The 2014 Val d'Arno di Sopra BògginAnfora sees fruit sourced from a 4.5-hectare single vineyard of Sangiovese grapes. This plot also makes fruit for the blended red Torrione, but the central part of the vineyard goes through a careful selection process to make this wine. The fruit is organic. The wine is fermented in amphorae, some purchased in Spain and others using Tuscan clay from potters in Impruneta. This vintage saw a slightly shorter maceration time (compared to the 2013 vintage) only because the grape skins were more delicate in this difficult vintage. The results are very lively and tonic with bright ruby Sangiovese tones of cherry, moist earth and forest floor. I'd suggest a slightly shorter drinking window for this vintage.

It's interesting to taste the 2014 Bòggina Anfora (Bògginanfora), Petrolo's Sangiovese done in amphora next to the same wine aged in oak. The amphora wine is initially a bit softer and creamier in its contours, but it also offers less development in the glass. Lavender, plum, menthol, sage and sweet herbs lead into the expressive finish. This is another very pretty wine from Petrolo and proprietor Luca Sanjust.

This wine sees fruit sourced from the warm and sunny Maremma area on coastal Tuscany. The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon shows an inky dark appearance with dark garnet color saturation. It offers a fine and chiseled aromatic profile with dark berry fruit followed by spice, anise seeds and an unmistakable balsamic note that reminds me of eucalyptus oil. This is a mid-weight expression of the grape that is both accessible and easy to drink straight out of the gate. It ages in neutral oak for 12 months. Some 20,000 bottles were made.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, from Brancaia's vineyards in Maremma, expresses a good bit of varietal character and overall nuance. Fleshy, dark and seductive, the 2016 will drink well with minimal cellaring. Today, it is very pretty and delicious.

The 2013 Il Blu is truly an exceptional wine. This blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon pours from the bottle with midnight black intensity. The wine is luscious and loud in terms of its aromatic intensity but the effect is beautifully balanced all the while. The wine is streamlined and tight in the mouth but don't underestimate its length and persistence. The finish can be counted in many long heartbeats. Some 32,000 bottles were produced.

    James Suckling 96/100

96/100 James Suckling August 2017 A firm red with plenty of tannins that are polished and silky textured. Medium body, fresh and taut. Chocolate and cedar combines nicely with the ripe fruit. Impressive blend of merlot, sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon. One of best ever from here. Drinkable but better in 2021.

This is the wine that put Brancaia on the map of Tuscany's most celebrated estates. A blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Sangiovese and a smaller percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (fermented with indigenous yeasts in conical steel vats and aged in new and neutral barrique for 20 months), the 2015 Il Blu is a wine that enthusiastically embraces the energy, heat and sunshine of the vintage. The fruit is dark and slightly sweet with aromas of black cherries and dried blackberries. Those flavors deliver rich, soft intensity. The wine is not quite full-bodied, because the mouthfeel is elegant and finessed, but it does deliver lasting power, freshness and polished tannins.

Mürb-körniges, leicht mehliges Tannin, das aber von Saft dominiert wird, dezente, aber ziselierte Säure, die Eleganz und Richtung gibt. Expressive, deep Cabernet Franc aromatics make a strong opening statement, with a host of black pepper, spice, lavender, espresso and mocha notes front and center. The 2013 Cavalli is a terrific expression from a crisp and cooler vintage. The wine is composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Petit Verdot and 15% Cabernet Franc, aged in oak for 18 months and in bottle for an additional 18 months. I should underline that the Petit Verdot percentage plays a much bigger role in this vintage and I'm told this will also be the case in the future. The bouquet here reveals dark tones of spice and black fruit, and the wine offers the thick color saturation and fruity concentration to match. The finish is layered, rich and opulent.

The 2014 Tenuta degli Dei is fabulous. In fact, the 2014 is one of the best recent vintages of this wine I can remember tasting. Aromatically expressive and inviting, the 2014 is terrific. Stylistically, it is perhaps not as overt as some recent editions, but that is not a bad thing given the natural richness that is typical of Panzano.
