The 2013 Sicilia Adènzia represents a blend of Nero d'Avola and Syrah - two grapes that share many points in common. They both offer generous fruit tones, especially when cultivated in warm climates like Sicily. They also both offer superior softness and textural richness. This wine is a classic example of the happy marriage between Sicily's greatest red grape and its distant French relative. Dark fruit, cherry, spice and vanilla come together in seamless fashion.

Last year I tasted an older vintage of their white, and this time I encountered the 2013 Aigua de Llum, an unusual blend of 80% Viognier (from the Mas d'en Porrera estate) that is a blend of 15% Garnacha Blanca and a 5% made up of Macabeo, Escanyavella and Moscatel. Right now the élevage dominates the nose and the aromas of exotic fruits and syrup are in the background. Even in a cooler vintage like 2013 this wine reaches 15.5% alcohol so it comes through as a warm, Mediterranean effort that is quite well-built and offers very ripe flavors and even developing some honeyed notes. This might not be as long lived as the fantastic 2006. This vintage produced 1,365 bottles.

The only white produced at Vall Llach, the 2014 Aigua de Llum, is mainly Viognier complemented with other local grapes, some 15% Garnacha Blanca and 5% made up of Picapoll, Macabeo, Moscatel and Escanyavella. This is not a shy white, as it packs 15.5% alcohol, with low-ish acidity and a round and lush mouthfeel. Half of the Viognier fermented in new 300-liter French oak barrels and the rest in stainless steel, like the other varieties, which were later transferred to new 225-liter barriques where the wines aged for some four months. This is often my favorite wine from the winery, as it's the more drinkable one. Only 986 bottles were filled in June 2015.

The 2009 Allende is more expressive on the nose at this stage, with pure blackberry, briary, mineral and citrus notes. The palate is very well-balanced with fine, supple tannins and wonderful cohesion. To be frank, the 2009 puts recent vintages in the shade in terms of its elegance and poise. Outstanding!

The 2009 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a beautiful, "international" rendition that shows the soft and supple side of Amarone with loads of ripe fruit sweetness. You don#t find the thorny notes of oxidation you sometimes get with Amarone. This expression opens with an inky, impenetrable appearance and shows lingering notes of exotic spice, smoked bacon, grilled herb and blackberry preserves. Drink 2015-2025.

Light orange. High-pitched aromas of dried cherry, pungent herbs and oyster shell, with a strong mineral overtone. Dry and precise on the palate, offering lively red fruit and bitter blood orange flavors and a subtle touch of smokiness. Finishes firm, minerally and very long, leaving energetic strawberry and orange pith notes behind.

There is a white produced with Viura grapes that is only produced in cold vintages, which is exactly what the name of the 2013 Añadas Frías means. The grapes are sourced from a 1.5 hectare plot at 600 meters altitude of clay and limestone soils. It fermented in new 500-liter French oak barrels. The analytical data show figures more common in Chablis than in Rioja; the wine has a pH below three and there's no natural way the wine goes through malolactic. The nose showed intense iodine aromas and diesel-like notes, highly mineral, with a notable absence of fruit and oak. The palate is also soil-driven, with very chalky tannins and effervescent, citrusy acidity. It has a tremendously tasty finish, almost salty. This is one of those whites that feels like it was produced with stones rather than grapes. This should age in bottle forever. 1,476 bottles produced and filled in March 2015. This wine has only been released in 2007, 2010 and 2013, really

Dark ruby in color, this is super ripe and aromatic flavored red with purity and elegance on the nose. Dark cherries and plums on the nose. Silky textured, fresh and juicy, this is a lovely aromatic and well-structured#though not very concentrated#Bordeaux blend. It has purity, finesse and elegance. Nice bitter flavors in the finish, firm yet fine and with ripe tannins. It is moderate in alcohol at 12.5%. This wine is delicious today but should still be excellent after eight or more years.

The 2010 Aurus is what De Gregorio considers the golden formula (aurus is gold in Latin) for blending 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano from a number of head-pruned vineyards in Briones averaging 60 years of age, which fermented in French oak vats, carried out its malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels, and completed its upbringing over two years with rackings every four months before being bottled unfiltered and unfined. The difference here is that these are north-facing vineyards, with clay and gravel soils that produced austere wines. This is a much more serious wine, closed in the nose, elegant, su btle, with balsamic notes, mint, more mineral than fruity (produced with stones instead of fruits, I joked, but in a way it was true!). The palate reveals a tight, compact wine, with fine-grained tannins, straight and vertical, with great acidity and a mineral finish. 2010 is a superb Aurus! Drink 2016-2030.

It has a supremely refined, feminine bouquet that unfurls nicely in the glass: creme de cassis, blueberry, crushed stone and a faint tang of marmalade. This seamless wine opens to dark color and concentration with leathery aromas that are fused with plum, blackberry and cassis. It is a weighty and opulent wine that never feels too heavy or flat. In fact, the mouthfeel is bright and tonic with medium richness overall. The wine achieves a rare level of balance that is not easy for the Barbera grape.

Here is a very popular expression from Cascina Adelaide. The 2013 Barolo 4 Vigne opens to a lean and streamlined appearance with garnet and dark copper highlights. There are sweet fragrances of wild flower, rose hip and dried lavender that emerge first from the bouquet and define the wine's graceful and delicate personality. The mouthfeel is streamlined and fine, and those tannins are tucked in at the back. Although it shows a good amount of natural structure, it leaves a very polished and silky impression nonetheless. If you are looking for an approachable and easy-drinking Barolo, this is a great choice. This Barolo is pretty much ready to drink now.

