The 2015 Oberflachs Auf der Mauer has a deep, pure, fine, licorice and dark cherry bouquet with oaky/toasty aromas. On the palate this is a charming, rich, pretty juicy and intense but rather broad and saturating Pinot Noir from a very steep, terraced, warm and dry vineyard. This is pretty rich and powerful but a less exciting Pinot Noir compared to the Rüeget.

    Falstaff 93/100

    93/100 Punkte Falstaff, Februar 2017

A bright and transparent garnet-ruby color dresses the 2014 Thalheim Chalofe Pinot Noir, which is selected from 20- to 45-year-old vines on marl soils. Aged in barriques for 12 months and another six months in stainless steel, the wine opens with a very clear, pure, fresh and reductive bouquet that reminds me of a white Burgundy-though the fruit flavors have a rather red-skinned origin. Silky textured, very pure and fresh, this is a very delicate and finessed Pinot with a silky texture and a filigreed structure. The finish, however, shows tension, firm yet highly fine tannins, as well as the salty purity and refreshing elegance of a Chablis or even Riesling. An amazing wine!

A new special cuvée introduced in 2014, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée A Tempo Blanc is an even split of Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, all from the Mont Pertuis lieu-dit, that was aged in a mix of very old barrels and stainless steel. There#s a scant 100 cases produced and it has terrific, saliva-inducing minerality as well as ample citrus blossom, white peach, mint and a sea breeze-like saltiness. Tight, focused, medium to full-bodied and with impressive density, it needs 6-12 months of bottle age, and I suspect will keep for over a decade.

Brilliant straw. A powerful, expansive bouquet evokes mineral-accented Meyer lemon, pear, iodine and jasmine. Sappy citrus and orchard fruit flavors stain the palate and display a suave blend of richness and vivacity, with no undue weight. Juicy, taut and strikingly concentrated, displaying the tension of a Grand Cru Chablis. Finishes minerally, floral and extremely long, conveying a repeating floral quality. This should turn out to be a stunning wine, by any measure, and as white Châteauneuf goes, it'll be monumental.

From gneiss soils covered with white and red sand and finally loess, the 2015 Engabrunner Stein 1ÖTW Grüner Veltliner is a very clear, deep and flinty flavored wine with superripe white-fruit aromas on the nose. Rich and elegant on the palate. this is a generously fruity but precise and tension-filled Veltliner with a lush texture and a precisely mineral piquancy in the pure and salty finish. An impressive Veltliner full of grip and aging potential. Due to hail damage yields were very, very low in 2015 and only 4'000 liters of the 2015 Stein have been bottled from 5.25 hectares of vines. It was the deadline day of this issue (June 3) when I got the chance to taste the 2015s of Mister Veltliner Bernhard Ott, one of the leading wine estates in the Wagram region, if not the whole Danube valley. These wines, especially the grands crus or Erste Lage wines from Grüner Veltliner (indicated on the label as 1ÖTW), are the greatest wines Ott has bott

Kräftiges Rot; im Bukett verhalten, leicht reduktiv, Veilchen, Sauerkirschen, dezent Peperoni, Weihrauch; im Geschmack jugendlich frisches Tannin, präsente Säure. Noch unzugänglicher, vielversprechender Merlot, muss reifen.

Verschlossenes, aromatisches, tiefgründiges Bouquet, Erdbeeren, Heidelbeeren, verschiedene Kräuter, zart Eukalyptus, fein Mocca. Dichter, verschlossener, fein kerniger Gaumen dichte Frucht, viel feines Tannin, fein muskulöse Struktur, vielfältige Aromatik, langer, dichter Abgang mit feinen Rückaromen, kann noch zulegen.

    Falstaff 91/100

    91/100 Punkte Falstaff, Februar 2017

From 30-year-old vines on chalky marl soils, the 2014 Oberflachs Auf der Mauer Pinot Noir has a very clear, pure and fine bouquet of red fruits along with slightly flinty terroir flavors. From Tom Litwan's Pinot trio, this is the most accessible wine: round, sweet and elegant, well balanced and finessed, with an intense and concentrated red fruit flavor in the long and persistent finish. This wine has more texture and charm than the Thalheim, and is more feminine compared to the Elfingen.

The dark colored 2015 Jenins Pinot Noir Sélection Barrique is a bit shut down right now, but it indicates deep, ripe, refined and elegant fruit on the nose that keeps the flinty terroir aromas alive and doesn't dominate the bouquet. Rich and with a velvety texture, the 2015 reflects the warm year as well as the terroir that keeps the freshness and mineral vitality even in dry and sunny vintages like this. The finish is powerful and intense, very long but pure, fresh and salty as well. I'd keep the wine for another 2 or 3 years, but I suppose you can serve it for a decade. The finish shows such good concentration, tight structure and mineral tension. The tannins, by the way, are legion, but they are fine and polymerizing with body and texture. A great Swiss Pinot indeed, which I terribly underrated on a very hot August day in 2017, but I am happily generous (but fair) with the 2015 today. Tasted in January 2019.

The 2014 Jenins Pinot Noir Sélection Barrique is sourced from different calcareous vineyards at 600 meters altitude planted with Pinot clones. Aged for 12 months in used and new barriques, this garnet/ruby-colored wine offers a deep and intense bouquet of ripe berries and cherries with toasty flavors. Silky textured and elegant on the palate this is a very charming, medium to full-bodied, intense and fruity Pinot that develops a medium concentration and length. The tannins are firm and a bit rough.
