers a clear, fresh and flinty, elegant and balanced nose with riper fruit and delicately spicy aromas. Round, lush and intense on the palate, this full-bodied but elegant wine reveals a long and powerful finish that doesn't lose its freshness and elegance. The wine has good structure and phenolic grip but no phenolic or drying bitters. It combines elegance and freshness with power and extraordinarily ripe but still precise fruit. Pichler holds nine parcels in this large vineyard, of which the most are in the central part and in lower areas. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.

From the latest harvest pass and the oldest vines, though no botrytis yet highly ripe and overripe grapes, the 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd M is very concentrated and intense but clear and elegant on the slightly flinty nose. Sourced in the Kellerberg, Loibenberg Liebenberg and the terraced western part of the Kollmütz, this is a lush and rich, very intense yet elegant Veltliner with lots of power but also remarkable finesse and lingering salinity on the finish. Drinking this wine young is ridiculous and a waste of its talents and potential greatness. Although I don't know where the wine going from here I suppose it will develop very well over the next 10 years. The 2018, unlike the other Smaragd vines, was destemmed, macerated for up to 24 hours and 50% fermented in large (25 hectoliter) oak vats, and the lees were stirred once per month. Bottled in August 2019 and tasted at the domain in September.