Formerly known as Barolo Cannubi Boschis (the last vintage by that name was 2012), the 2013 Barolo Aleste has been renamed to honor the youngest generation of the Sandrone family, Alessia and Stefano. The wine name Aleste takes the first three letters from each grandchild's name. The move represents the culmination of more than 50 harvests completed by this legendary winemaker and his desire to pass on the torch. His grandchildren are at different points in their respective viticulture and enology university studies. Now under a different name, the wine obviously shows the same delicate floral nuances that you get with this wine (fruit from Cannubi is always harvested first). This is a complete and exciting wine with delicate notes of wild berry and smoke backed by licorice and blue flower.

The 2013 Barolo Aleste is a wine of striking purity and nuance. It is also one of the most finessed, vivid young Barolos I have ever tasted from Sandrone. The translucence of Nebbiolo comes through loud and clear. Freshly cut flowers, mint and finely cut fruit are some of the signatures. This wine has developed beautifully in recent vintages as the oak influence is less than it was just a few years ago. Beams of tannin and bright, salivating acidity add finesse to this translucent, exceptional Barolo. Aleste is the new name Sandrone is using for the Barolo formerly known as Cannubi Boschis.

Luciano Sandrone's 2011 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is shaping up to be one of the protagonists of the vintage. I say "shaping up" because the wine is still in a youthful stage and has yet to open up fully. Tight and firm, it shows the potential for enormous depth and dimension with dark fruit, spice, licorice and white truffle. If you taste through Sandrone's older vintages, it is apparent that they perform exceptionally well in warm years like 2011. It promises a rewarding evolution ahead but I would suggest waiting five more years before popping the cork.

The 2012 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is a solid and tighter wine compared to the 2012 Le Vigne. Having said that, it veers close to being too austere and hard-bodied, especially at this young stage of its life. Of Sandrone's two new Barolo releases, this wine definitely needs more time to evolve and soften with extra years of bottle aging. The tannins are more evident and the wine's firm backbone acts to support dark fruit flavors with distant accents of spice, licorice and tobacco. The 2012 Luciano Sandrone wines are very good, but remain far from the amazing heights achieved by this historic winery in the best years. Like many of the wines from this vintage (across the various townships that make up the appellation), they are slightly less expressive and they speak at a lower volume.

The 2012 Barolo Cannubi Boschis opens with beguiling aromatics redolent of crushed rose petal, spices, mint and new leather. Wonderfully layered and nuanced, especially for the year, the 2012 offers good freshness to match its inviting, supple fruit. I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later, while its alluring, open-knit personality is on full display. In 2012, the fruit tends towards the redder end of spectrum, unusual for Cannubi Boschis, which usually tends towards darker shades of expression. The 2012 is perfumed, lithe and super-classy from start to finish.

    Falstaff 97/100

    97/100 Punkte Falstaff Dezember 2016

    Parker 94/100

94/100 Punkte Robert Parker, May 2016
The 2012 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is a solid and tighter wine compared to the 2012 Le Vigne.

97/100 Punkte Robert Parker, Feb 2011
The 2007 Barolo Cannubi Boschis dazzles from start to finish. It shows marvelous delineation and freshness in its voluptuous, harmonious fruit, with no hard edges and an expansive, textured personality that conquers both the palate and intellect. Here, too, the oak is very well integrated, while the wine's balance and overall sense of harmony are nothing short of stunning. This is one of the very finest vintages of Cannubi Boschis. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032.

The 2013 Barolo Cannubi is a delicately perfumed wine that shows fine aromas of pressed rose, wild berry, tar, licorice and bright cherry cola. The wine is vibrant and pristine in terms of its intensity, yet it delivers that intensity with measured precision. I remember a time not too long ago when Cascina Adelaide adopted a very different approach to winemaking with more evident oak influences. Fast forward to today, and the estate's wines are fine and finessed instead. They show a very positive stylistic evolution. Give it a few more years of cellar aging.

Aromas of dried fruit, mushrooms and bark. Ripe-fruit undertones. Full body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Needs time to soften. Powerful Cannubi. Better in 2020.

    95/100 Punkte Falstaff

The 2009 Barolo Le Vigne shows class and pedigree with bright fruit tones carefully wrapped within the wine#s elegant texture. The purity and the intensity of the wine are exceptional, especially when compared to other Barolos from this vintage. The bouquet is polished and long, with pristine accents of spice, licorice and anise seed. Made with fruit sourced from various parcels, this wine speaks with a strong and confident tone. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.

The 2011 Barolo Le Vigne is an opulent and shapely wine with a point of extra cherry softness that you don't get in the 2011 Barolo Cannubi Boschis. That wine shows more austerity and vigor compared to this expression. But Le Vigne delivers an unexpected touch of roundness and opulence that fits the historic profile of this beautiful rendition of Nebbiolo. It presents a slightly more immediate style but it also has the inner grace and poise for a long cellar evolution.

    vinous 96/100

    96/100 Punkte Vinous, Nov 2014
Sandrone's 2011 Barolo Le Vigne is sweet, silky and exceptionally polished in the glass. Sweet floral notes, bright red berries, subtle spices and mint are all laced together nicely in the glass. Le Vigne is a blend of fruit from multiple vineyard sources. This is the first year in which Villero is part of the blend.

A wonderfully tight and polished young red with dark berry, plum and citrus character. Roses too. Full body, firm tannins and a bright finish. Better in 2017.
