The 2004 Tinto Gloria Reynolds -Cathedral is an equal blend of Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet, aged in new French oak for 24 months. This is simply the old Gloria Reynolds Tinto with a new name, Cathedral only indicating a re-release program. Julian Cuellar Reynolds said: Gloria Cathedral 2004 is an old harvest, the lot of every Gloria that I keep in the cellar for a second release after 12 years. I was not sold on this originally, but it is very impressive now that it is mature-and that maturity is the key to success here. The tannins have moderated, the oak has been pulled in and, most importantly, there is a glorious medley of complex flavors typical of many maturing wines, some earth, forest floor, dried cassis and so on. The texture is gorgeous, too, silky and sensual. If the fruit seems fully mature, the structure still gives it energy. The tannins are controlled, but there is still grip and tension on the finish. The 2009 Gloria Reynolds Art & Tradition Tinto is an equal blend of Alicante Bouschet and Trincadeira, aged for 24 months in new French oak. It comes in at 14% alcohol. Far more burly and muscular than the 2011 Grande Reserva this issue#even with two extra years of bottle age-this is the one where the winery goes for a statement and let's it all hang out. Yet, with the late release, this has come to a place where it is at least drinkable now, if still a bit tight. Long on the finish, with the beefy nuances of the Alicante dominating the wine, this also has surprising freshness, some acidity that lifts the fruit. In this big and very warm year, this seems impressive for its success in maintaining its balance. At the same time, it adds a layer of depth and power to the Grande Reserva. This seems positioned to age very well#the producer thinks well over 30 years-but let's start here and see where it goes in time.

The 2011 Julian Reynolds Grande Reserva is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouschet, plus 20% Syrah, rather different than last year's. It was aged for 18 months in 70% new French oak and comes in at 14.5% alcohol. At this point in the wine's life - this late release is a current release#this seems refined and velvety with a medley of flavors ranging from beef to lead on the finish. Its balance and its graceful demeanor are probably the best features, especially as it delivers nuanced flavors all the while. It is persistent and long on that flavorful finish. It always seems pure and fresh. This should be a pleasure to drink. There were 13,000 bottles produced.

The 2017 Pombal do Vesúvio (Quinta do Vesúvio) is mostly a 54/40 blend of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional with 6% Tinta Amarela, aged for eight months in used French oak. It comes in at 14.4% alcohol, an uptick from last year's vintage. Wow. The fruit here seems to be the essence of young fruit, primary, sexy and just delicious. Of the Symington selections this issue (including the sister producer Prats & Symington), this is the best value, the biggest overachiever. One of the best in the brand so far#maybe the best yet#this starts off with that great fruit laced with plums and dried blueberries, but it does not neglect the concepts of balance, finesse and structure. Beautifully constructed, this has moderate tannins to support the fruit and a big, long finish. It feels fresh rather than jammy, despite both its power and sex appeal. The only question now is where this goes#can it develop some complexity, some additional distinction in the c

The 2015 Prazo de Roriz is a roughly equal blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barroca, with small bits of Tinta Roriz and Tinta Amarela, aged for six months in used French oak. This is typically a good value. This might be my favorite in some time. There isn't a lot of concentration in the mid-palate and it isn't the type of wine you want to age for 20 years. It's not $50, either. It's a very nice bargain with many virtues. The fruit here is just gorgeous, vivid, pure and clean. The structure lifts it and delivers it beautifully to the palate. The texture is silky and the finish is just a bit tight. Overall, it is hard to lean up more on this since it doesn't have a lot of upside potential, but if you drink it over the next few years, you might like it even better than the score would suggest.

The 2016 Tinto (Quinta do Vesúvio), the Estate red, is a blend of 56% Touriga Nacional, 40% Touriga Franca and a dollop of Tinta Amarela aged for 18 months in French oak (80% new). It comes in at 14% alcohol. If you're comparing the high end from Symington-related labels this issue, this is very different from the Chryseia (under Prats & Symington). Here, you get a more muscular and concentrated wine. Here, there is more of an edge and a need for cellaring. Packed with plums and black cherries, it also has a darker and much richer flavor profile#there's a relatively warm feel here#than Chryseia, less elegance but more intensity in terms of both structure and fruit. To me, this sumptuous red is the better wine with a higher upside potential, although it certainly has some things to prove in the cellar. Some six hours later, it was still a little aggressive but just packed with fruit and flavor. This needs a few years to come around. Let's s

The 2008 Licoroso Robert Reynolds is a fortified Alicante Bouschet with 19% alcohol and 114.5 grams per liter of residual sugar. It was aged for 24 months in French oak vats, bottled with a long cork and then held back for three years in bottle. Let's just say up front: this is a "wow" wine. Big, concentrated and powerful, this is impressive from the get-go. That said, it isn't a mindless fruit bomb and it isn't really all that sweet, either. In fact, structure typically dominates at the outset. Like a fine, dry-ish Port, it soaks up a lot of the sugar and actually finishes, relatively speaking, rather dry. As it aired out, it came into better balance between fruit and structure, but that tightly wound intensity always remained, even as the days went by. The aromatics lean to earthy and beefy and then it finishes with some Alicante complexity and lingers. This is very fine--and far better balanced if drunk in the low or even mid-60s than room t

Gorgeous, with warm plum reduction and gently steeped raspberry, blackberry and boysenberry fruit flavors forming the core, all inlaid with warm ganache and smoldering tobacco accents. Very plush in feel, but has no lack of energy, as everything sails beautifully through the long finish. A late echo of anise completes the seduction. Best from 2035 through 2055.

Very complex with dried flowers and roses. Full-bodied, very layered and tightly wound. Chewy and powerful. Firm and off-dry. Needs five or six years to soften. Beauty. Try in 2024.
