The 2015 Oberflachs Auf der Mauer has a deep, pure, fine, licorice and dark cherry bouquet with oaky/toasty aromas. On the palate this is a charming, rich, pretty juicy and intense but rather broad and saturating Pinot Noir from a very steep, terraced, warm and dry vineyard. This is pretty rich and powerful but a less exciting Pinot Noir compared to the Rüeget.

Due to spring frost, there is 50% less quantity compared to a normal year of Tom Litwan's 2016 Oberflachs Auf der Mauer, a beautifully expressive Pinot Noir with a pure, very fine yet intense cherry bouquet with great freshness and spicy flavors. Silky, coolish and very elegant on the palate, this is a straight, tight, vibrantly fresh and spicy but very delicate red with a dense and tensioned finish and remarkable length. Very good concentration and structure here. Tasted in Zurich, November 2018.

Peter Wegelin's single-vineyard 2016 Malanser Blauburgunder Scadena is from very calcareous slate soils from a clos that is located below the Bothmar castle. The wine was aged for 12 months in 80% new barriques and another 12 months in used tonneaux. The bouquet is deep, intensely ripe and fruity as well as toasty but very elegant. The palate is full-bodied, dense and tightly structured, with fine but grippy tannins and good acidity. This clear-cut 2016 needs lots of aeration (or time), but its vitality and tension is promising. Release date: autumn this year. Tasted January 2019.

Stäger's 2015 Pinot Noir Barrique from Maienfeld has a dark ruby color and offers a pure, deep, fresh, spicy/flinty and elegant bouquet of ripe dark fruits. Full-bodied, vital and fresh on the palate, with a tiny bit of CO2 and a tight, vital structure as well as lingering minerals and fine tannins, this is a stunningly good wine with a long, complex finish. Still terribly young but vibrant and tight, this 2015 has great aging potential of at least 15 years. Ex-cellar price: 30 CHF. Tasted in Zurich, August 2017.

The 2014 Malanser Blauburgunder Reserva has a dark purple color and opens with a very toasty but also floral, slatey bouquet of perfectly ripe cherry and dark berry aromas. Full-bodied, ripe and sweet on the silky palate, this is an intense and stunningly powerful Pinot Noir for that difficult vintage. Its fruit is quite developed, but the wine is still very firm and provided with lots of mealy tannins that are still a bit dry on the finish. This is an excellent long-distance runner that should be cellared for another 7-8 years.

A bright and transparent garnet-ruby color dresses the 2014 Thalheim Chalofe Pinot Noir, which is selected from 20- to 45-year-old vines on marl soils. Aged in barriques for 12 months and another six months in stainless steel, the wine opens with a very clear, pure, fresh and reductive bouquet that reminds me of a white Burgundy-though the fruit flavors have a rather red-skinned origin. Silky textured, very pure and fresh, this is a very delicate and finessed Pinot with a silky texture and a filigreed structure. The finish, however, shows tension, firm yet highly fine tannins, as well as the salty purity and refreshing elegance of a Chablis or even Riesling. An amazing wine!

Firm, intense and piquant on the palate, this is an intense and powerful but elegant and racy Chardonnay from the Selvenen. It did not undergo malolactic fermentation and comes along pretty racy and piquant but not as quiet as the Gantenbein Chardonnay. Fresh. Tasted November 2018.

Fermented in stainless steel and oak vats, but aged in new and used barriques until the bottling in May, this is a full-bodied, round and very aromatic Pinot Blanc; it has a smooth acidity and an elegant texture. The 2015 is still made-up and lacks the purity and finessed freshness of a great wine, but the round and smooth-textured mouthfeel will be really pleasant for many consumers. Silky, lush and elegant on the palate, with very fine tannins and delicate acidity, this is a full-bodied, intense and generous Pinot with firm tannins and concentrated dark fruit on the finish. This is still young and a bit austere, but the Auvernier most probably has greater aging potential and certainly more generosity than the Hauterive. It is a deep, dense and powerful Pinot without any hints of sweetness, charm or nougat. It's simply Pinot Noir at its best, and it's damned tight and salty as well as concentrated on the finish. A great Swiss Pinot indeed, though I will probably always prefer the mineral grip and tension of the Hauterive to the generosity of the Auvernier, which is the more famous wine of the two. The dark colored 2015 Jenins Pinot Noir Sélection Barrique is a bit shut down right now, but it indicates deep, ripe, refined and elegant fruit on the nose that keeps the flinty terroir aromas alive and doesn't dominate the bouquet. Rich and with a velvety texture, the 2015 reflects the warm year as well as the terroir that keeps the freshness and mineral vitality even in dry and sunny vintages like this. The finish is powerful and intense, very long but pure, fresh and salty as well. I'd keep the wine for another 2 or 3 years, but I suppose you can serve it for a decade. The finish shows such good concentration, tight structure and mineral tension. The tannins, by the way, are legion, but they are fine and polymerizing with body and texture. A great Swiss Pinot indeed, which I terribly underrated on a very hot August day in 2017, but I am happily generous (but fair) with the 2015 today. Tasted in January 2019.

The 2016 Jenins Pinot Noir Sélection Barrique (for details see the review of the 2017) offers an intense, warm and concentrated nose of ripe cherries, stewed strawberries and nougat and indicates a remarkable richness, elegance and harmony. The attack on the palate is generous and intense, but the wine remains elegant and fine, with vital tannins and a persistent mineral acidity and complexity. The long finish is compact, salty and powerful. This is a promising Pinot that was picked with tiny yields of just 400 grams per vine. It's more intense and fleshier than the refreshing and transparent 2017 but sweeter and more charming than the great 2015. In any case, the 2016 needs more time to show off. Bottled in March 2018; tasted in January 2019.
