The 2008 Chianti Classico flows from the glass with dark cherries, sweet French oak, new leather and earthiness. This is a rich, bold style of Chianti Classico with tons of fruit especially for the vintage supported by French oak, but everything comes together beautifully in the glass. Readers should not expect much in the way of Sangiovese character (the addition of Merlot seems on the generous side), but it is impossible to find fault with the wine's overall balance and poise.

The 2008 Ilatraia is a touch rustic in this vintage. Dark fruit, black olives, sage and rosemary are some of the nuances that flow from the glass. Today the wine is rather disjointed and stern, with little of the sunny radiance that distinguishes the finest years. That said, the wine does come together with air, which is enough reason to be cautiously optimistic about the future. Ilatraia is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese and 10% Petit Verdot from vineyards in Maremma that spent 18 months in French oak.

There's plenty of ripe, juicy fruit in this young wine, which is full and velvety, with a long finish. Best after 2011. 3,750 cases made.

Tasting the 2005 Ilatraia next to Il Blu provides a fascinating contrast between the wines of Maremma, in the case of the former, and Chianti Classico in the case of the latter. The Ilatria shows the greater volume and depth that makes the wines from Maremma so appealing. This French oak-aged blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese and 10% Petit Verdot is sweet and generous on the palate, where dark fruit, leather, spices, espresso and toasted oak come together in a very harmonious wine with well-integrated tannins and lovely balance. This doesn't look to be a wine destined for a long life, so it is best enjoyed over the next few years.

Aromas of blackberry and mineral, with hints of fresh herbs. Full-bodied, with soft tannins and a long, caressing finish. Balanced and pretty. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot. Best after 2009. 2,750 cases made.
