The 2015 Oberflachs Auf der Mauer has a deep, pure, fine, licorice and dark cherry bouquet with oaky/toasty aromas. On the palate this is a charming, rich, pretty juicy and intense but rather broad and saturating Pinot Noir from a very steep, terraced, warm and dry vineyard. This is pretty rich and powerful but a less exciting Pinot Noir compared to the Rüeget.

The 2015 Thalheim Chalofe has a deep, pure, fresh and coolish bouquet of ripe cherry. On the palate this is a full-bodied, rich and persistent but also pure Pinot Noir with power, intensity and endless juiciness. It is well balanced and provided with remarkable finesse, salinity and tension. This is a gorgeous Pinot Noir from the Aargau. Tasted in Zurich, August 2017.

Christian Hermann's 2018 Fläscher Chardonnay is precise and intense on the aromatic, slightly flinty and mineral-tinged nose. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and (extracted) sweetish but also grippy and salty-mineral Chardonnay with good tension. This is well-made and powerful but still has a lot of fruit aromas and juice. Keep it for a year or two. 13.5% alcohol. Tasted in Zurich in December 2019.

A new special cuvée introduced in 2014, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée A Tempo Blanc is an even split of Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, all from the Mont Pertuis lieu-dit, that was aged in a mix of very old barrels and stainless steel. There#s a scant 100 cases produced and it has terrific, saliva-inducing minerality as well as ample citrus blossom, white peach, mint and a sea breeze-like saltiness. Tight, focused, medium to full-bodied and with impressive density, it needs 6-12 months of bottle age, and I suspect will keep for over a decade.

Brilliant straw. A powerful, expansive bouquet evokes mineral-accented Meyer lemon, pear, iodine and jasmine. Sappy citrus and orchard fruit flavors stain the palate and display a suave blend of richness and vivacity, with no undue weight. Juicy, taut and strikingly concentrated, displaying the tension of a Grand Cru Chablis. Finishes minerally, floral and extremely long, conveying a repeating floral quality. This should turn out to be a stunning wine, by any measure, and as white Châteauneuf goes, it'll be monumental.

The golden-yellow colored NV Grand Cru Le Mesnil sur Oger Diapason displays a deep, intense yet fresh, fine and complex bouquet of great elegance and terroir expression with chalk and citrus notes. Vinified 45% in small oak barrels, this is an intense, fresh and elegant grand cru, and the finish is intense and perfectly ripe but still precise, refined and delicately salty. This is a truly smart assemblage of two contrasting vintages (2008 and 2009) that takes the best of both to compose something new and complete. It's an excellent cuvée indeed. Bottled in April 2010 and disgorged as Extra Brut on December 12th, 2017. Tasted April 2018.

The 2017 Bianco del Ticino Granito blends Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris and Blanc and opens with a clear, intensely floral and refreshing bouquet of ripe fruit aromas intertwined with notes of crushed stones and some oak. Precise and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense, tight and seriously structured white with ripe fruit, tension-giving minerals and fine bitters on the finish. The oak influence is palatable but moderate, and the wine has good, refreshing length with some fine tannins and stimulating salinity. This is an excellent white to have with a big, fat fish or good risotto. It is still very young though. Tasted in October 2019.

The 2011 Julian Reynolds Grande Reserva is an equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouschet, plus 20% Syrah, rather different than last year's. It was aged for 18 months in 70% new French oak and comes in at 14.5% alcohol. At this point in the wine's life - this late release is a current release#this seems refined and velvety with a medley of flavors ranging from beef to lead on the finish. Its balance and its graceful demeanor are probably the best features, especially as it delivers nuanced flavors all the while. It is persistent and long on that flavorful finish. It always seems pure and fresh. This should be a pleasure to drink. There were 13,000 bottles produced.

From chalk and silex soils, the golden-yellow colored 2006 Le Mont Aimé Premier Cru Coeur de Terroir has a very particular bouquet for the Côte des Blancs and needs a while to get rid of its rather reductive style (36% was fermented in small oak barrels). Concentrated citrus flavors evolve after a while in the glass. This could also be a ripe and flinty Chablis with bubbles. On the palate, this is a beautifully elegant, refined and rather crystalline Champagne, and its linear elegance is pretty unique. The finish is pure, salty and rather piquant but ripe. This is a fascinating wine that I perhaps slightly underrated in my review from two years ago (in Issue #225). This sample was disgorged in July 2017, about 2.5 years after the one I tasted in early 2016 for my previous review. The dosage is 3.5 grams per liter. The wine was bottled in April 2007, but the long lees aging adds a lot of elegance, finesse and charm. The finish is incredibl

The 2018 Malans Chardonnay shows an intense golden-yellow color and opens with a correspondingly intense but pure and elegant bouquet that indicates super ripe fruit. On the palate, this is a fresh and pure but powerful and full-bodied wine with fine tannins and toasty flavors from the barriques. This 2018 is remarkably fresh and elegant, given that warm vintage. The finish is stimulatingly pure and fresh and also salty. An excellent effort. 13.5% alcohol. Tasted in Zurich in December 2019.

Christian Zündel's recent edition of his most famous red, the 2016 Merlot Orizzonte is dark in flavors#spicy, deep and concentrated, with some chocolate notes. This 2016 is perhaps closest to wines such as Masseto and other Merlot icon wines. This one, however, is still floral and alpine, with delicate acidity and finesse as well as fine tannins, a persistent finish and good concentration. This is more juicy, less stony, and it is very long and with good tension. Tasted at Brancaia in Zurich in October 2019.
